A new comprehensive patent database based on patent applications filed with the Japanese Patent Office is described. We present the methodology for the construction of this database, the IIP Patent Database, its basic features and we discuss the recent history of patenting in Japan. We also compare citing-cited patterns of Japanese patents in this database with the citing-cited patterns for the same patents registered in the US, using OECD patent family information to identify US counterparts. We found similar patterns in the two countries, although citation is provided by patent examiners in Japan, while in the US a large share of citations is made by inventors.  相似文献

This paper studies the relationship between migration and the productivity of high-skilled workers, as captured by inventors of international patent applications. Using machine learning techniques to uniquely identify inventors across patents, we are able to track the migration patterns of nearly one million individual inventors across countries. Migrant inventors account for more than nine percent of inventors in our sample. The econometric analysis seeks to explain the recurring finding in the literature that migrant inventors are more productive than non-migrant inventors. We find evidence that migrant inventors become about twenty-three percent more productive after having migrated. The disambiguated inventor data are openly available.  相似文献

This paper addresses the question of whether patent citations are useful indicators of technology flows. We exploit the distinction between citations added by inventors and patent examiners. We use information from the search reports of European Patent Office patent examiners to construct our dataset of patenting activity in Europe and the US, and apply various econometric models to investigate what determines the probability that a citation is added by the inventor rather than the examiner. Contrary to previous work which uses US Patent and Trademark Office data, we find that geographical distance is a factor that strongly diminishes the probability of knowledge flows. We find other significant effects of such factors as cognitive distance, time and strategic factors on citing behaviour.  相似文献

Patent statistics represent a critical tool for scholars, statisticians and policy makers interested in innovation and intellectual property rights. Many analyses are based on heterogeneous methods delineating the inventors’ or firms’ patent portfolios without questioning the quality of the method employed. We assess different heuristics in order to provide a robust solution to automatically retrieve inventors in large patent datasets (PATSTAT). The solution we propose reduces the usual errors by 50% and casts doubts on the reliability of statistical indicators and micro-econometric results based on common matching procedures. Guidelines for researchers, TTOs, firms, venture capitalists and policy makers likely to implement a names game or to comment on results based on a names game are also provided.  相似文献

[研究目的]专利是企业或组织获取核心竞争力的重要工具。专利发明人作为专利价值的载体,对企业或组织发展的影响不可忽视。从知识组合新颖性与网络特征两个方面进行分析,为企业或组织识别、挖掘及引进核心人才提供参考。[研究方法]从Derwent Innovation数据库中选取LED专利,以专利诉讼视角将发明人专利是否涉讼作为核心发明人的代理变量,发明人的知识组合新颖性、度数中心性、接近中心性、中介中心性、特征向量中心性作为自变量,进行Logistic回归。[研究结论]研究发现知识组合新颖性、度数中心性、接近中心性、特征向量中心性与核心发明人有显著的正向影响。建议企业或组织在挖掘及引进技术人才时应多关注技术领域不同、合作次数较多以及拥有较多重要合作伙伴的发明人。  相似文献

 近年来,许多专利技术在我国以拍卖的方式得以交易。专利拍卖吸引了众多企业和个人的关注和兴趣,并日益成为专利技术市场的一种发展趋势。但是,目前我国研究专利拍卖及其成交率的文献还很少。以中国技术交易所2010年12月16日举办的第一届专利拍卖的89件专利为样本,通过双样本t检验比较拍卖成交专利和未成交专利的特征差异,并利用Logistic回归模型分析专利属性和拍卖方式等因素对专利拍卖成交率的影响。研究结果表明,专利拍卖的定价方式和专利属性中的发明人个数、专利类型、专利分类数对专利拍卖成交率有显著影响。  相似文献

Mapping technologies into industries is frequently required in empirical innovation studies, but many concordances only provide coarse mappings. We develop a novel concordance between industries and technologies making use of linked inventor-employee data for a large sample of German patents filed at the European Patent Office between 1999 and 2011. Inventors listed on these patents are matched and disambiguated with German social security records. Employment data recorded in this database include detailed industry codes describing the industrial activities of the inventors’ establishments. These linked microdata allow us to identify the precise industrial origin of inventions, combine them with technology classifications from the inventors’ patents and to generate novel concordance tables. We evaluate our approach by comparing the concordances with existing work. Moreover, in an empirical application, we find that patent based indicators represent valid proxies for the innovation performance of industries and thus help to measure innovation in the absence of other survey based indicators. Service sector innovation activities, however, appear to be barely represented by the patenting activities of inventors and establishments.  相似文献

突破性技术发明在企业参与全球技术和市场竞争中的作用已经得到广泛认可,但如何才能创造产生突破性技术发明仍是学术界和企业界关注的热点问题。本文基于知识搜索重组视角和团队学习理论,重点考察知识组合多样性、新颖性对突破性技术发明形成的直接影响程度和交互影响效应,并揭示发明人团队规模对知识组合特征与突破性技术发明形成关系的调节作用。基于美国专利商标局(USPTO)1989-2012年纳米技术领域的8334条授权发明专利进行实证检验,结果发现:(1)与知识组合多样性相比,知识组合新颖性对突破性技术发明形成的正向影响更为显著;同时,知识组合多样性与知识组合新颖性对突破性技术发明的形成具有显著的正向交互作用。(2)发明人团队规模对知识组合多样性与突破性技术发明形成的关系具有显著的正向调节作用,而对知识组合新颖性与突破性技术发明形成关系的负向调节作用不显著。本研究从知识元素和发明人视角系统揭示了突破性技术发明的形成机制,对企业面向突破性技术发明的发明人团队构建及知识组合战略实施具有重要启示。  相似文献

How team composition exactly influences innovation outcomes remains a complex and unsolved puzzle in the literature on creativity and innovation. Our study differentiates two types of team technology-related diversity—technological dissimilarity and technological variety, and investigates their influences on the impact of an invention created by a team. Analyses of over half million U.S. utility patents in the 1991–2005 period invented by teams reveal that technological variety of team inventors has a positive effect on invention impact, and that technological dissimilarity between team inventors plays both positive and negative roles, eliciting an inverted U-shaped effect. In addition, we find that the positive effect of dissimilarity is significantly reduced after controlling for variety. Theoretical and practical implications of our findings are discussed.  相似文献

Patent scope is one of the important aspects in the debates over “patent quality.” The purported decrease in patent quality over the last decade or two has supposedly led to granting patents of increased breadth, decreased clarity, and questionable validity (in part due to over-breadth). Such patents allegedly diminish the incentives for innovation due to increased transaction costs in the market for technology, more frequent disputes and litigation, trolling behavior, and breakdowns in bargaining. This paper focuses on the patent examination process at the PTO, highlighting the relationship between patent scope and the patent examination process. We develop and validate two measurements of patent scope: independent claim length and independent claim count. These metrics—in contrast to other measurements of patent scope—can be calculated before and after examination and enable us to provide the first large-scale analysis of trends in patent scope changes during the examination process. Our results show that applications with narrower scope are associated with a higher probability of grant and a shorter and less intense examination period in comparison to applications with broader scope. Further, we find that the examination process itself tends to narrow the scope of patents relative to the scope at filing, and that the changes are more significant when the duration and intensity of examination is increased. We explain our metrics and make our data available in a public use dataset, which we hope will encourage more research in the evaluation of patent scope, patent examination, and patent quality more broadly.  相似文献

We analyze the impact of accession to the regional patent system established by the European Patent Convention (EPC) on 14 countries that acceded between 2000 and 2008. We look at changes in patenting behavior by domestic and foreign applicants at the national patent offices and the European Patent Office (EPO). We find a strong change in patent filing behavior among foreigners seeking patent protection in the accession states, substituting EPO patents for domestic patents immediately. However, there is no discernible reaction among domestic entities in terms of domestic filings, although we do find some evidence that applicants in accession states increased their propensity to file patents with the EPO post-accession. Inventors in accession countries also increase their patent filings slightly post-accession, both at the EPO and at the national offices.  相似文献

专利组合对知识密集型企业强化知识产权保护、持续提高创新绩效具有重要现实意义,已成为企业实施专利管理的基本分析单元。目前专利组合对企业创新绩效作用机制的实证研究较为缺乏。基于沪深主板上市的99家计算机、通信和其他电子设备制造业企业2013-2017年的面板数据,运用知识观理论分析专利组合的技术范围和多样性与企业创新绩效的关系。研究表明:技术范围显著正向影响企业创新绩效;专利组合多样性与创新绩效呈倒U型关系;技术整合能力在专利组合与创新绩效之间起到中介作用;权利范围在技术整合能力与创新绩效之间起到调节作用。  相似文献

An automatic patent categorization system would be invaluable to individual inventors and patent attorneys, saving them time and effort by quickly identifying conflicts with existing patents. In recent years, it has become more and more common to classify all patent documents using the International Patent Classification (IPC), a complex hierarchical classification system comprised of eight sections, 128 classes, 648 subclasses, about 7200 main groups, and approximately 72,000 subgroups. So far, however, no patent categorization method has been developed that can classify patents down to the subgroup level (the bottom level of the IPC). Therefore, this paper presents a novel categorization method, the three phase categorization (TPC) algorithm, which classifies patents down to the subgroup level with reasonable accuracy. The experimental results for the TPC algorithm, using the WIPO-alpha collection, indicate that our classification method can achieve 36.07% accuracy at the subgroup level. This is approximately a 25,764-fold improvement over a random guess.  相似文献

在全球专利膨胀的大背景下,有效的早期专利评价指标是把握技术发展态势服务战略和技术管理的有力工具。本文以中国专利局1986-2005年间授权的机械工具领域发明专利为研究对象,以专利文献中早期可获得的经济或技术信息为基础构建出专利质量早期表征指标,选择专利维持时间作为专利质量的代理变量,建立生存分析模型,利用SPSS统计软件研究了这些早期指标表征专利质量的有效性。研究表明,该技术领域中权利要求项数的增加能够降低国内专利生存危险,专利说明书页数和发明人数的增加能够降低国外专利生存风险,对应专利组的平均专利质量也相对高。结果说明,权利要求项数、说明书页数、发明人数等早期文献指标能够不同程度地表征专利质量。本研究结果、思路及方法对探索和确定早期专利评价指标特别是适合中国专利数据的指标具有启发性,也为从广义虚拟经济的角度研究专利资产价值提供参考。  相似文献

专利数量是发展专利质量的基础,而专利质量的高低是专利创造的核心判断标准和专利实施应用的重要依据,是科技创新产出客观准确的度量。研究表明,武汉市规模以上企业专利数量发展迅速,但专利总量偏低、质量不高,需加大研发投入和专利管理,进一步提高企业专利数量,提升企业专利质量。  相似文献
