A critically important component for all new and continuing reference librarian training is the rapidly changing demographic climate at academic library reference desks. Public libraries have historically been the primary public service agencies dealing with diverse clientele. Academic librarians must rapidly catch up with them, as well as with other fields - business, education, social work - for whom the word "multicultural" is already integrated into their lexicons. Isolated academic libraries throughout the country are pioneering with public service training programs that reflect these dramatic changes in clientele. Further, general suggestions are put forth outlining the significance of shared goals, administrative support, and an understanding of the issues as necessary prerequisites to any multicultural training program.  相似文献

This workshop evaluates and compares a variety of document delivery methods, including (1) van service, (2) traditional interlibrary loan, and (3) commercia1 on-demand services. With clients beginning to view librarians as essential professionals, there is a tremendous opportunity to combine well-designed services with the new technology and move into the role of assisting people to solve information problems. An ad hoc committee of the Librarian's Association of the University of California (LAUC) was charged with the task of organizing a workshop on diversity for all University of California librarians, and writing a report with recommendations generated by the participants of the workshop. From start to finish the entire operation took almost three years. Difficulties were encountered along the way: with the composition of the committee, the expectations of the LAUC executive board, the hindrance in writing a document by a collective, and the sensitive interrelationshps created among the committee members while dealing, at times, with an explosive topic. The importance and impact of the final report, "The Many Voices of Diversity," may not be recognized for several years since the recommendations presented go far beyond the common issues of cultural diversity. For the committee members it was an invigorating and rewarding experience that will not easily be forgotten and they would like to see this document become a model for other academic libraries.  相似文献

The first official transaction of the Institute for Sex Research, when it was incorporated in 1947, was to purchase the research materials and erotica collected by Dr. Alfred C. Kinsey. These materials now form the core of the largest collection of materials relating to human sexual behavior. The library, art, film, and photograph collections are open to qualified scholars and professionals with demonstrable research needs. Although the collections are not open to the general public, access to information contained in the collections is possible through the Information Services Department of the Institute.  相似文献

In the automation process, it is very important to keep the human factor before you at all times. People who are computer-shy need to be informed, and kept informed, about each step the library takes on the road to automation. It is vital not only to communicate often with the staff as each goal is reached, but to keep the public informed as well. Patrons who know what to expect from the system chosen will be able to use the system to their advantage. In the composition classroom, writing teachers regularly communicate different ideas about library research - a necessary component of the research paper - than reference librarians do. The contradictions confuse the student. And a lack of mutual understanding limits the dialogue between composition teachers and reference librarians. A survey of pedagogical theories about the research process in the composition classroom and the reference library illustrates the discrepancies. Although no one soulution for this rift in communication is possible, understanding the different approaches is necessary to restore the dialogue between the two fields.  相似文献
