ABSTRACT

The American Association of Community Colleges has determined over 40% of the population attending a post-secondary institution is enrolled in a two-year community college. The majority of this student population could be described as nontraditional, including first-generation students, underrepresented populations, and single parents working full or part-time jobs while attending classes. This student population is more likely to experience stress and anxiety, increasing their need for mental health services. Despite this demonstrated need, there has been little research conducted on two-year community college campuses relating to mental health services. The purpose of this article is to discuss the need for research on mental health needs and services at two-year community colleges.  相似文献

College campuses often host students who come from families where one or more parent has been affected by a bipolar or depressive disorder. The present study sought to determine whether these students face unique challenges in college, including increased adjustment difficulties as well as greater caregiving burden associated with their parents’ illness. Participants (N?=?89) were undergraduate students at a large public university in the South (27 had a parent with bipolar disorder; 30 had a parent with major depressive disorder [MDD]; 32 had no parent history of a mood disorder). Semistructured interviews were used to assess student symptoms of mood disorders and mood disorder symptoms within their immediate family. Self-report measures were used to assess college adjustment and levels of caregiving burden faced by the students. We found that students with a family history of bipolar disorder and MDD had significantly greater difficulty adjusting to college. These difficulties persisted even after controlling for whether the student themselves had been affected by a mood disorder. The students of a parent with either bipolar disorder or MDD also reported significantly more burden associated with caring for their parents. College campus mental health professionals need to be aware that students with a parent with bipolar disorder or MDD face unique challenges adjusting to college that are only partially related to an increased risk for mood disorders.  相似文献

This article describes the development and implementation of a peer advocate program for eating disorders and body image outreach on a college campus. Empirical and conceptual literature on the use of peer educators and peer advocates in college student mental health is reviewed. Peer advocate program mission, history, implementation, and training components are described. Learning outcome assessment findings of peer advocate learning are discussed. A counseling center perspective on benefits, challenges, and limitations of facilitating this peer advocate program is shared.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Research indicates that many college students report posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or substance use disorder (SUD), yet there has been scant attention paid to the co-occurrence of these disorders in college students. This review examines the co-occurrence of PTSD and SUD in college students. Recommendations for counseling centers are provided regarding the assessment of this population, an overview of treatment issues, and three areas of clinical importance when working with this population: risk behaviors, interpersonal violence, and social isolation. 为了探讨生命愿景与大学生心理健康状况的关系,采用症状自评量表(SCL-90)与生命愿景量表对不同年级280名大学生进行了调查,并用SPSS13.0软件进行了分析。结果表明:女大学生生命愿景整体水平略低于男生,不存在显著差异,但消极生命意义的得分显著低于男生;男女大学生心理健康状况没有显著差异;各个年级在焦虑、恐怖和偏执的因子上存在着显著的差异;大学生生命愿景与心理健康状况之间没有显著的相关,但消极的生命意义与SCL-90各因子呈正相关。  相似文献

本研究采用开放式问卷调查法和量表法,对593名大学生的幸福感状况进行了调查。结果发现:(1)影响大学生幸福感有七个因素,即自我意识、学校学习、人际交往、恋爱、工作与社会适应、家庭环境、休闲活动。其中,自我意识是影响大学生幸福感的最主要因素。(2)大多数学生心理健康,常能体验到幸福。(3)大学生幸福感在性别、月均消费上差异显著,而在专业、年级上差异不显著。根据调查结果,我们为学校心理健康教育提出了可行性建议。  相似文献

The assessment and treatment of students with borderline personality traits or disorders poses specific challenges for clinicians at college and university mental health centers complicated, frequently, by a model of brief treatment frameworks and high patient volumes. Students with borderline pathology will be well represented in student health centers and will likely generate unusually complex and concerning situations for clinicians and administrators. Accurate diagnosis of borderline pathology, avoidance of iatrogenic complications related to misdiagnosis, and referral to informed and evidence-based interventions can guide clinicians’ management. Risk management concerns are best addressed by a clear and realistic understanding of the borderline pathology. The author proposes a variety of interventions for college and university mental health clinicians with the goal of accurate diagnosis of borderline personality, management focusing on safety for both students and clinicians, and targeted referrals for both borderline symptomatology and co-occurring conditions.  相似文献

单亲贫困大学生这一特殊群体,由于受社会、家庭和经济等因素的影响,成为心理健康问题的高发人群.本文采用《不安诊断测验量表》和《临床症状自评量表》对安徽省不同区域5所大学1000名大学生心理现状进行了调查,结果表明:单亲贫困大学生在缺乏自我控制力、妄想与疑心倾向、人际关系敏感、抑郁和焦虑心理、睡眠及饮食状况不良等五个方面的心理健康问题表现比较显著,明显高于普通大学生.据此,本研究提出了构建以学校为中心的心理健康教育平台、建立单亲贫困大学生心理健康档案、利用现代网络实施心理健康咨询与辅导、引导单亲贫困大学生踊跃参加社会交往活动等心理健康教育措施.  相似文献

为探讨体育舞蹈锻炼对女大学生心理健康的影响。随机抽取广西师范大学、桂林师范高等专科学校、桂林航天工业高等专科学校60名大学生进行为期20周的体育舞蹈锻炼,对其锻炼前后进行心理健康自评量表(SCL-90量表)的测试,结果显示:体育舞蹈锻炼后女大学生心理健康总体水平显著提高,且呈显著性差异(P〈0.05),其中“人际关系”、“抑郁”、“敌对”、“焦虑”等项因子的健康水平异常显著(P〈0.01)。  相似文献

This study examined the mediating effect of psychological stress in the relationship between social support and mental health symptomatology in undergraduate students. Participants (n = 368) completed measures of social support, psychological stress, and mental health symptomatology. Bootstrapping estimates of indirect effects indicated a significant influence of psychological stress in the relationship between social support and both anxiety and depression symptomatology. Implications for mental health promotion and treatment on college campuses are discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Early childhood mental health consultation (ECMHC) is a framework that continues to expand as students’ social-emotional needs emerge at younger ages. The present systematic review examines the extant literature surrounding the use of ECMHC and behavioral consultation in addressing mental health concerns and challenging behaviors in preschool students. Findings associated with this systematic review suggest that ECMHC could be a promising practice for targeting internalizing and externalizing behavioral concerns in prekindergarten students across a variety of settings. However, more research is needed in the areas of mental health/behavioral consultation and disciplinary disproportionality, as well as on the impact of such practices on preschool children of color. Implications for school psychologists are discussed, as are disciplinary practices when providing ECMHC and behavioral consultation services with students of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.  相似文献

本测查研究运用国内外比较通行的心理健康测量工具SCL-90量表,对三门峡职业技术学院三千多名大学生进行了随机抽样测查研究,将测查所获数据输入目前国际上先进的spss10.0进行处理,并将结果与一般性普通高校同类测查结果进行比较分析,探索高职学生心理健康现状及特点,获得了初步的研究结果。研究发现高职学生的心理健康水平从总体上看比较低,与一般性普通高校学生相比,其心理健康九项因子中问题比较突出的依次是:恐惧,焦虑,抑郁,偏执,强迫症状等。  相似文献

Abstract

This discussion explores challenges that college of education faculty members in the United States encountered when developing and implementing technology standards for students. The goal of this research project was to gain an understanding of faculty members' experience with technology, particularly in the context of implementing standards in response to the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education requirements for teacher education academic programs. Findings of this qualitative, naturalistic research project revealed a number of faculty concerns regarding technology in teaching and standards for students, including technology's impacts on communication and relationships in teaching, and anxiety around technology use. Utilizing student peers is one vital avenue for improving the prevention, detection, and treatment of mental health disorders on college campuses (The Campus Suicide Prevention Center of Virginia, 2011). This article will briefly review research findings indicating the importance of student peers and then focus on a promising model and growing movement, established by Active Minds Inc., an organization dedicated to engaging students in mental health promotion and prevention on campus. We will describe Active Minds’ history, goals, model, and programming, and give indications about future directions. After a decade of existence, Active Minds has seen firsthand the challenges and rewards of utilizing student peers to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Although college student mental health concerns are on the rise, many struggling students do not seek psychological treatment when needed. Stigma toward psychological treatment has been demonstrated to influence intent to seek treatment in college student populations. This study aimed to identify factors that predict treatment stigma in college students by examining other forms of student-held stigma, parent-held stigma, and mental health literacy. Results indicated that student-held personal, perceived, and self-stigma all predicted student attitudes toward treatment, while parent-held personal stigma was found to predict self-stigma in students. Those individuals who had received previous education about psychological disorders had lower levels of personal stigma, and, surprisingly, higher levels of self-stigma. Implications for campus outreach programming are discussed.  相似文献

Summary

Working with clients with both substance abuse and other Axis I mental health concerns is becoming more and more common on a college campus as well as in the general population. By utilizing both brief therapy techniques and a harm reduction approach, the therapist engages the client where the client is ready to begin in an attempt to motivate the client toward healthier choices. This case study examines the inter-relationship among alcohol abuse, attention-deficit disorder, anxiety, and depression.  相似文献
