Science historian Ronald Numbers once remarked that the two most influential historians of science of the 20th century were Thomas Kuhn and Stephen Jay Gould. All historians are deeply familiar with Kuhn's work and influence, and most know of the remarkable impact Gould has had on evolutionary theory through both his professional and popular works. But little attention has been paid to the depth, scope, and importance of Gould's r?le as historian and philosopher of science, and his use of popular science exposition to reinforce old knowledge and generate new. This paper presents the results of an extensive quantitative content analysis of Gould's 22 books, 101 book reviews, 479 scientific papers, and 300 Natural History essays, in terms of their subject matter (Evolutionary Theory, History and Philosophy of Science, Natural History, Paleontology/Geology, Social Science/Commentary), and thematic dichotomies (Theory-Data, Time's Arrow-Time's Cycle, Adaptationism- Nonadaptationalism, Punctuationism-Gradualism, Contingency-Necessity). Special emphasis is placed on the interaction between the subjects and themata, how Gould has used the history of science to reinforce his evolutionary theory (and vice versa), and how his philosophy of science has influenced both his evolutionary theory and his historiography. That philosophy can best be summed up in a quotation from Charles Darwin, frequently cited by Gould: 'All observation must be for or against some view if it is to be of any service'. Gould followed Darwin's advice throughout his career, including his extensive writings on the history and philosophy of science. 相似文献

多策略方法所筛选的有价值样本进行人工标注,同时更新到训练集进行模型迭代训练。【结果/结论】以古籍《宋史》
为例进行研究,所提出的方法分别在 BERT-BiLSTM-CRF、BERT-CRF等古文断句模型训练过程中减少原来训
练样本量的50%、55%,进一步验证了方法的有效性。【创新/局限】加权多策略选样的方法为古文断句模型训练提供

It is a common assumption that digital technology stores and retrieves text differently than physical libraries do. Websites and digitized text uploaded on them are retrieved via algorithms, tied together by links, and so on, whereas physical libraries are structured by classification schemes, catalogs, and indexes. Addressed here is the issue of ‘topic analysis’ which is used to determine a text’s topic structure, a representation indicating what topics are included in a text and how those topics change within the text. Topic analysis consists of two main tasks: topic identification and text segmentation. While topic analysis would be extremely useful in a variety of text processing applications, no previous study has so far sufficiently addressed it. A statistical learning approach to the issue is proposed in this paper. More specifically, topics here are represented by means of word clusters, and a finite mixture model, referred to as a stochastic topic model (STM), is employed to represent a word distribution within a text. In topic analysis, a given text is segmented by detecting significant differences between STMs, and topics are identified by means of estimation of STMs. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method significantly outperforms methods that combine existing techniques. 相似文献

普赖斯是科学史定量研究的集大成者,而科学史定量研究亦是普赖斯学术研究的逻辑主线。科学增长指数规律是普赖斯科学史定量研究的起点,其思想源头可以追溯到少年时代对科学的好奇与思考、学术生涯早期在物理学与数学方面的积淀,以及从布拉格和帕金森那里得到的直接启发。从“科学是‘印纸中心’的累积活动”这一基本认识和假设出发,普赖斯继承并发展了基于历史统计的科学史定量研究方法,形成了“普赖斯三定律”。与此同时,普赖斯利用“科学引文索引”探秘科学论文的网络结构,描绘了从知识基础走向知识前沿的科学发展整体图景,开启了基于科学论文的引文分析主流方向。普赖斯既是科学史定量研究方法的积极宣扬者,也是富有成效的实践者。 相似文献
