Academic research libraries have a tradition of collaboration, from selecting foreign language material to licensing electronic resources. Although most storage facilities have tended to be local, some libraries have collaborated on operating shared storage facilities. The growth of digital repositories of printed materials has given the library community the opportunity to engage in a conversation about how to collaboratively take responsibility for the long-term selection and preservation of the print originals. Establishing regional repositories will allow member libraries to draw down local print collections. This review article will trace the major development of this progression from local storage facility to regional print repository. 相似文献

This paper is designed to measure the use of Information Technology (IT) in the university libraries of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh with an ulterior objective to establish some co-relation between quality in libraries and use of IT. The paper highlights the use of hardware and software facilities in university libraries. It also highlights the access of networks, information services and barriers in IT applications. A survey conducted on four university libraries, namely Panjab University library, Chandigarh; Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla; Punjabi university Library, Patiala; and Guru Nanak Dev University Library, Amritsar found that only Panjab University Library, Chandigarh and GND university library, Amritsar have provided computerised access to in-house databases. The findings presented are based on a survey conducted with the help of questionnaires, interview and observation methods. Library literature reveals that quality depends on merging print culture with digital culture but the result of this survey confirm that print culture is still dominating in university libraries of this region. 相似文献

In 2014, Sam Houston State University Library librarians distributed a survey to students, faculty and staff to better understand how the university community was using library materials for recreational reading. The survey found that patrons had preference for print materials with a growing interest in other formats. A significant number of respondents did not view the library as a source of recreational reading materials; those who did read across a broad swath of genres. Greater understanding of patron recreational reading preferences empower the library to expand the library collection to meet all patron demands. 相似文献

This paper presents the results of a large scale survey designed to investigate usage patterns and library patron attitudes toward e-books. The survey reveals a university community's discovery and knowledge of e-books, their likes and dislikes about book content in electronic format as opposed to print, and their predictions of how they will use electronic and print book materials in the future. The survey shows that acceptance of e-books has reached a level where they have become an important library service. The results, based on a study conducted in collaboration with Springer, break down e-book awareness and attitudes into faculty, graduate student, and undergraduate student constituent groups. Additionally, statistics are presented to complement the survey results by showing that the usage of e-book content at the University of Illinois is increasing at a rapid pace.1 相似文献

随着期刊市场纸本与电子共同出版模式的形成,以及期刊出版业的垄断集团化,为了获取高额利润,一些出版商采取纸本与电子版捆绑销售模式来销售电子期刊数据库,其捆绑模式有保留现有纸本订购、规定一个最低订购额以及提供E-only和纸本+电子捆绑三种形式。随着图书馆馆藏数字化,出版商的纸本捆绑销售出现了一些转变,有的出版商允许用户将纸本刊转成电子刊,有的允许用户取消纸本载体转而支付电子内容费,有的取消纸本捆绑启用E-only模式,但这些转变并没有给用户节省多少费用,并没有在真正意义上取消纸本捆绑,只是出版商换了一种销售方式而已。 相似文献

[目的/意义]通过研究国外图书馆联盟印本馆藏分析项目,旨在为我国图书馆界开展联盟印本馆藏分析提供实施流程和馆藏分析方法层面的建议。[方法/过程]选取3个具有代表性的联盟印本馆藏分析项目,即美国OhioLINK-OCLC馆藏与流通分析项目、澳大利亚研究图书馆馆藏分析项目、英国CURL/RSLP馆藏匹配项目,从研究目的、馆藏分析实施方法、馆藏分析结果、馆藏分析结论4个方面进行研究,并从数据来源、数据处理和馆藏分析维度方面对3个项目进行比较分析。[结果/结论]提出我国开展联盟馆藏分析时应注意联合目录数据库的重要性,解决分类号与学科主题的映射关系,以及根据研究目的选择相应的分析维度。 相似文献

The long-standing cooperative culture within the research library community should serve as a useful foundation for building regional cooperative agreements to support repositories of print journal backfiles. Serious storage constraints facing Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison mandated an effort to tackle this problem in a deliberative and coordinated way. An inter-institutional Task Force was formed to design and implement a process with a selected group of titles as a pilot project. The immediate goal was to liberate shelf space with an eye toward the future development of a consortial collection management plan for the storage of print journals among the three institutions. 相似文献

Abstract Popular for their ability to provide full-text linking, OpenURL link servers, such as SFX, can also interface with online catalogs and interlibrary loan modules, giving library users the ability to locate articles in print or request items not owned by their local institution. This article examines four different approaches to integrating print holding information into SFX, detailing the advantages and drawbacks of each approach. The author reports on the results of a survey on serials processing backlogs in technical services. Approximately 40% of responding libraries had some type of backlog of serials, both print and electronic. The types of materials in the backlogs and the factors that contributed to them are discussed, together with the storage of backlogged materials and the public's access to them. A dearth of published literature about graphic design in libraries reveals that little attention has been focused on librarians' visual communication abilities and the impact of print and Web publications on users' interaction with library services and collections. This case study examines one approach to improving the quality of graphic design in libraries. Through a combination of social media and accessible cloud-based storage, Librarian Design Share, a crowdsourced archive of library-related visual materials, highlights exemplars of visual communication in libraries and makes designs freely available for adaptation under a creative commons license. 相似文献

A medium-sized academic library system conducted a multi-year (2012–2016), large-scale ethnographic study using a survey, observations, and in-depth interviews. The goal of the project was to better understand how students conduct research and study in the library. The analysis of the large pool of data resulted in various reports of theoretical and practical nature. This article addresses one aspect of the findings: undergraduate and graduate student use of library resources. The findings offer an array of considerations for designing effective library services and provide a more nuanced understanding of how student use the library website, libguides, and library databases as well as print and electronic collections. 相似文献

Abstract For most research libraries, remote storage of significant portions of their print collections has become an economic necessity. Historically, user objections to remote storage have focused on access-related issues: i.e., lack of browsability, cumbersome requesting procedures, lengthy retrieval times, and lack of content information about materials held in storage locations. Research libraries today operate in an environment of high user expectations for convenience and immediacy in getting information, and for accessing that information remotely. In an environment filled with such expectations, print materials with no alternate electronic format, stored in off-site facilities, and inadequately described in online catalogs are less likely to get even the occasional usage they merit. Given the necessity of remote storage, research libraries need to address the issue of making stored print collections more accessible. This paper discusses three strategies for enhancing access to remotely stored library collections: (1) user-focused access policies; (2) enhanced OPAC displays; and (3) new technologies for retrieval and delivery. 相似文献

[目的/意义]近年来,各高校图书馆纸质文献借阅量逐年递减,致使纸质文献存在的价值与危机凸显。如何客观看待纸质馆藏的作用,是需要值得关注的重要问题。[方法/过程]对北京理工大学图书馆近3年（2013-2015年）的可外借纸质文献借阅量、文献利用率和借阅周期等情况进行统计,并对馆内纸质文献的流通现状以及存在的问题进行分析。[结果/结论]图书馆需要正视纸质馆藏危机,重视纸质馆藏建设,包括提出合理配置馆藏资源,加强借阅管理,改善馆舍环境,加强管理宣传、提升服务和加强资源共享共建等措施,营造全面推广阅读氛围,积极引导读者培养良好阅读习惯,提高馆藏文献利用率。 相似文献

This article analyses whether a specific news event is reported differently online compared to print newspapers. The question is hardly new but has increased in importance as more readers pass from print newspapers to online news. The conditions of news selection and production are discussed departing from the theories of market-driven journalism and media logic, and are related to aspects of audience needs and gratifications, as well as professional norms and standards. A content analysis of news reporting during the 2010 Swedish election campaign reveals no significant differences between how major newspapers reported the aspects, issues and actors online compared to in print. Individuals using online news received the same information about the election campaign as those reading the print paper, which indicates a displacing rather than complementary effect of online journalism on print journalism. 相似文献
