Based on the trade data and three international competitiveness evaluation indexes, namely, international market share, trade competitive index and revealed comparative advantage index, this paper analyzes the international competitiveness of Chinese publishing industry from horizontal and vertical dimensions. The results show that, the international competitiveness of Chinese publishing industry is enhanced year by year. However, compared with the USA, the UK, Germany and other developed countries, it is still significantly weaker, and the gap between each other has the potential to expand.  相似文献

The response of the UK Government to the Report on science publishing by the Science and Technology Select Committee of the House of Commons is criticized for failing to take the necessary action to research or help catalyse a change in the publishing model. The initiatives of the National Institutes of Health and the Wellcome Foundation in setting up central archives are examined and their utility questioned. This study examines the extent of concentration in the journal publishing industry. A number of aspects are considered: publishers, journal impacts, countries, and languages. For journals indexed in JCR from 1997 to 2009, just 0.2% of publishers produce 50% of journals and articles, and 0.3% of publishers account for the top 50% of citations, impact factors and immediacy indices. More than a half of publishers in JCR are from four countries: USA, UK, Germany and Japan. In addition, more than a half of journals come from the USA and UK. Examining the publishers' interactions in terms of buying and selling journals shows the extent of change by acquisition, and the acquisition links between publishers. The findings confirm that the international market of journal publishing is essentially dominated by a few publishers.  相似文献

This article provides a quantitative assessment of the extent to which UK learned societies rely on publishing revenues. Drawing on work completed as part of a Universities UK project to monitor the transition to open access in the United Kingdom, it considers the risks that increased market consolidation and a shift to open access publishing present for societies' financial sustainability in the coming years. The project identified 279 UK societies that publish peer‐reviewed publications. It is estimated that publishing accounts for just over £300 million, or 26%, of these societies' overall revenues of £1.2 billion, but an in‐depth analysis of 30 societies found that the proportion is as high as 80% in some cases. Publishing is typically a profitable activity for societies, and thereby supports their charitable activities and makes an important contribution to their overall financial sustainability. Although most societies are presently in good financial health, the combined pressures of market consolidation and open access, coupled with early indications of an increase in the costs of publishing, suggests that their reliance on publishing could prove an uncertain foundation in the years to come.  相似文献

This article outlines in detail the ten strategic goals that the UAE publishing industry has identified to lead a comprehensive transformation of the industry and to cement its position as a regional leader. The main goals revolve around building regional and global partnerships, developing a global publishing hub, improving legal framework for the all the stakeholders of the industry, building quality Arabic content for local and regional readers, supporting educational publishing, launching initiatives to encourage reading for pleasure, improving distribution networks and retail, transforming libraries, and instilling a sense of pride and understanding of local culture while supporting creative talents and skills. Also, this article will share information about some leading initiatives being implemented in Sharjah and the United Arab Emirates, and future initiatives to be implemented to achieve the ten goals.  相似文献

This article presents an analysis of key trends affecting the academic publishing industry. It reviews funding and sales, scholarly collaboration networks, developments in OA, and monograph publishing. These key areas were identified in an earlier article that asked whether academic publishing was evolving or going through a revolution. The review of funding and sales presented here shows a mixed market with growth being challenged as library funds and purchase choices affect expenditure. Scholarly collaboration networks were previously identified as a major threat to traditional publishing, and a review of this area demonstrates that greater sharing of content is empowering librarians and academics to take a stronger stand in publisher negotiations. OA continues to be debated, and a review of responses to Plan S (the most coordinated policy to date) demonstrates conflicting views within academia, funders, and publishers. OA has yet to revolutionize the existing business models. Similarly, monograph publishing remains slow to evolve, although there are increasing initiatives to adopt more open, and online, models. The conclusion of this review is that libraries are likely to be the key promoters of change in the publishing environment and are more influential than other players in forcing evolution.  相似文献

The combination of Japan’s large, prosperous population and its thriving consumer electronics industry appears to the outside world to be an ideal environment for eBook adoption. In fact, despite cross industry initiatives that date back to 2003, widespread digitization of books is limited to Japanese comics (manga). This article will explain the origins of the Japanese eBook market, its current state and the looming entry of Amazon, Apple and Google. The publishing industry in Mexico is a distinctive environment due to several elements: the role of the State government as the main publisher or buyer of books, the historic and central role of the Spanish publishing industry in the direction and influence of Mexican market through their affiliate companies, and the influence of the US book market concerning influences and trends. In a country of 120 million people, where the book reading rate is very low, as is the number of bookstores, I explore the changes that are taking place right now in the context of the crisis in the Spanish book market and why I see a promising future for the general interest publishing market in the Spanish language in Mexico and the US.  相似文献

The conversations surrounding ‘diversity’ in the Anglo-American book publishing industry have increased in recent years, and often centre around the lack of representation of publishing professionals, authors, and characters of colour. This paper contextualises these discussions within British YA, a market that has grown in popularity since 2006. Through an analysis of the corpus of all Young Adult fiction titles published, in the UK, during the 2006–2016 period, this paper will investigate what percentage of the titles were created by authors of colour; to determine whether this number has risen over the years, and to pinpoint any patterns and anomalies that emerge over the time period.  相似文献

In this article, the author discusses opportunities and challenges facing the magazine industry as it migrates from print to digital distribution models. While the industry can achieve outsized returns in the digital realm based on the unique content and brand equity developed in its traditional business, multiple hurdles confront publishing industry executives in the process. The changing landscape of data access, consumer engagement, production workflows and magazine industry business models are all discussed. An analogy to the television industry’s efforts to address new technology is used. National Vocational Qualifications, NVQs, have received a mixed reception in the UK and not least in the publishing industry. The background to the introduction and development of NVQs is covered and the process by which the qualifications are implemented, the procedures for assessment and relevant organisations are described. I came up with the first issue in December 2006 containing an interview with a publishing professional and news about the industry with the title Publishing Today (PT). The article analyses the social media activity around two genre fiction titles published in the UK. The research is focused on the platforms Twitter and Facebook as they are the sites currently most used as marketing tools by the publishing industry. Over 10,000 social media posts were collected and categorised to create a timeline of social media activity for two case studies. The findings were then compared to sales data from Nielsen BookScan to give an understanding to the value of social media marketing in the publishing industry. The findings show that social media is most effective as a marketing platform when there is already an established community, allowing publishers to converse with readers. While social media is less effective at marketing new books written by debut authors with no existing readership, it is none the less an important tool in the marketing plan as it provides a platform to engage with readers around significant events.  相似文献

With the presence of online, digital content and new services for manipulating and searching it, printing and publishing firms may experience technological uncertainty and risk and diminishing profitability. Mergers and acquisitions are approaches for dealing with the current technology and market changes that are underway in the printing and publishing industry. Using an event study methodology and a sample of 60 U.S. printing and publishing firms, this study investigates the value creation of acquiring information technology (IT) services firms. The study's findings reveal that printing and publishing firms experience significant increases in their market values as a result of acquiring IT services firms. In fact, non-newspaper firms realize the largest increases in market value. The study's findings should help academicians and practitioners understand the kinds of strategic acquisitions from which printing and publishing firms are most likely to benefit.  相似文献
