Unauthorized use of copyrighted materials is widespread and has been facilitated by technological advances. Copyright piracy
has been reduced by the actions of the United States Trade Representative, the Association of American Publishers, and the
International Intellectual Property Alliance. A number of successful antipiracy activities are reviewed, along with areas
where problems continue.
Fred Kobrak is a partner in Higham Kobrak Associates, consultants on the international publishing industry. He was formerly
president of Collier Macmillan International, New York, the international arm of Macmillan Publishing Company.

This article considers the British experience of developing education for publishers at the end of the 1990s. To introduce
the subject, it briefly outlines recent trends in the UK in publishing and bookselling: the size and nature of the workforce
as revealed in recent surveys; and what employers recently indicated that they are looking for in their employees. Then, it
summarises some of the developments that are taking place in education and training, before outlining the courses currently
available in the Universities, their growing emphasis on business management and Information Technology, and the benefits
to employers of recruiting students from these courses. Finally, it raises issues that will become more significant in the
future: new legal and ethical challenges, and the responsibility for preservation and conservation arising from technological
changes; keeping existing staff up to date; the international dimensions of the industry; retaining links between the academic
community and the industry; regulating standards of professional practice; and the development of research.
An earlier and shorter version of this paper, entitled “Education for publishing— the British experience,” was presented by
Ian Johnson at a colloquium “Books, Publishers and Libraries,” organised by Zagreb Chamber of Commerce’s Association of Publishers
and Booksellers and the University of Zagreb’ s Department of Information Science in December 1996.
IAN JOHNSON has been Head of the School of Information and Media at The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland since
1989, and initiated the School’s development as a centre for publishing education and research in 1992. He is currently joint
editor of Libri; a member of the Editorial Board of Education for Information; and Chairman of the Heads of Schools and Departments Committee of BAILER: the British Association for Information and Library
Education and Research, and of the Executive Board of EUCLID: the European Association for Library and Information Education
and Research.
JO ROYLE is Subject Leader for Publishing Studies and Course Leader for the BA/BA (Honours) in Publishing Studies in the School
of Information and Media, where she has taught since 1993. She is currently researching aspects of branding in publishing,

Far from being a simple reflection of reality, archives are constructed windows into personal and collective processes. They
at once express and are instruments of prevailing relations of power. Verne Harris makes these arguments through an account
of archives and archivists in the context of South Africa's transition from apartheid to democracy. The account is deliberately
shaped around three themes — race, power, and public records. While he concedes that the constructedness of memory and the
dimension of power are most obvious in the extreme circumstances of oppression and rapid transition to democracy, he argues
that these are realities informing archives in all circumstances. He makes an appeal to archivists to enchant their work by
engaging these realities and by turning always towards the call of and for justice.
This essay draws heavily on four articles published previously by me: “Towards a Culture of Transparency: Public Rights of

The degree to which agreements between authors and publishers are left to free negotiation varies from country to country.
As the European nations move toward economic unity, a greater degree of conformity in literary common law is desirable. Any
common rules on publishing contracts should balance the interests of publishers and authors so that authors receive a fair
share of all exploitations of their work and publishers are free to exploit the works in all possible ways. Exploitation includes

In July 2006, the General Administration of Press and Publication of the People’s Public of China hosted a forum entitled
“The Support by the National Press and Publishing Industry and the Construction of a New Socialist Country”. Since then, the
construction work of Rural Bookrooms has been carried out and thousands of the “Benefit-for-Peasant Libraries”, “Rural Bookrooms”
and “New Countryside Libraries”, etc., has been built up in different parts of rural areas and in peasants’ residential sites
in urban areas to meet the demand of a large number of the farmers for reading and improve their scientific and cultural quality.
Up to now, the building of Rural Bookrooms has become one main part of the cultural construction in China on a countrywide
basis. It will be historically significant in improving the peasants’ scientific and cultural development, narrowing the gap
between rural and urban areas, maintaining the peasants’ basis right of cultural learning and promoting the modernization

The existing open-source object-oriented systems that can be used as an environment to upload and to store information-educational
resources for distance learning (open-source LMS\LCMS: ATutor, Claroline, Dokeos, Sakai, and Moodle), are analyzed. The use
of Moodle (a Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) as the environment for the learning portal of the Mendeleyev
University of Chemical Technology of Russia () is justified. The capabilities of Moodle with regard to the development of information-educational resources are explored
and educational materials are elaborated for a course of study, viz., “Protection of Intellectual Property,” e.g., theoretical
materials, seminar and colloquia exercises, tests for interim and final control of student’s knowledge level, as well as the

This article focuses on several conceptual and structural issues that are central to copyright compliance in the electronic
age. It presumes the development of a national electronic network for storing, organizing, accessing, managing, and charging
for information. The article first discusses the implications of constructing a comprehensive electronic “highway,” or Digital
Library System (DLS), which would link information to the widespread community of users. It then presents the ramifications
of a highly decentralized set of subsystems serving rights holders and users, linked by protocols established by the DLS.
A discussion of the implications of digital interchangeability for copyright follows. The article ends with an analysis of
alternatives to existing intellectual property rights conveyance systems, and concludes that current ownership structures,
and systems for conveying rights and royalties, will remain the foundation for copyright in the electronic world.

[目的/意义] 为切实了解当前高校知识产权信息服务现状,以微信服务为切入点,对高校知识产权信息服务实践进行分析与总结,以期为高校图书馆知识产权信息服务创新提供思路。[方法/过程] 对已自主成立知识产权信息服务中心的86家高校图书馆的官方订阅号进行调研,统计分析知识产权信息服务类文章的情况。从文章的发布时间、署名、服务栏目、阅读量以及具体内容5个维度进行剖析。[结果/结论] 处于蓬勃发展上升期的高校知识产权信息服务,规划管理制度日趋完善,人才队伍建设初见成效,服务内容拓展加深,但仍需要搭乘“高校国家知识产权信息服务中心”创建与发展的快车,从加强顶层设计与联盟建设,优化服务模式与服务内容,推进建立考核评估体系入手,进行合理规划布局与有效实施,才能保障高校知识产权信息服务的可持续发展。 相似文献

The defining trope for the humanities in the last 30 years has been typified by the move from “work” to “text.” The signature text defining this move has been Roland Barthes seminal essay, “From Work to Text.” But the current move
in library, archival and information studies toward the “document” as the key term offers challenges for contemporary humanities research. In making our own movement from work to text to document, we can explicate fully the complexity of conducting archival humanistic research within disciplinary and institutional contexts
in the twenty-first century. This essay calls for a complex perspective, one that demands that we understand the raw materials
of scholarship are processed by disciplines, by institutions, and by the work of the scholar. When we understand our materials
as constrained by disciplines, we understand them as “works.” When we understand them as constrained by the institutions of
memory that preserve and grant access to them, we understand them as “documents.” And when we understand them as the ground
for our own interpretive activity, we understand them as “texts.” When we understand that humanistic scholarship requires
an awareness of all three perspectives simultaneously (an understanding demonstrated by case studies in historical studies
of the discipline of rhetoric), we will be ready for a richer historical scholarship as well as a richer collaboration between

The Colophon, published from 1925 through 1935 for an audience of book collectors and connoisseurs, illuminates the debate
over the basis of a book's value: genuine quality or artificial scarcity. It also illustrates the distinction between genuine
news about the book industry and “publicity hypnosis”—today’s “hype.” The magazine’s authors, designers, typographers, printers,
and illustrators were among the finest of their day.
Claire Badaracco is an assistant professor at Marquette University, and is currently writing a series of articles about Anglo-American
book publishing, journalism, and publicity trades between 1920 and 1940 with the support of The British Academy, the National
Endowment, and the Bibliographical Society of America. Her work has been published inAmerican Literary Realism, Journalism Quarterly, Essays in Business and Economic History, and other journals. The Library of Congress, The Center for The Book, is publishing her monograph “The Lakeside Press Four

Digital technology has authors in a rundown. While Internet users question whether copyright has a place in the National Information
Infrastructure, print publishers are insisting on acquiring from authors rights to all electronic media, known or unknown,
whether now existing or yet to be developed. Contrary to the intent of copyright law, publishers are not offering additional
compensation for tying up these rights. The solution, says the Authors League of America, lies in adopting the proposals of
the Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights and in taking a further step: rendering rights to unknown media inalienable.
Paul Aiken, representing the Authors League of America, presented a version of this article to the Working Group on Intellectual
Property Rights of the White House Information Infrastructure Task Force in September 1994 as commentary on the preliminary
