ABSTRACT Rare materials collected by individuals, in the past and in our own time, when given to research libraries become important public assets that, as cultural heritage collections, lend distinction to the institutions that receive them and benefit education and scholarship enormously. What motivates collectors to become donors is complex. Institutions seeking such gifts must consider a number of issues and activities when embarking on (or maintaining) an active program seeking gifts-in-kind, including the librarian's personality, development models, institutional realities, challenges (negotiating, tax issues, deeds of gift), headaches (difficult donors, deposits, saying “No”), fulfilling obligations, and de-accessioning gifts. 相似文献

AbstractAccepting donations has been a fundamental aspect of librarianship for years. The world’s greatest collections, from Carnegie Libraries to the Library of Congress, have been built by the generosity of others. Yet, in the modern era, gifts-in-kind are offered more democratically and come with mixed quality. This has led to a shift in how libraries look at gifts-in-kind as often more burdensome than genuinely helpful. This is because gifts come with costs to the library that donors fail to consider, and some gifts are offered with ulterior motives. To navigate these burdens and still encourage a generous public, libraries must have a clear written gift policy to ease stresses and anxieties on both the donor and the institution. In the case of academic law libraries, they often don’t share the exact experience of other libraries; however, they face some of the same challenges and require a written gift policy all the same. Examining the gift policies of other law libraries can establish a framework of essential elements when establishing a new gift policy at an institution. 相似文献

Academic libraries have a long tradition of endorsing and creating written collection development policies to communicate, both internally and externally, their dynamic collection practices. As revealed by a literature search, academic libraries, over time, appear to have abandoned this practice. This article documents how Texas A&M University Libraries embraced the ambitious task of resurrecting written collection development policies and, as part of this process, assessed the current state of collection development, systematically planned for future collection growth, and identified emerging fields of research requiring additional collection support. This process also undertook the integration of collection development into the organizational culture of the libraries. Reflecting on this process, the authors present the case for creating and maintaining written collection development policies in academic libraries. 相似文献

In early 1989 a questionnaire was sent to forty-eight public and twelve academic libraries in Rhode Island to ascertain the use of and attitudes toward schedules for reference collection maintenance. The great majority of libraries favored this approach, although the individual schedules varied greatly. Over seventy-five percent of the reporting libraries had or were in the process of developing written collection development policies, but few had any written policies concerning scheduled replacement and none had a written policy encompassing all the material replaced automatically on a schedule. 相似文献

This study examined the reference collection weeding and evaluation practices of a selected group of academic, public, and county library systems. Results revealed that only two of the fourteen libraries had written guidelines specifically for reference, and only one of these was a complete document. The most common unwritten criteria for weeding related to age and use of materials, and most libraries conducted systematic evaluation of the reference collection, primarily by means of comparisons to checklists or standard lists of recommended titles. However, most libraries did not regularly conduct formal use studies. The use of CD-ROM reference tools, which was fairly widespread and well accepted, was expected to have an increasingly significant impact on reference collection development in the future. After reviewing the historical significance of competitive rowing at Harvard and Yale universities and the literature dealing with rowing as a competitive sport, this article describes and reports the results of a checklist evaluation and simulated semi-availability study of the rowing collections of the Harvard and Yale University library systems. The results indicate, contrary to what might be expected, that major academic libraries can have noteworthy holdings in a specialized sports area. Harvard has a stronger rowing collection with a higher overall availability rate than does Yale. Comparison with a previous evaluation of the Free Library of Philadelphia's (FLP) rowing collection, based on the identical checklist, indicated its holdings are a bit stronger than Harvard's and considerably better than Yale's, but not as strong as the combined holdings of both Harvard and Yale. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to compare the value of gift materials added to the general collection of a small to medium-sized academic library with materials selected and purchased by the library. The measure employed to determine the relative value of the gifts vs. non-gifts was how often the materials were used within a 12-month period. Two groups of 77 books (gifts and purchased items) were tracked over the course of 1 year to determine if the gifts were used significantly less. Results indicate that donated books were used on average 0.87 times whereas non-gifts were used 1.38 times. A t-test was also applied demonstrating that the two groups were significantly different at the 0.05 level. This provides empirical data libraries can use to re-evaluate existing policies and procedures for handling gifts. 相似文献

Small libraries have problems with accepting gifts of older material. Older textbooks are probably worthless, while real rarities may belong elsewhere. The usefulness of the book to the collection must be considered. While textbooks age, monographs have a longer life, and history and biography last forever. Ephemeral pamphlets have historical value. Condition of the book also affects its value. A library should always keep publications about its own institution.Suggestions are given on whether to discard or sell, with warnings about pitfalls in selling. 相似文献

A library can represent the most valuable personal service which a medical society can offer to a physician; yet, libraries unfortunately are taking a lessening role in medical societies. Surveys show that medical society libraries have declined in number from seventy-one in 1942 to forty-eight at the present time. This paper offers a positive plan of action with the objective of enabling libraries to regain a position of eminence in medical societies. It is pointed out that there are four vital elements in stimulating the growth and development of a library. These are the constant enhancement of resources; the promotion of library services; the rendering of prompt, valuable services; and ultimately, the recognition of the library through gifts, endowments, and expressions of appreciation. 相似文献

A researcher with wide interests in the field of music and the music librarian at the same institution describe their separate views of collection development for university and college music libraries. Typically, articles on collection development are written from the perspective of the librarian/subject speclalist. This piece incorporates the viewpoints of two persons with differing academic functions and differing approaches to academic music libraries. One is an eclectic faculty member with a broad spectrum of research interest. The other is an experienced music librarian who manages the music library at the faculty member's institution. Two separate essays briefly outlining the views of the faculty member/consumer and the music librarian/supplier are given below.
