Abstract

The American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird) has an extensive English as a second language (ESL) program for graduate students. As a component of the content-based aspect of this program, students have a semester-long project involving finding information about a U.S. company and its place in its industry. The students must include information about corporate finance, marketing, corporate history, and an industry and competitor analysis. A business librarian at another institution created a website for a course in competitor analysis. A business librarian at another institution created a website for a course with a similar assignment; this website included hot links to sources of U.S. corporate and industrial data. This article discusses the structuring of the course, the creation of the website, the collaboration between the classroom instructor and the business librarian, and the effects of the website on the quality and quantity of the ESL students' research.  相似文献

Coordinated efforts between the librarian and the composition instructor should produce more productive research and more informed writing. The journal, a proven composition tool, is one technique that can be brought into the library instruction session. On a cognitive level, the use of a research journal helps students think through what they are planning, doing, and learning, and helps them think about and question the actual process of research. On a practical level, a research journal helps students become more organized and provides a place for dialogue between the librarian, the composition instructor, and the student.  相似文献

Many students assigned independent research investigations as class projects do not recognize the role that library research plays in project development. They often have trouble applying their basic library skills to a more sophisticated review of the literature and relating their own survey data to published research. In order to coordinate research guidance for a senior-level class at the University of Delaware, a library instruction session was expanded into a program of continuous faculty-librarian support for students completing the class project. A flow chart of project steps was modified successfully to include opportunities for instructor and librarian consultations and checkpoints for problem identification.  相似文献

Over the post five to ten years, company and industry information has been packaged and repackaged into a vast number of sources and formats. Undergraduate students consulting business sources in their library frequently become lost or confused because they are not familiar with the sources, nor do they understand how the sources interrelate and complement each other. How does a student develop a context for using business sources? Reference and instruction librarians can help students develop a framework by incorporating three key concepts into their encounters with students. This article presents an approach that reference and instruction librarians who work in environments where they answer questions related to all disciplines and who possess limited knowledge of business sources can use to help students develop a framework for classifying and using business information sources.  相似文献

Faculty Liaison:
《The Reference Librarian》2013,54(51-52):161-169
This case study describes a cooperative venture between a progressive faculty member and two librarians. The venture began as an experiment to introduce students to the kinds of external information sources they would likely encounter in the business world, to aid in strategic planning and to achieve (or maintain) a competitive edge. It was a revelation to some students that many of the same information sources available in their library are precisely those used in the corporate world. The session was team taught in a classroom using a mobile instruction unit, and included a discussion of various external information sources, their format and scope, followed by a CD-ROM demonstration (focusing on search strategies). Questions were encouraged throughout the period. In, addition, "lab" sessions in the library featuring a hands-on CD-ROM session and the demonstration of an online search (using DATA-STAR) were scheduled for those students unfamiliar with these information sources. The venture proved successful and was repeated.  相似文献

This article details how librarians can create discipline-specific, one-shot sessions that go beyond general bibliographic instruction when teaching outside their own academic backgrounds. This approach asks librarians to center their knowledge seeking and instructional planning within the situated information literacy (IL) process by investigating a liaison area's epistemology, metanarrative, and methodology, in essence, its essential components. This article demonstrates how the situated IL process was applied to learn about social work as a discipline and create more effective and discipline-specific library instruction sessions. Observations during the sessions and instructor feedback afterward demonstrated that an application of this process resulted in sessions that met instructor objectives and better reflected the research processes used in social work. To provide context and transferability, this article discusses the challenges in applying this process and includes practical examples of learning outcomes, instructional materials, and assessment options.  相似文献

This exploratory case study considers the analysis of works cited lists as a method for measuring the impact of business librarian research consultations in the context of a business-plan simulation assignment. In a gateway business class consisting of five concurrent sections in a single academic semester, 319 students received a librarian-led information and research lecture. An experimental subset of the group received an additional, personalized librarian consultation session that reinforced information concepts and research strategies with a focus on students' individual business plans.  相似文献

This paper highlights the design and development process that two academic business librarians employed to create an online toolkit of eLearning supports for business students. After receiving funding from their institution’s internal teaching innovation fund, they hired and worked with two eLearning design companies to produce the toolkit. The toolkit includes videos and PDF resources that show students how to retrieve specialized resources for key business research tasks. The librarians undertook this project to increase the online business information literacy offerings at their university and better support their institution’s diverse commuter, distance, and part-time student population. To develop a student-centered toolkit, the librarians used a curriculum mapping exercise, online surveying, focus groups, usability tests, and a student review group. They also adapted the ADDIE instructional design model and consulted adult learning theory to develop a series of micro-learning supports that were relevant and useful for undergraduate and graduate business students.  相似文献

This case study presents the revision of an upper-division one-shot instruction session to include an online tutorial that introduces students to business information sources prior to the library session. In order to complete the assignment and prepare for the library session, students are prompted to find specific information using the given resource, and then consider questions regarding the information retrieved. Students in a 3000-level business writing class responded positively to the activity while providing a good amount of material to inform further iterations of the assignment.  相似文献

There are different types of questions that can be used to determine whether students learned what they were taught in an information literacy (IL) session. This article summarizes best practices from the education literature for constructing short-answer, alternative-response, matching, multiple-choice, interpretative, and essay questions, as well as includes question examples from the author’s own experience delivering IL instruction.  相似文献

In tough economic times, growing a business may seem like a daunting prospect. However, it is possible for entities to grow the value of their businesses while navigating a difficult economic period. This article examines the processes used to value a business enterprise and the factors which contribute to an entity’s value. It then suggests ways for a publishing company to increase its value.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to identify the nagging behaviors college students report using with their instructors. One hundred and forty-four participants described instances in which they nagged instructors or instances in which they observed others nagging instructors. Students identified eight strategies for nagging instructors: the elicit student support nag, the demonstrate frustration with instructor nag, the strike a deal nag, the challenge instructor authority nag, the elicit sympathy nag, the suggest instructor incompetence nag, the flatter instructor nag, and the barrage instructor with requests nag.  相似文献

During the spring 2007 semester, a large cohort of undergraduates enrolled in the BUS110 course offered through the Stony Brook University College of Business. The business librarian and other library instruction librarians provided single library sessions to all sections of the course. Toward the end of the 1-hour library information session, the students were asked to fill out an online user satisfaction survey to assess how much they had learned and to evaluate the teaching tools and methodology of the librarians. Toward the end of the semester the business librarian posted a follow up survey to the BUS110 Blackboard site to assess whether the students had used the resources demonstrated by the librarians in the library session, whether they had had follow-up interactions with the librarians, and whether they had positive attitudes toward the library, librarians, and business databases. The majority of students had used the databases and had a positive attitude toward the instruction and the library.  相似文献

Abstract

This article examines how and why intranets developed and how they can be used as strategic business tools that empower an organization to meet its corporate vision. The discussion includes a case study that explores how Booz.Allen & Hamilton (BA&H), an international management and technology consulting firm, developed and implemented its own pioneering intranet, Knowledge On-Line (KOL). Practical lessons learned during this experience are offered as guidelines for other organizations planning to develop their own intranets.  相似文献

This paper describes methods of organizing the study of the information requirements of clients as a business process for a company that monitors and analyzes mass media. The modeling of these requirements is seen as an instrument for increasing the loyalty of clients and as a method for optimizing the final product of a company to the individual requirements of the consumer.  相似文献

This qualitative study was designed to provide insight into the responses of undergraduate business students to a survey item about the adequacy of library resources. Interviews with seven business majors revealed that students were not aware of the information resources available to them and that they found library resources overwhelming and confusing. The findings of this study did not reveal that additional business information resources should be provided to support students, but the study did yield useful information about what influences undergraduate business students' perceptions of and expectations about the information resources provided by the library. The article includes recommendations for increasing students' awareness of specialized business databases and improving students' perception that the content of these databases is useful for their coursework.  相似文献

This study examines the Super e-Book Consortium in Taiwan and Hong Kong by employing Activity Based Costing Method (ABC), which seeks to establish an activity and process analysis pattern for costing structure, and tries to find cost drivers for consortia business operation. The actual level of activities and the services provided by consortium have not been clearly identified. The service charges incurred for financing the consortium business operations are not commonly found in the expenditure category of their existing operating budgets. The key activities and relevant costs have been analyzed to provide a reference for pricing the service charges and as a benchmark for the future consortium operations in terms of cost reductions and efficiency improvements. A future inter-jurisdiction organizational business model is recommended based on key consortium operational activities and its changing environment.  相似文献

The library literature contains many discussions on problem-based learning as a means of engaging students in instruction and promoting information literacy. A related but relatively unexplored opportunity is available through client-based projects. Using examples from the business education literature, library literature, and the author's experience, the author attempts to connect the consulting processes of client-based projects to information literacy competencies, specifically, the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. The correspondence in the steps reveals exceptional opportunities for librarians to simultaneously apply what they already know, stretch their own boundaries, and promote information literacy in highly-motivated students.  相似文献
