Evidence-Based Acquisition (EBA) is a monograph-purchasing model in which a library licenses access to a large corpus of ebooks for a set period of time (typically a year). At the end of the term, the library acquires a number of permanent titles with a set dollar amount. Much has been published about choosing an EBA provider, with the focus primarily on usage during the full-access period. Little has been written about the decision-making process for permanent access monograph purchase. Our analysis of usage data at J. Paul Leonard Library has shown that year-to-year usage of monographs in an EBA program fluctuates markedly, so usage during one year is not a strong indicator of long-term value. Other factors are worth considering. This case report will document the library's overall EBA efforts and the development of a system whereby selectors advised on the purchase of ebooks in five different EBA programs, and the criteria they used in their selection.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Librarians at the Arnold Bernhard Library of Quinnipiac University were concerned with the usage levels of their electronic reference titles. They added the titles to the library's Web page, made individual records in the online catalog, and even established links between an OPAC keyword search and a search through electronic reference titles. It was still felt that the collection was underutilized. In 2007, the Automation Librarian began a project to add one more level of access to these titles—a graphic interface that simulated the process of walking into a reference room and picking out a title. A preliminary version was loaded in the Fall of 2007, and early results indicate that it has found an audience.  相似文献

Abstract

Diversity literary awards and other sources were used to create a list of high-quality titles written by and about underrepresented groups. This list was used to assess the diversity and inclusiveness of the library collections of a land-grant university in the Pacific Northwest and compare it to peer institutions. Gaps in the collection and acquisition processes were identified and will be used to improve the processes to increase the number of diverse titles added to the library’s collections.  相似文献

Librarians at the Arnold Bernhard Library of Quinnipiac University were at a crossroads with electronic reference books. At first they had added the titles to the library's web page, generated records to individual titles in the online catalog, and even established links to their content using the link resolver in the online catalog. It was still felt that the collection was not living up to its potential. In 2007, the automation librarian began a project to add one more level of access to these titles – a graphic interface that simulated the process of walking into a reference room and picking out a title – all of this done with no programming beyond basic HTML. Early usage reports beginning in the Fall of 2007 prove that the concept has found an audience.  相似文献

This study in an academic medical sciences library setting examines the correlation of usage of a matched set of print and online titles, the validity of e-journals usage statistics and the impact of online journals on print journal usage. The print and online usage was determined for 270 journals, both versions of which were available. Print usage was determined annually since 1997 using the reshelving and the error-copies method. Online usage statistics were delivered by five publishers and corrected for redundant multiple accesses. Print journal usage decreased by 22.3 and 30.2% respectively over each of 2 years after the introduction of online journals. Journals published both in print and online lost 30.4% of their print usage within 2 years. The total loss of usage of print-only titles in the same period was somewhat higher, at 45.8%. The average correlation between online and print usage is 0.60 and 0.67 respectively. For the examined titles, users accessed the online versions ten times as often as the print version. Two clearly distinguishable groupings emerged: while with Academic Press and Elsevier, e-journal usage exceeded print usage by a factor of 3 or 4, the e-journals of Blackwell, HighWire and Springer were used on average 14.6 times as frequently as the corresponding print journals. Each usage of a print article cost 2.79-50.82 Euro, each usage of an online article 0.31-15.10 Euro, depending on the publisher. On average, the usage of an online article was 5.4 times cheaper. Within 2-3 years the usage of online journals has outstripped that of print titles by a factor of ten, but the specific spectrum of usage remains much the same as when only print journals alone existed. Print titles not available online suffer a greater decline in usage compared with print/online journals. This confirms that what is read or purchased is determined primarily by ease of access and that there is a steady tendency to reduce the multiplicity of access modes to a manageable few. The availability of journals online seems to have created a new clientele, at least in the case of the German-language Springer journals. The connection between supplier and supply is much less clear with e-journals than it is with print titles. Therefore it is very important to stress and encourage the role of the library as the supplier of this sort of information in the university environment. Collection building issues are discussed in the light of the results.  相似文献

Creating up-to-date listings of electronic journals is challenging due to frequent changes in titles available and in URLs for electronic journal titles. However, many library users may want to browse web pages which contain listings of electronic journals arranged by title and/or academic disciplines. This case study examines the development of a system which automatically exports data from the online catalog and incorporates it into dynamically-generated web sites. These sites provide multiple access points for journals, include web-based interfaces enabling subject specialists to manage the list of titles which appears in their subject area. Because data are automatically extracted from the catalog, overlap in updating titles and URLs is avoided. Following the creation of this system, usage of electronic journals dramatically increased and feedback has been positive. Future challenges include developing more frequent updates and motivating subject specialists to more regularly monitor new titles.  相似文献

This article examines how consortia can engage commercial publishers' hybrid open access (OA) publication programs. The article argues that it is appropriate and necessary for consortia to demonstrate leadership in influencing the information marketplace. Two models for negotiations are examined: 1) “market determinative” strategy, and 2) “consortium discount” strategy, comprised of three variations on existing consortia practices. An examination of the advantages and challenges indicates that the latter would have a greater chance for success. Keys to this conclusion include: establishing linkages between consortium licensing and hybrid titles, cost containment/alignment, and engaging publishers through an integrated model approach.  相似文献

Providing access to periodicals holdings simply and efficiently has, historically, presented problems at Old Dominion University’s (ODU) Perry Library for a number of reasons. The availability of a large number of online journal titles from aggregators and the need to support remote access to these resources led to the Perry Library’s developing a comprehensive online periodicals database of print and online titles. This online system uses the Perl computer language and the MySQL relational database system.  相似文献

This is the ninth annual price study based on the "Basic List of Veterinary Medical Serials, 2nd edition." The basic list consists of three parts: core veterinary titles; an adjunct list of serials in biomedical and life sciences; and a list of relevant abstract and index titles. Prices are supplied by The Faxon Company. The indexing base is 1983. In the twelve year period from 1983-1994 the average price of titles in the core + adjunct lists rose from $100.37 to $305.69. The price index rose 204.55 percentage points, an average increase per year of 18.60%. The average price of litles in the core list rose from $69.07 to $205.82. The price index in his category rose 197.97 percentage points, an average of 18% per year. The average price of the 85 titles on the adjunct core list was $131.30 in 1983 and $404.39 in 1994. The price index in this category rose 207.98 percentage points, an average of 18.91 % per year. The 22 selected abstract and index titles in his same twelve year period increased in average price from $618.74 to $1,465.50. The index in this category rose 136.85% for an average annual increase of only 12.44%, considerably less than the other lists.  相似文献

Summary

The Committee on Inter-institutional Cooperation (CIC) is an academic consortium of thirteen large research institutions in the midwest with its own regional network, CICNet. The CIC libraries and CICNet are building a managed electronic journal collection out of the content and collection experience of the CICNet E_Serials Archive-a collection of over 800 freely distributed electronic serials. The libraries have developed and endorsed a broad collecting policy for the new collection, the CIC Libraries Electronic Journal Collection (CIC EJC). CIC Librarians are selecting a complete, authoritative and permanent collection of electronic journals to be shared by the CIC libraries. The collection will be actively managed, cataloged and maintained by CIC libraries and CICNet staff. Some titles from the E-Serials Archive are being selected for the EJC, and many new journals are being included as well. Cataiogers from six CIC institutions are creating bibliographic records for each selected title. The records will be entered into OCLC and made available to each CIC library's online catalog. This paper focuses on the specific problems encountered in creating the managed collection: locating all issues of each title, cataloging the collection, providing access and managing the collection as a long-term cooperative resource for all the CIC-libraries, and making it accessible to the scholarly research community at large.  相似文献

Abstract

Using the BUBL Journals service as a rich source of data, this article outlines different methods of measuring usage of electronic journals, suggests that different types of access may be mapped to the user activities of browsing, reading and searching, and draws some inferences about why different titles have differing patterns of usage. It also proposes that by measuring the ‘search-to-browse’ ratio of a journal it is possible to assess whether journals are being used primarily for research and reference purposes or mainly for current awareness and casual browsing.  相似文献

University College Dublin became the first library in the Republic of Ireland to trial patron-driven acquisition (PDA) as a collection development tool in 2013. A total of 42% of UCD Library's book budget was allocated to the project, which included both electronic and print books. This article describes the twelve month project from the tender stage, through evaluation and selection of supplier, to the final money being spent. We analyze which disciplines spent the most money, and how usage of PDA titles compared to non-PDA orders placed in the same time period. Finally, we assess the impact of PDA on the library's workflow.  相似文献

In 2005/2006, the authors evaluated cataloging and physical processing supplied through the University of Arkansas Libraries' shelf-ready contract with YBP Library Services and PromptCat. The authors examined 298 titles from three samples, with emphasis placed on series headings. Results showed that while 99.33% of titles received records and 99.66% of records received correctly matched their corresponding books, 27.05% of records exhibited errors affecting catalog access, and records for 38.59% of titles needed modification. Moreover, 32.11% of series headings required further attention to comply with local authority procedures. This study should prove useful to other libraries contemplating a shelf-ready contract and the level of quality control they wish to exercise.  相似文献
