AbstractThis article examines the motivations for the collaboration between the British Library and Library of Congress to develop a joint (Anglo-American) authority file. It describes the obstacles that had to be overcome for the British Library to become a Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) “copy holder”, or node. It considers the contribution the British Library made to NACO, the benefits it has derived from participation in Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), and concludes by looking ahead to the next 25?years. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This article illustrates the collaboration of three entities- the library, its online system and the authority service vendor-to achieve online authority control in a medium-sized academic library efficiently and cost-effectively. The authority service vendor checks and revises (as needed) the headings of the library's new bibliographic records, providing new authority records for them. Through a separate notification service, the vendor also provides revised authority records for the existing authority file, alerting the library when in-house online maintenance is needed. In this online environment, authority records and bibliographic records are maintained automatically by the vendor authority service. Thus, using various authority heading reports which can be generated by the local online system in conjunction with the notification service, the library concentrates its authority work on the elimination or correction of obsolete headings. The authority vendor services are effective and reduce the cost of maintaining the online catalog. Ultimately, accurate standardized headings enhance the ease and effectiveness of online searching and retrieval for all who consult the library's catalog. 相似文献

Abstract “Horizon” is the integrated library system marketed by Ameritech Library Services. The cataloging and authority control module of this system is a mixture of strengths and weaknesses. The MARC editor is inefficient for use in environments where high productivity is required but will be replaced with a significantly improved editor in the near future. Simultaneous import of MARC records by multiple users is problematic. Bibliographic headings are stored in the form of separate authority records, an approach that offers advantages but also presents significant problems. The flexibility of non-MARC edit forms is a major plus. 相似文献

Prior to planning for implementing the NOTIS system, the Vanderbilt Medical Center Library had not fully cataloged its government publications, and records for these materials were not in machine-readable format. A decision was made that patrons should need to look in only one place for all library materials, including the Health and Human Services Department publications received each year from the central library's Government Documents Unit. Beginning in 1985, these publications were added to the library's database, and the entire 7,200-piece collection is now in the online catalog. Working with these publications has taught the library much about the advantages and disadvantages of cataloging government documents in an online environment. It was found that OCLC cataloging copy is eventually available for most titles, although only about 10% of the records have MeSH headings. Staff time is the major expenditure; problems are caused by documents' irregular nature, frequent format changes, and difficult authority work. Since their addition to the online catalog, documents are used more and the library has better control. 相似文献

In 2005/2006, the authors evaluated cataloging and physical processing supplied through the University of Arkansas Libraries' shelf-ready contract with YBP Library Services and PromptCat. The authors examined 298 titles from three samples, with emphasis placed on series headings. Results showed that while 99.33% of titles received records and 99.66% of records received correctly matched their corresponding books, 27.05% of records exhibited errors affecting catalog access, and records for 38.59% of titles needed modification. Moreover, 32.11% of series headings required further attention to comply with local authority procedures. This study should prove useful to other libraries contemplating a shelf-ready contract and the level of quality control they wish to exercise. 相似文献

The 2005 revision of Library Congress Rule Interpretation 22.17, allowing the addition of death dates to personal name headings with open dates, had a significant impact on the maintenance of bibliographic records. The decision not to include open date forms as “see from” fields in revised authority records destined catalog maintenance staff to higher levels of manual review and editing. At Kent State University this prompted a search for better options and resulted in the creation of a shadow authority file intended solely for automated “flipping” of open date headings to the new forms. AbstractThe researchers extracted a disproportionate stratified random sample from 40?years of thesis bibliographic records at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. Match rates for thesis authors in the LC/NACO Name Authority File and in Canadiana Authorities were examined. ProQuest digitization of older theses, the creation of an institutional repository, the move to electronic theses and dissertations in 2011, and the implementation of vendor-assisted authority control in 2017 impacted bibliographic records. In addition to the dearth of matches in general, results uncovered false matches and significant changes to Library and Archives Canada thesis authority control practices over the years. 相似文献

At Vanderbilt University Library attempts to coordinate pre-order and pre-cataloging OCLC searching guidelines were only partially successful until the Verification Unit became part of the Monographic Services (i.e., cataloging) Department. With Verification's reporting to the head of cataloging and with the department head's more immediate awareness of verification procedures, closer coordination between verification and cataloging followed quickly. AbstractThe creation and the maintenance of three (name, title and subject headings) authority files in the Central Library of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, is discussed. The reasons for establishing bilingual (Greek and English) authority files are explained, and the necessary modifications of the AACR2 Rules, which were imperative for the establishment of bilingual headings in the authority files, are represented. In 2015, the Cataloging and Metadata Services department of Rice University's Fondren Library developed a process to reconcile four years of authority headings against an internally developed thesaurus. With a goal of immediate cleanup as well as an ongoing maintenance procedure, staff developed a “hack” of OpenRefine's normal Reconciliation function that ultimately yielded 99.6% authority reconciliation and a stable process for monthly data verification. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Adelphi University Libraries contracted to outsource copy cataloging and physical processing with Blackwell's Book Services in 1995. Since May 1996, 17,000 shelf-ready titles and over 16,000 catalog records have been received and loaded to our Innovative Interfaces OPAC. Costs, implementation, workflow, and benefits are discussed in this article. The outsourcing program, although hampered by staff shortages in the Libraries, has been highly successful in achieving enhanced cataloging and improved processing at reasonable costs. 相似文献

The assignment of subject headings to local theses and dissertations can be a time-consuming and costly activity in libraries where catalogers lack subject specialties. However, for many libraries subject analysis for theses and dissertations is a worthwhile task. At the Sterling C. Evans Library at Texas A&M University a program was instituted to remedy this situation by asking the student to suggest Library of Congress subject headings that accurately reflect the content of his or her work. This article reports the findings of an evaluation of this program and some considerations for its improvement. The authors believe that the use of such a program could speed the cataloging process as well as provide improved subject access to local theses and dissertations. 相似文献
