Librarians have been accused by both the political left and right of failing to acquire materials representing controversial views on social and political issues. Two bibliographies of monographs supporting conservative and liberal opinions are used to survey Ohio OCLC member libraries, searching for bias towards either side of the political spectrum. Conservative books appear more often in Ohio academic, public, and special libraries than do liberal titles. However, as books from either bibliography are in no more than 15% of all Ohio libraries, it appears the state's libraries have done a poor job in collecting controversial political materials. Further studies are needed to determine the extent, if any, of political bias among American libraries on collection development. 相似文献

The following bibliography is the first installment of an extensive bibliography of books, pamphlets, theses, dissertations, documents, addresses, unpublished mimeographed and other miscellaneous materials, and periodical articles on religious broadcasting. The years covered are from the dawn of American broadcasting up to the present. Of particular importance is the first section on “Sources of Bibliographical Information” on this subject. Because of the length of the entire bibliography, only the sections on sources, theses and dissertations, books and pamphlets, and unpublished and miscellaneous materials will be published in this issue of the Journal. The section on periodical articles will be published in a forthcoming issue. It is also intended to update the entire bibliography from time to time. The importance of religious broadcasting is well‐recognized by anyone who has ever completed the programming section of an FCC application form, or has ever examined the body of law that has ranged from the Scott and Schuler cases of yesterday to the Maclntyre case of today. Those readers who find this bibliography of interest might also wish to read FCC Commissioner Lee Loevinger's “Broadcasting and Religious Liberty” in the Winter 1964–65 issue of the Journal of Broadcasting. The major portion of this bibliography was compiled as a part of the author's Ph.D. dissertation, completed in 1965 in the Department of Speech of Michigan State University. Co‐chairmen of the guidance committee were Drs. Kenneth G. Hance of the Speech Department and Walter B. Emery of the Department of TV‐Radio. It has been updated and corrected to July 1965. These books include handbooks, such as Chase's Calendar of Annual Events, the Guinness Book of World Records, Famous First Facts, American Nicknames, Post's and . Vanderbilt's etiquette books, and Robert's Rules of Order. Dictionaries cited include A Table Alphabeticall (1604), Dictionarium Britannicum (1736), Webster's, Fowler's, the Acronyms and Initialisrns Dictionary, and the Abbreviations Dictionary. Amusing statements have been cited from Britannica from its first edition through reviews of the eleventh. Biographical works quoted include .the Dictionary of American Biography, Notable American Women, and Who's Who in America. Libraries provide readers' advisory services to young people to foster reading for pleasure. The Booktok community on TikTok is a resource that can be drawn upon to support promotion of books with this demographic. A hybrid content analysis of 116 TikTok videos explores presence of hashtags, authors and books, and recurring themes promoted in Booktok videos. Popular hashtags build community and promoted authors and books are a small and select group. Young people use Booktok to provide recommendations, explore reader experience and emotional response, generate reader community and identity, discuss fictional characters and places, develop and promote writing, and discuss personal library management and being a reader in the family. Libraries' reader advisory services for young people can use these findings to employ language of the discourse community for insider signposting of the library's physical space and give greater primacy to the emotional response evoked by books and reading. 相似文献

This study examines holdings of 21 members of the Association of Research Libraries for books reviewed in American Historical Review. The study asserts that approval plans are inadequate for collecting from small publishers or from scholarship that crosses disciplinary boundaries. Although approval plans increase efficiency in collection development, the need for expert selection cannot be overstated. Results indicated that small publisher's books were less likely to be in libraries than university press publisher's books, and that history monographs are frequently classified outside disciplinary boundaries, and are therefore invisible to approval plans that define disciplines based on classification systems. 相似文献

鸦片战争后,随着社会动荡的加剧,福建为数众多的私家藏书快速流落市场。清同治十一年至十三年,浙江著名藏书家陆心源在福建为官期间,开展了一系列访书、购书、借书活动,对闽中故家所藏宋元旧刻、精抄秘本搜访不遗余力,收获颇丰。论文采用文献研究法,通过梳理陆氏藏书目、书志、题跋及其他相关史料,对陆心源在闽期间的藏书事迹一一加以稽考,既是对陆心源生平研究的有益补充,也可藉此考察近代福建私家藏书聚散的历史事实。 相似文献
