ABSTRACT OCLC's ILL PRISM Transfer (IPT) is a method for transferring the data from an electronic interlibrary loan form to OCLC's ILL Review File. This article explains the IPT process and Olivet Nazarene University's IPT program development using HTML forms, C programming, and OCLC formatting. Summary This paper describes die OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc.s electronic publishing program between its introduction in 1992 through the late summer of 1997, focusing on OCLC's ongoing efforts to integrate electronic journals with library acquisition, cataloging, archiving, and online reference systems. The paper begins by describing the OCLC Electronic Journals Online (EJO) service, emphasizing how that service evolved to meet the changing needs of institutional subscribers to electronic journals between 1992 and 1995. It then describes the Electronic Collections Online service, a Web-bascd service introduced in June of 1997 that provides access to, and archiving for, hundreds of journals from many publishers. 相似文献

Summary Information from government sources is being added to the Internet at an ever-increasing rate. Catalogers at Penn State are working with AACR2, OCLC's Internet Cataloging Project (Inter-cat), and the creators of the Penn State Libraries' World Wide Web Home Page to include both Internet sites and electronic publications in the library's online catalog. OCLC's on-line services began in 1971, but only for monographic cataloging. It was 1974 when serials records were first allowed into OCLC's data base. Then came CONSER in 1975, serials check-in in 1976, and card production for serials cataloging in 1977. The University of Illinois at Urbann-Champaign (UIUC) has gradually increased its use of 0CLC's serials services for preorder searching, precatalog searching, and, most recently, full serials cataloging and card production. But UIUC has not committed itself to the use of OCLC for serials check-in or the planned acquisitions system. It will depend on the alternatives. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This report compares the features of the 2nd and 3rd editions of OCLC's CJK cataloging as implemented at the Chicago Public Library. The 3rd edition is faster for cataloging than the 2nd edition. Alternatively, the 2nd edition has other benefits including stability. Abstract Colorado State University-Pueblo, Interlibrary Loan Department has used Clio software for nearly seven years on a variety of network and client operating systems. The department has integrated Clio functions with WebZap and WebView electronic request and article delivery software, as well as the request features offered through OCLC's FirstSearch databases. An ongoing project is the interoperability of Clio-Request with the ILL request forms offered by the Ebsco databases. Originally purchased to automate copyright claiming, Clio has more than proven its flexibility and usefulness over the years. 相似文献

Objective: This study was undertaken in order to determine how health sciences libraries in a ten-state region are using Loansome Doc, with an emphasis on whether this tool continues to be used to serve unaffiliated health professionals. Methods: Usage data were examined and health sciences libraries were administered a survey to determine how they are using this tool. Results: Loansome Doc usage across libraries is low and declining, and a number of libraries do not serve unaffiliated health professionals with this tool. Conclusions: Use of Loansome Doc is low and declining, in part, due to license restrictions, declining interlibrary loan, and the prevalence of alternatives, such as OCLC's ILLiad, for document delivery to affiliated users. 相似文献

Abstract The use of the DDC in metadata offers unique opportunities for organizing and searching Web resources. In this paper, we describe CORC tools for applying and using the DDC as a metadata element. Both the CORC system and the DDC are benefiting from the inclusion of Dewey in the CORC project. CORC benefits from having integrated access to a rich classification system that can be used to organize its metadata; the DDC benefits from its inclusion in an easily adaptable Web-based system that facilitates the exploration of what a classification system can do in this new environment. 相似文献

Abstract Technology is rapidly moving libraries toward a self-service interlibrary loan model. Patrons currently request books and articles through OCLC's unmediated ILL Direct Request service, and interlibrary loan management software enables users to request, track, and renew borrowed materials unassisted online. In addition, products such as SFX and Serials Solutions further expand unmediated requesting. Peer-to-peer resource sharing defined by the ISO ILL Protocol and direct consortial borrowing, which has become possible following the recently approved NCIP standard, encourage and support the widespread development of self-service interlibrary loan. As borrowing from other collections becomes an almost effortless process for library users, reference librarians must find ways to encourage patron use of local collections, as well as familiarize themselves with the mechanics of unmediated interlibrary loan to better assist patrons in their use of evolving interlibrary loan technology. 相似文献

Abstract Health sciences libraries are expanding services that use online technologies to support teaching, research, and clinical care needs. Saint Louis University's Health Sciences Center (SLU HSC) Library has developed strong, user-centered, online services in interlibrary loan, bibliographic instruction, and electronic reserves. The authors present their successful experiences in using electronic technologies to improve library services. Journal articles are provided, often the same day as requested through interlibrary loan, and delivered in electronic format using OCLC's ILLiad program. First-year SLU medical students now complete a self-paced, all online, Health Information Resources course that targets the most relevant biomedical resources, reduces student study time, and is viewed as a model for the entire curriculum. ERes, the electronic reserves program, allows faculty to provide course materials that are accessible at the convenience of students 24 hours a day. These online programs are examples of using electronic technologies to better support user needs for excellent library services. 相似文献

This paper uses the literature to trace the history of OCLC's online Serials Control System (SCS), and it describes OCLC's plan to replace SCS with a stand-alone control system, SC350. Fifteen years of reports about SCS portray a system that never met all the needs of serials lbrarians. Reactions to replacement of SCS by SC350 emphasize the problems a library encounters when it changes from one serials control system to another. When considering such a change, a library should take the opportunity to re-examine its serials control needs and plan accordingly. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Clio 1.2, the interlibrary loan records management software developed by Perkins and Associates, effectively tracks OCLC ILL transactions for both borrowing and lending. Clio is equipped to report statistical information, which it gathers as the user initiates or receives OCLC, ALA and fax requests. Interacting with OCLC's ILL Microenhancer for DOS and Windows, Clio 1.2 affords accurate and comprehensive information to its users and provides a number of access points to the database. Clio is another effective application software package that helps make the tracking of interlibrary requests manageable. Camino, a patron-initiated borrowing system, operates within the SCELC consortium made up of private academic libraries in California. OCLC's WorldCat Navigator Request Engine is the backbone of this service, because it works with all ILS systems and integrates with discovery layers and interlibrary loan. ABSTRACT In 2002, Texas A&M University (TAMU) Libraries obtained a National Level Enhance authorization for the OCLC visual materials format, allowing TAMU catalogers to upgrade records for video recordings in OCLC's WorldCat database at all encoding levels. This article presents examples of typical changes made by one cataloger to video recording records that were either enhanced or upgraded to full-level at TAMU during the last five years. Common changes included: correcting information in the title and statement of responsibility, correcting date information, adding or correcting information in notes, and creating access points. Abstract The WLN Conspectus determines a library's acquisition commitment (growth rate) by considering what percentage of book publishing output it acquired. In 2000, the Bowker Annual changed its source of book publishing from the American Book Publishing Record to Books in Printwith an attendant increase in recorded output. That increase has serious implications for libraries using the WLN formula to determine collecting levels. The recent Art assessment at Jacksonville State University demonstrates how Bowker's change in book title output affects the library's acquisition commitment level, and what adjustments the library made to maintain consistency and continuity. 相似文献
