The medical librarian who keeps up with the latest medical news is a valuable resource for all health professionals. The following is a compilation of sites for medical news available on the Web. The sites are limited to those that do not charge a fee and that direct the user immediately to top health stories, as opposed to requiring the use of a search feature. The Computers and Medical Information elective is a collaborative effort to expose students to a variety of computer applications for medical information management. The course has a modular format so that students can work with a variety of people who are enthusiastic users of computer-based information systems. The elective emphasizes learning by doing. Faculty introduce concepts and systems and serve as guides in the use of systems. A library should review carefully the complex implications before undertaking to be a Regional Medical Library. Eight important considerations are examined: Possible conflict of interest between local, defined clientele and larger regional clientele; Indirect costs, especially as they relate to administrative and management time; Possible abuse of unlimited cost-free copy service; Region-wide participation in planning efforts; The hazard of depressing the quality of the rank and file of local libraries; Balance between private and public support--the risk of diminished dues support for library extension services; Complexities of territory definition; and Defining the proper recipient (the "qualified individual") of regional library service.
