Logistic regression has recently been advanced as a viable procedure for detecting differential item functioning (DIF). One of the advantages of this procedure is the considerable flexibility it offers in the specification of the regression equation. This article describes incorporating two ability estimates into a single regression analysis, with the result that substantially fewer items exhibit DIF. A comparable analysis is conducted using the Mantel-Haenszel with similar results. It is argued that by simultaneously conditioning on two relevant ability estimates, more accurate matching of examinees in the reference and focal groups is obtained, and thus multidimensional item impact is not mistakenly identified as DIF. 相似文献

Hypolipidemic effect of the water extract of the bark ofFicus bengalensis was investigated in alloxan induced diabetes mellitus in rabbits. Treatment for one month (50 mg/kg body weight/day) brought down the level of total serum cholesterol (TC) in subdiabetic and diabetic rabbits (five in each group) from 82±11 mg% and 118±10.6 mg% to 42.7±3.1 mg% and 51.7±4.7 mg% respectively. Low density lipoprotein cholesterol and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol values came down from 34±10 mg% and 95±24 mg% to 16±3 mg% and 29±4 mg% in subdiabetic and diabetic rabbits. Triacylglycerol level before treatment was 121±21.6 mg% and 416±70 mg% in subdiabetic and diabetic rabbits. Treatment brought it down to 45±5 mg% and 81±27.5 mg%. Glycosylated hemoglobin was brought down from 2.1±0.3% to 1.5±0.1% in subdiabetic group and from 4.28±0.5% to 2±0.3% in diabetic group, indicating that treatment with water extract effectively controlled blood sugar. After treatment with water extract serum lipid values were nearly equal to those in healthy controls (normal) in subdiabetic rabbits, while in diabetic group, the values were only slightly above those of normal. 相似文献

Cerebrospinal fluid protein estimation is a routine diagnostic tool for various diseases. The proposed modified bromocresol
green (BCG) method is applicable to automated as well as manual measurements. Protein concentrations and absorbance at 600
nm are linearly related throughout a wide range of concentrations from 10 mg % to 2000 mg %. Ninety C.S.F. samples were analyzed
and results obtained by both the modified BCG method and routine pyrogallol red method were compared. An excellent co-relation

Defective sperm function is the most common cause of infertility. A prospective study was carried out to correlate the concentration
of nitrite (the stable metabolite of nitric oxide) in seminal plasma with leukocytospermia, and sperm membrane integrity.
Total Fifty-seven normozoospermic subjects with and without leukocytospermia visiting the Infertility clinic at KH and MRC,
Karad, were included in the present study. Semen samples were checked for sperm concentration, total sperm count, sperm motility,
seminal leukocyte concentration and sperm membrane integrity as Hypoosmotic Swelling Test. Similarly the concentration of
nitrite in seminal plasma was measured by Griess reaction and total antioxidant power measured as ferric reducing ability
of plasma. The concentration of nitrite in seminal plasma was found to be raised with significantly increased leukocyte concentration
in semen. Also significantly lowered levels of total antioxidant power along with defective sperm function was observed. Our
results suggest that supplementary treatment of antioxidants with antibiotic for leukocytospermic infertile male patients
may improve the sperm membrane integrity. 相似文献

Coronary Artery Disease is the major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Traditional risk factors account for only
half of the morbidity and mortality from coronary artery disease. There is substantial evidence that oxidative stress plays
the major role in the atherosclerotic process. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the level of lipid peroxidation
(by measuring malondialdehyde) and antioxidant enzymes (ceruloplasmin, glutathione, superoxide dismutase) in coronary artery
disease. Serum malondialdehyde levels and serum ceruloplasmin levels were significantly raised in all the subgroups of study
group as compared to control group (p<0.001). Whole blood glutathione levels and hemolysate superoxide dismutase activity
was significantly decreased in all the subgroups of study group as compared to control group (p<0.001). Above results suggests
that the patients of coronary artery disease show increased oxidative stress and decreased levels of antioxidant enzymes.
So it is recommended that the management protocol for coronary artery disease patients should include antioxidant supplementation
along with simultaneous lowering of lipid peroxidation. 相似文献

The present study was undertaken to determine the significance of sex hormone binding globulin, the major and specific binding
protein for testosterone and estradiol, in breast cancer. Among breast cancer patients, lower serum levels of Sex hormone
binding globulin and higher levels of testosterone were observed. Sex hormone binding globulin showed an inverse relationship
with testosterone and total cholesterol, and a direct relation with HDL-cholesterol. By the western blot analyses, Sex hormone
binding globulin was detected in all biological samples that we examined. In the breast tumor tissue sections, immuno-staining
for Sex hormone binding globulin was confined in cell cytoplasm and 29% cases were positive, which showed no association with
the investigated prognostic markers of breast cancer such as ER and HER-2/neu over-expression. In this study, decreased circulating
levels of Sex hormone binding globulin in breast cancer patients possibly indicate higher bioavailable estrogens. 相似文献

Similes require two different pragmatic skills: appreciating the intended similarity and deriving a scalar implicature (e.g., “Lucy is like a parrot” normally implies that Lucy is not a parrot), but previous studies overlooked this second skill. In Experiment 1, preschoolers (N = 48; ages 3–5) understood “X is like a Y” as an expression of similarity. In Experiment 2 (N = 99; ages 3–6, 13) and Experiment 3 (N = 201; ages 3–5 and adults), participants received metaphors (“Lucy is a parrot”) or similes (“Lucy is like a parrot”) as clues to select one of three images (a parrot, a girl or a parrot-looking girl). Debye won the 1936 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to molecular structure, dipole moment relationship and for
diffraction of X-rays and electrons. Electrochemists, however, remember him for the Debye-Hückel limiting law that describes
the behavior of strong electrolytes. In explaining the non-ideal behavior of strong electrolytes, his mathematical treatment
