Imitation and Variation: Reflections on toddlers' strategies for learning   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The process of learning for young children is primarily a question of learning in the present and being able to utilize that which is learned in totally new settings or situations in the future. In this article we will illustrate how learning is a question of developing an understanding of, or creating ways of experiencing, aspects or phenomena of the surrounding world. Imitation is an important ingress into learning for young children. Additionally, variation provides insight into the cognitive world of very young children. Both imitation and variation are interwoven in the strategies for learning used by children. Two observations and analyses are presented. In the first observation a toddler attempts to master a skill and in the second observation a group of children are playing on a slide.  相似文献

This paper introduces a new scale to measure the life quality of people with an intellectual disability. The Comprehensive Quality of Life Scale‐‐Intellectual Disability incorporates features that reflect contemporary understanding of the quality of life construct and exists in a parallel form for the general population. Psychometric data are presented and comparisons are made between data collected from 59 people with an intellectual disability, the vicarious responses of each respondent's primary caregiver, and 69 university students. It is concluded that the scale represents a useful instrument to measure comparative life quality.  相似文献

We provide insight into how multiple visual strategies can be used simultaneously to increase access to and success with challenging mathematics at the secondary level for students with learning disabilities. Drawing on a teaching philosophy based on recognising student strengths and needs, we argue the potential benefits of using visual strategies during instruction and intervention to best meet student needs. Examples from our work with a high school student with a learning disability are presented to provide insight into how visual strategies can increase understanding and success with mathematics as it becomes more abstract at the secondary level. We urge practitioners and researchers to explore the benefits of incorporating simultaneous visual strategies into secondary mathematics learning.  相似文献

Librarians located in a 560-bed, inner city academic medical center with 25,000?+ admissions per year planned and opened a Patient and Family Education Center (PFEC) in the lobby of a new patient care pavilion. A review of use in the first 19 months revealed that expected needs were being met while a variety of unexpected needs were identified. Ongoing use continues to be monitored by a detailed log of patron visits maintained by library staff. This article describes the evolution of the Patient and Family Education Center, outreach to the hospital community, and plans for the future.  相似文献

Children with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) increasingly participate in inclusive education. The present study reviewed studies of children with ASC for parents’ perceptions of aspects they believed contributed to inclusive mainstream school settings. Understanding the parental perspective on the facilitators for inclusion of their child with ASC in mainstream schools is likely to improve inclusive practice. Twenty-eight empirical articles revealed that parents perceived teachers as playing a vital role in the inclusion of their children with ASC. The school was considered important in creating an environment that enabled inclusion, particularly through positive peer relations, prevention of bullying and help from support staff. At the societal level, funding and legislative policies were considered important. By understanding these aspects, policy-makers, teachers, school administrators and therapists may better be able to address parents’ inclusion concerns and thereby develop strategies to improve inclusion in mainstream schools.  相似文献

Survey research from the larger cities of Argentina during the1960s and the 1980s demonstrates a consistent level of antagonismtoward the United States by at least a fifth of urban Argentines.Hostility increased when the United States sided against Argentinain the Malvinas (Falklands) War of 1982, but it declined from1983 to 1988 under the conciliatory policies adopted by thegovernments of Raúl Alfonsín and Ronald Reagan.Asking identical questions of urban residents in Brazil indicatesstrikingly similar patterns of attitude. Antagonism tends tofocus upon specific elements of United States government policyin Latin America, while little hostility is expressed towardthe people of the United States. In contrast to foreign policyinitiatives, elements of the culture, the political freedoms,and the economic and educational opportunities of the UnitedStates are clearly admired in Argentina.  相似文献

Shortly after the election of the new Western Australia (WA) Government in March 2017, the new Premier, Mark McGowan, announced the first round of Machinery of Government changes to the WA public sector. The structural changes were promoted as creating collaborative departments focused on whole-of-government objectives and for delivering services in a more efficient and effective way. Part of these changes was to move the State Records Office of Western Australia under the State Library of Western Australia. The Australian Society of Archivists Western Australia Branch Committee discusses this act and the implications for the independence of the State Records Office.  相似文献

Two measures of the quality of group care for infants and toddlers   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Two sets of quality measures of group care were used to assess their predictive power for two sets of measures of the development of infant and toddlers in group day care. One of the quality measures we investigated was the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS). We replicated the findings of Scarr, Eisenberg, & Dealer-Deckard (1994) which were that the total score of the ECERS represents a global index and that the 37 items making up the scale are redundant and could be shortened considerably without loss of the scale as a quality criterion of group care for young children. Neither Scarr, Eisenberg, and Dealer-Deckard (1994) nor our own Factor Analyses of the 37 items supported the a priori distinction of seven Subscales. However further findings indicate that regardless of the redundancy within ECERS, two Subscales, dealing mainly with adult-child, child-child and adult-adult interactions, predict the development of infants and toddlers, but only when the measures of development were based on participant observations of the children over a longer period of time and in the broad context of the natural daycare environment. None of the Subscales, nor the total ECERS predicted social development when it was based on precise time sampling observations, assessed by non participant observers, in interactions between a child and a specific caregiver. Such measures of development were well predicted in our study by caregiver behaviors assessed through Time Sampling Observations.  相似文献

This two-pronged study seeks to ascertain the research psychographic characteristics of a select group of nurse professoriate (n=37) in a comprehensive university in the Philippines. The quantitative part of the study had an adapted survey questionnaire, which profiled the demographic and psychographic characteristics of the respondents. Defining the qualitative aspect of the inquiry was an in-depth interview with five (5) of the respondents chosen purposively to triangulate the data yielded by the questionnaire. Data were treated statistically and interpretively to describe the phenomenon under inquiry. It is interesting to note that while the nurse professoriate had shown a positive attitude towards research, variables such as time constraints, lack of research knowledge, research support structure and motivation hinder them from doing research activities. Implications of the study to reculturing, restructuring and reformulating efforts in research are also discussed.  相似文献

Comparative studies describing the transition from higher education to work have often simplified the complex transition processes involved. In this paper we extend previous research by taking into account several steps that comprise labor market entry, e.g., recurrent education leading to more than one instance of labor market entry. By comparing Germany and the United States we also examine how the tertiary education systems influence these transitions via the mode of stratification (parallel tracks in Germany vs. consecutive tracks in the US), the coordination mechanism (state-controlled vs. market-based) and the degree of standardization in educational programs. In our empirical analyses using large-scale longitudinal survey data we find that transitions in the US are less standardized and regulated than in Germany. Furthermore, differences between students from lower- and higher-tier institutions are less marked than expected, both within and between the two countries.  相似文献
