Performance on a multiple-choice item in a public examination indicates that most students do not understand the principle of the bubble potometer and its limitations in measuring transpiration rate. Teaching strategies are suggested to overcome these problems by helping students to compare the bubble potometer with the weighing method, develop the concept of assumptions, and resolve cognitive conflicts. To rectify the alternative conception on the role of transpiration, an interactive activity is designed to guide students to expose their preconceptions, design investigations to test them and evaluate the validity of the original ideas. 相似文献

This article discusses the role of Selim S?rr? Tarcan in the emergence of physical education in Turkey, which was an important component of the modernisation project of the Republic. Selim S?rr? Tarcan was a devoted moderniser who contributed to this process with his works and ideas in the field of physical education, a political project for the creation of strong and healthy citizens of the newly established nation-state. To analyse his contribution, we first establish the longer historical context that allows us to understand the development of modern education as a tool for shaping young generations. Second, we will focus on portions of Selim S?rr? Jigsaw is a well‐known and frequently used technique in cooperative learning. As part of ongoing studies to develop the technique, this research concentrates on exploring its use with prospective elementary school teachers (PTs). In order to establish PTs' views regarding Jigsaw and its effective on their academic success a proficiency test and questionnaire were administered and observations were made. Eighty‐one PTs from the Elementary Education Department at Cukurova University attending a math teaching course (MTC) participated. Forty‐five of these participants were in the experimental group and 36 in the control group. Findings show that Jigsaw II had a positive effect (effect size = 1.06) on PTs' academic success as well as on their views regarding the technique itself. 相似文献

Because of the forced reductions in state activities that are observed worldwide as a result of the increasingly unrestricted growth of competition, national public institutions of education are under escalating pressure. Both in basic and in higher education, a creeping process of privatization is occurring, while more and more of the costs of education are being passed on to the citizen. This applies to both industrialized countries such as Germany, and to Turkey. The international dimension of this subversive process, which is also drastically affecting the prospects for academic research, is seldom critically addressed in eduational discourse. Instead, the field is dominated by a high-brow attitude to the globalization process which sees it as helping to promote world citizenship. 相似文献

A longitudinal study has been conducted to explore the impact of a new language policy for Hong Kong secondary schools on
science learning. According to this policy, only schools that recruit the best 25% of students can teach science in English,
the students' second language, while the other schools have to teach science in Chinese, the students' native language. The
study involved a student cohort of 100 schools starting from S1 for three years. The outcome of science learning is conceptualized
as consisting of students' achievement and self-concept in science. This paper reports the possible effects of English-medium
instruction (EMI) and Chinese-medium instruction (CMI) on students' self-concept in science, as measured by students' responses
to a questionnaire. Comparing with the CMI students, the EMI students showed higher self-concepts in Chinese, English and
Mathematics, but a lower self-concept in science. This finding suggests that the EMI students might experience greater learning
problems in science than in other subjects, probably because science learning involves abstract thinking and the mastery of
scientific terminology which make a high demand on language proficiency. The EMI students showed a greater interest in learning
science than the CMI students, indicating that they were more academically oriented. The EMI students, however, formed a lower
perceived self-competence in science than their CMI peers, despite that they performed better in the science achievement test
than many of the CMI students. This perception supports the view that using English for instruction may have negative effects
on science learning. It is also consistent with the observation that the EMI students perceived science as more difficult
to understand and learn than the CMI students. 相似文献
