Simulated data were used to demonstrate that groups formed by imposing cut-points based on either discrepancy or low-achievement definitions of learning disabilities (LD) are unstable over time. Similar problems were demonstrated in longitudinal data from the Connecticut Longitudinal Study, where 39% of the children designated as having LD in Grade 3 changed group placement with repeated testing in Grade 5. These results show that the practice of subdividing a normal distribution with arbitrary cut-points leads to instability in group membership. Approaches to the identification of children as having LD based solely on individual test scores not linked to specific behavioral criteria lead to invalid decisions about individual children. Low-achievement definitions are not a viable alternative to IQ-discrepancy definitions in the absence of other criteria, such as the traditional exclusions and response to quality intervention. If we accept the premise of multiple classes of low achievers, then we must develop identification systems that are valid and abandon systems whose only merits are their historical precedence and convenience. 相似文献

This paper reports on a small‐scale project which aimed to build upon the existing home literacy practices of a group of three‐ and four‐year‐old children living in the UK. The purpose of the project was to develop literacy materials and resources which could be borrowed from nursery and used within the home to promote children’s literacy development. Children’s informal literacy practices at home were identified using literacy diaries, which 18 families completed over a four‐week period. These documented children’s reading of both printed and televisual texts. In addition, interviews were conducted with 15 parents and carers. The paper reports on the findings from this stage of the project, which indicate that much of children’s reading was focused on popular cultural and media texts. Media boxes were developed as a literacy resource for use by parents and children in the home. In the March 1997 issue, Derek Law described the “Follet Program” which has provided finding and guided the development of digital library initiatives in the United Kingdom for several years now. This paper reports findings from a phenomenographic investigation into blended university teaching using virtual learning
environments (VLEs). Interviews with 25 Computer Science teachers in Greek universities illuminated a spectrum of teachers’
conceptions and approaches from ‘teacher-focused and content-oriented’, through ‘student-focused and content-oriented’, to
‘student-focused and process-oriented’. Using VLEs was described as a means of supporting: A—information transfer; B—application
and clarification of concepts; C—exchange and development of ideas, and resource exploration and sharing; D—collaborative
knowledge-creation, and development of process awareness and skills. The study suggests that pedagogical beliefs and circumstances
underpinning face-to-face teaching are more influential in shaping approaches to blended VLE use than VLE system features.
The authors propose that the findings could be used to inform educational enhancement initiatives and that there is a need

Expert-mediated literature searching, a keystone service in biomedical librarianship, would benefit significantly from regular methodical review. This article describes the novel use of Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) software to create a database of literature searches conducted at a large academic health sciences library. An archive of paper search requests was entered into REDCap, and librarians now prospectively enter records for current searches. Having search data readily available allows librarians to reuse search strategies and track their workload. In aggregate, this data can help guide practice and determine priorities by identifying users’ needs, tracking librarian effort, and focusing librarians’ continuing education. 相似文献
