An in vivo head impact dosimeter, termed the ??intelligent mouthguard??, is under development at the Cleveland Clinic. The intelligent mouthguard facilitates correlation of acute and accumulative impact dosage with injury risk. As part of intelligent mouthguard dosimetry development for boxing and mixed martial arts participants, head and neck impact dosage was quantified in the laboratory for seven (7) punch types. Impact dosage data for punches were collected, which generated unique ??fingerprints?? for use with the intelligent mouthguard computational algorithm. Additional calculations were made on parameters based on each punch ??fingerprint?? and injury risk. Each of the punches had a unique ??fingerprint??. The hook imparted the most severe impact dosage, with the cross and oblique hook inducing the next most severe impact dosages, respectively. The impact dosage ??fingerprints?? determined here will be used to identify punch types during intelligent mouthguard human trials in 2012. Intelligent mouthguard dosimetry will be available soon for other contact sports (American Football, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse) to monitor head?Cneck impact dosage for correlation to acute or accumulative injury risk. 相似文献

Hungarian born American chemist, George Andrew Olah was a prolific researcher. The central theme of his career was the pursuit of structure and mechanisms in chemistry, particularly focused on electron-deficient intermediates. He leaves behind a large body of work comprising almost 1500 papers and twenty books for the scientific community. Some selected works have been published in three aptly entitled volumes, Across Conventional Lines.There is no way to capture the many contributions of Olah in a short essay. Obesity is risk factor for insulin resistance, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. Adiponectin, an adipose-specific protein with antiatherogenic and antiinflammatory effects, were found to be associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and insulin resistance. Our aim to identify possible relationships between circulating adiponectin and obesity as well as obesity related phenotypes. A total of 642, obese and non-obese individuals were included in this cross-sectional study. Hormone and glucose levels were estimated using standard protocols. The adiponectin levels showed a significant decrease with increasing quartiles of insulin resistance index. Subjects in lowest quartile of adiponectin level had a significantly higher risk than those in the highest quartile, with higher body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, percentage body fat, fat mass, fasting insulin, insulin resistance index, total cholesterol (p < 0.001), low density lipoprotein–cholesterol (p = 0.001), very low density lipoprotein–cholesterol (p = 0.002), and Triglyceride (p = 0.002). The present study indicates that adiponectin is significantly associated with obesity, insulin resistance and other obesity related phenotypes. 相似文献

Oxidative stress has been found to play important role in several neuropsychiatric diseases including Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder. A longitudinal case control study was conducted to evaluate the oxidative stress in 30 newly diagnosed obsessive
compulsive disorder patients and same number of control patients. Serum thiobarbituric acid reacting substances, plasma ascorbate
were assessed to evaluate oxidative stress and Yale Brown obsessive compulsive scale for disease severity before and after
treatment with Fluoxetine at the average dosage of 40 mg/day. Improvement in Yale Brown obsessive compulsive scale score by
about 43% after 12 weeks treatment was associated with significantly decreased thiobarbituric acid reacting substances and
increased plasma ascorbate values (p < 0.05). The newly diagnosed obsessive compulsive disorder patients had higher serum
thiobarbituric acid reacting substances as well as a lower plasma ascorbate levels than the control population. Thus, the
present study suggested a significant role of oxidative stress in obsessive compulsive disorder and showed that a successful
treatment with Fluoxetine not only improves the clinical scenario but also reduces the oxidative stress that may further improve
the prognosis of the disease. 相似文献

Total thiol status of plasma, especially thiol groups over protein contributes maximum to the plasma antioxidant status of
the body. Serum protein thiols were found to be decreased in various disease conditions including chronic renal failure patients.
Only few studies determined the levels of urinary protein thiols in disease conditions. The current study was designed to
know the levels of urinary protein thiols in patients with different grades of proteinuria. The study was conducted on urine
of 40 healthy controls and 61 cases with proteinuria. Based on proteinuria cases were further divided into two groups; group
I - microproteinuria (150–300 mg protein/d), 32 cases, group II - frank proteinuria (>300 mg protein/d), 29 cases. Urinary
thiol levels were determined by spectrophotometric method using dithionitrobenzoic acid. A significant decrease (p<0.01) in
urinary thiol in group I and group II cases was observed in present study and this decrease was associated with proteinuria. 相似文献

Campus crisis management remains an understudied topic in the context of COVID-affected higher education. In this paper, we contrasted the ability to tame the wicked problems brought by the pandemic of COVID-19 in private and public universities in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Colombia, India, Kazakhstan, Uganda, and Ukraine. The cross-country analysis and diversity of institutional types allowed us to consider a wide range of challenges faced by academic leaders and their institutions during the global pandemic. By drawing on institutional policy reviews and interviews with university administrators, we have examined tensions between the human and institutional agencies on these crisis-stricken campuses given differing institutional coupling, sizes, resources, and missions. The focus on agential co-dependencies and institutional coupling lays the ground for conceptualizing campus crisis management as a culturally specific construct in the context of higher education affected by the global pandemic. 相似文献
