Indian and English Children's Understanding of the Distinction between Real and Apparent Emotion 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
24 preschool and 24 school-entry children in Bombay, India, and 24 preschool and 24 school-entry children in Oxford, England, were tested on their ability to distinguish between real and apparent emotion in response to stories involving child-adult and child-child interactions. Younger Indian girls did better than younger English girls, and the data reveal effects due to age, culture, gender, and story type which suggest a more social model of the understanding of emotion than has been proposed by other researchers using this methodology. 相似文献

This paper examines different understandings of gender equity and women's empowerment in two linked organisations, working in India to expand access and improve quality in primary education. Drawing on case study material from Bihar, the workings of two different, but linked programmes-the District Primary Education Programme and Mahila Samakhya (Women's Empowerment) are examined. The complementary achievements of the two organisations, representing different kinds of NGO, are highlighted. The paper concludes that social justice and educational transformation cannot be taken forward with only a single form of organisation, but the powerful interconnections of the two approaches are necessary. 相似文献

From private to public, from small to large, campus protests and demonstrations have risen across the country to address institutional racism regarding a range of issues including offensive Halloween costumes, university/college seals, lack of faculty color, and racist vandalism. One such example occurred at Southwest University where Native American students were protesting the university seal, which represents settler colonialism and genocide. In this article, we provide a case study of Joy, a Diné (Navajo) young woman, and describe her student activism in regards to the seal and how she utilizes it to connect to her culture, language, and identity. We utilize critical race theory (CRT) and tribal critical race theory (TribalCrit) to analyze the institutional microaggressions that Joy experienced on campus. Our main conclusions explain how student activism enables students to address systemic racism and provides a vehicle to create better conditions on university campuses. 相似文献

“For a biologist”, wrote Sir Peter Medawar, “the alternative to thinking in evolutionary terms is not to think at all”. Yet,
at the end of an education in biology in most Indian universities, this is not quite the view of evolutionary biology that
one is left with. Evolution is presented summarily, almost as a footnote, rather than as a vital branch of biology providing
the conceptual foundation for our modern views about the living world. In this issue ofResonance, we remember Stephen Jay Gould, who wrote extensively and eloquently about evolution for a general audience. It seems fitting,
then, to also briefly discuss why evolutionary biology is important, not only conceptually but also in terms of practical
applications. In this first part of a series of articles on modern evolutionary biology, we examine why the idea of evolution
is so important in our intellectual history, and also take a look at the domain of evolutionary biology as a discipline.
