Introducing computer literacy skills for physicians

Computers are integral to medical practice, education, and research. While medical students learn computer skills during their training, many practicing physicians do not have the same computer experience. To familiarize this group with the exciting developments in medical informatics, the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library and Department of Computer Medicine at the George Washington University Medical Center organized a workshop "Introducing Your Office Computer!" for attending physicians. The workshop featured a short lecture/video presentation on computer applications in medicine followed by a "computer fair" of five computer applications. Eleven physicians attended the workshop. Feedback was very positive; many called later to request more detailed instructions on using the programs demonstrated. It was a valuable experience for the staff, and new bridges were built between departments and clients.  相似文献   

The role of sports as a social status determinant for children.

This study was designed to examine children's attitudes toward the role of sports in determining social status, as well as the activities in which children prefer to participate. A total of 227 boys and 251 girls in Grades 4, 5, and 6 completed a questionnaire to determine which criteria were most important in determining personal, female, and male popularity. Personal popularity was answered by the girls and boys according to "what would make you well liked by your classmates." Female and male popularity was determined by asking both girls and boys to decide "what would make (girls, for female subjects, and boys, for male subjects) well liked by your classmates." A comparison of results from the Buchanan, Blankenbaker, and Cotten (1976) investigation and the present study indicated that, in the last 15 years, appearance has become more important and academic achievement less important in determining personal popularity for girls. For boys, the comparison revealed that sports have become more important and academic achievement less important in determining personal popularity. Boys reported sports to be the most important determinant of personal and male popularity and appearance as the most important determinant of female popularity. Sports and appearance became more important for boys with each higher grade level. Girls reported appearance to be the most important determinant of personal, male, and female popularity. For girls, appearance became more important with each higher grade level. A comparison of results from the Buchanan et al. Organizational change in the Medical Library Association: evolution of the continuing education program

"Change" is a critical dimension of contemporary experience. Library associations are not exempt, and they change in ways similar to other organizations. According to some authorities, four phases typify the process: diagnosis, design, implementation, and incorporation. Focusing on changes in the Medical Library Association's longstanding program of continuing education, the authors utilize the "phase framework" to chart that association's movement from a management system depending primarily upon volunteers to one in which professional staff figure prominently. The historical review serves a heuristic purpose for individuals and institutions in identifying characteristic features of the change process.  相似文献   

纸质档案绿色抑菌剂的筛选及应用研究

微生物防治是纸质档案保护的重要内容,但防治过程中对环境的污染和人体的危害一直困扰着档案保护工作者。本文选择绿色无危害抑菌剂对纸质档案进行实验,首先通过抑菌活性筛选出抑菌剂,其中接触型抑菌剂抑菌效果匹马霉素>PHMB>ε-PL>蒜氨酸,空间型抑菌剂抑菌效果香芹酚>香茅醛>2-苯乙醇;其次进行了联合抑菌实验,确定了PHMB（125mg/L）与匹马霉素（3.906mg/L）配伍的接触型抑菌剂、香芹酚（15.62mg/L）与香茅醛（31.25mg/L）配伍的空间型抑菌剂性能最好;最后对上述两组抑菌剂处理过的纸张进行安全性能检测,结果显示两种抑菌剂组合对纸张拉力无显著影响,但有显著的脱酸和抗老化效果,对处理后的纸张ΔE最大值不超过1.5。本研究为研制安全高效的纸质档案抑菌剂提供实践基础。  相似文献
