Mathematics pedagogical content knowledge (MPCK) of teachers cannot be easily defined but is a complex concept integrating generic pedagogical knowledge, mathematics teaching methodology as well as knowledge of the discipline of mathematics. It is the objective of mathematics methodology courses in teacher preparation programmes to begin the development of MPCK in their pre-service teachers. As part of a research study on the development of MPCK in primary school beginning teachers, a 16-item instrument was developed to measure some aspects of the MPCK for teaching mathematics at primary level. The instrument was administered to the 2003 Intake of the Diploma in Education student teachers at the National Institute of Education, Singapore just at the beginning of their programme. As they completed their methodology course in February 2005, the instrument was administered again. This paper will discuss the findings concerning their performance in these two tests, with reference to the overall performance as well as topic-specific and MPCK construct-specific performance. The findings indicate that student teachers at the beginning of their programmes are generally quite weak in their mathematics pedagogical content knowledge, as might be expected. There was significant improvement in some aspects of their MPCK on completion of their mathematics pedagogy course.  相似文献

Microfluidic blood plasma separation via bulk electrohydrodynamic flows   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
An effective mechanism for rapid and efficient microfluidic particle trapping and concentration is proposed without requiring any mechanically moving parts. When a voltage beyond the threshold atmospheric ionization value is applied on a sharp electrode tip mounted at an angle above a microfluidic liquid chamber, the bulk electrohydrodynamic air thrust that is generated results in interfacial shear and, hence, primary azimuthal liquid surface recirculation. This discharge driven vortex mechanism, in turn, causes a secondary bulk meridional liquid recirculation, which produces an inward radial force near the bottom of the chamber. Particles suspended in the liquid are then rapidly convected by the bulk recirculation toward the bottom, where the inward radial force causes them to spiral in a helical swirl-like fashion toward a stagnation point. In particular, we show that these flows, similar to Batchelor flows occurring in a cylindrical liquid column between a stationary and rotating disk, can be used for the separation of red blood cells from blood plasma in a miniaturized device.  相似文献

These two studies examined the processes underlying English and Chinese word reading in Chinese–English bilinguals in relation to their experiences with their second language (L2), as determined by length of time in an English-speaking environment. Phonological awareness, morphological awareness and vocabulary measures were administered in English and Chinese to adolescents and young adults living in Canada. The results show that similar word reading processes were used to read English and Chinese for the bilinguals who were recent immigrants and had less exposure to English. Specifically, vocabulary knowledge was directly related to English and Chinese word reading in the more recent immigrants. However, phonological awareness was not related to English word reading in this group. Conversely, reading processes in the two languages were less similar for participants who were long-term immigrants. In the long-term immigrant group, English reading was related to phonological awareness. The writing system of the first language (L1) exerted an influence on L2 reading and the degree of influence was related to language experience.  相似文献

Although the use of clickers and peer discussion is becoming common in large-lecture undergraduate biology courses, their use is limited in small-enrollment seminar-style courses. To investigate whether facilitating peer discussion with clickers would add value to a small-enrollment seminar-style course, we evaluated their usefulness in an 11-student Embryology course at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Student performance data, observations of peer discussion, and interviews with students revealed that adding clickers to a small-enrollment course 1) increases the chance students will do the required reading before class, 2) helps the instructor engage all students in the class, and 3) gives students a focused opportunity to share thinking and to learn from their peers.  相似文献

The introduction of problem-based learning into K-12 science classrooms faces the challenge of achieving the dual goal of learning science content and developing problem-solving skills. To overcome this content-process tension in science classrooms, we employed the knowledge-creation approach as a boundary object between the two seemingly contradicting activities: learning of science content and developing problem-solving skills. As part of a design research, we studied a group of Grade 9 students who were solving a problem related to the Law of Conservation of Energy. Through the lens of the activity theory, we found that students’ understanding of the intended science knowledge deepened as they made sense of the disciplinary-content knowledge in the context of the problem and concurrently, the students successfully developed solutions for the problem. This study shows that developing problem-solving competencies and content learning need not be disparate activities. On the contrary, we can harness the interdependency of these two activities to achieve dual goals in learning.  相似文献

Researchers who use tests developed in countries other than their own are faced with two fundamental problems. Firstly, some items in the test may have cultural-linguistic biases. Secondly, the reference group on which the foreign test norm has been established can be rather dissimilar to the local group if the same test is to be used. With the needs of experienced teachers potentially overshadowed by a focus on recruitment, the purpose of this study was to retrospectively explore the reasons why three experienced physical education teachers resigned. They were interviewed through Louis and Smith's (1990) quality of work life (QWL) model. Data suggested shared dissatisfactions related to the lack of “genuine” opportunities to participate in educational debate and decision making, and limited professional respect shown by administrators and parents. A physical education teacher's “use-by date” was proposed. Unless these issues are further explored and addressed, quality teachers will continue to abandon the service.  相似文献

The inaugural conference on Advances in Microfluidics and Nanofluidics was held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on 5–7 January 2009 and brought together leading researchers from across a wide variety of disciplines from North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. This Special Topic section forms the second of the two issues dedicated to original contributions covering both fundamental physicochemical aspects of microfluidics and nanofluidics as well as their applications to the miniaturization of chemical and biological systems that were presented at the conference.In the last five years, we have observed rapid growth in the microfluidics and nanofluidics community in Asia, owing largely to the substantial strategic investments by both government and industry in the region to promote the microfabrication and nanotechnology sectors.1 The organization of a regular meeting focusing on activities in the Asia-Pacific rim region was, therefore, timely, particularly to enhance dissemination of research of the highest quality within the region and to promote collaboration between researchers in the Asian community with their counterparts from Europe and the USA.Biomicrofluidics is, therefore, proud to be closely involved with the organization of the first of such conferences, Advances in Microfluidics and Nanofluidics 2009, which was kindly hosted by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). As reported in the preface to the first of the two issues dedicated to invited reviews and original contributions associated with the conference,2 the meeting, which took place over three days in the breathtaking HKUST campus overlooking Clearwater Bay in Hong Kong, was a tremendous success. Together with our colleagues, the Biomicrofluidics editors are busy putting in place arrangements for a follow-up meeting in January 2011. Given the overwhelming response and positive feedback we’ve had to date, we believe that Advances in Microfluidics and Nanofluidics will form a regular event in the calendar of the Asian microfluidics and nanofluidics community in the future.It was particularly pleasing to observe the translation of fundamental and theoretical work into advanced applied chip-based platforms for a variety of practical chemical and biological applications in the talks presented at the conference. The collection of articles in this second part, in fact, provides a gist of the flavor of the multidisciplinary research spanning the entire fundamental to applied research spectrum, which is exactly the scope which the journal intends to cover.Electrokinetics continues to be a dominant theme in this issue and within the microfluidics and nanofluidics community. The article by Ng et al.3 provides experimental evidence that might put to rest a longstanding area of debate within the electrokinetics community on the role of Faradaic charging in driving electro-osmotic flow, first proposed by Ben and Chang.4 In other electrokinetics papers, the role of interfaces is explored, for example, electrowetting on the superhydrophobic nanostructured surfaces of a lotus leaf5 and droplet manipulation in an immiscible dielectric liquid continuum under an electric field.6In addition, the characterization of the surface charge density of the nanopores etched in organic foils is reported by Xue et al.,7 which provides a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which ions are transported in nanochannels, whereas Wei and Hsiao8 present a stochastic simulation to model the condensation of linear polyelectrolyte molecules under electric fields, in which they show the marked increase in the mobility of the polyelectrolyte chain during its unfolding in free-solution electrophoresis.Continuing along the theme of numerical simulations, particulate transport in converging-diverging microchannels was studied using a Lagrangian-Eulerian finite-element model,9 and slip arising in Couette flows over superhydrophobic surfaces was studied using a hybrid multiscale simulation that interfaces molecular dynamics simulations in the near-wall region with the continuum fluid model in the bulk.10 In other numerical studies, drop coalescence11 and nanotube transport12 were studied.Complementing these fundamental studies is the use of multiphase flows in microfluidic channels to engineer scaffolds for tissue engineering in which the bubbles trapped in liquid droplets transported in microchannels were employed to produced the pores of the scaffold.13 Other practical microfluidics applications, such as chip-based enhancement of DNA hybridization through a genetic-bead-based protocol14 and an automated ELISA chip for chemical-biological analysis with an enhancement in the detection range and time,15 also constitute papers in this Special Topic section.We hope you enjoy reading the papers in this Special Topic section and that it provides you with a feel for the broad multidisciplinary spectrum across fundamental and applied microfluidic and nanofluidic research that the conference, as well as the journal, intends to span. The study investigates the actual genetic development of student teachers' interest in lectures given in a postgraduate language teacher education programme. Students recorded the nature and level of interest at various points of the lecture. The results show that students go through diverse patterns of interest trajectories and that, for the majority, interest development fluctuates between gain and loss. Four types of factors are proposed: triggering, holding, preventing and losing factors. The prospective and retrospective effects of these factors are also examined. For interest to be maintained over a longer period within a two‐hour lecture, students must experience a combination of factors. In case of regression, if students demonstrate awareness of the source or solution to the problem, the loss is temporary, tending to recover at the next interval. Some factors, such as use of tasks and interesting specific topics, also help regenerate interest after a loss of interest has occurred.  相似文献
