This paper is based on a recently completed three‐year research project undertaken with staff and students at one department of education studies in a university in England. We explored the reasons given by students for enrolling in a degree‐level programme in Educational Studies, reviewed their experiences and perceptions during their studies and made comments about career destinations. Only some of the findings that emerged from the project are reported here. Through a process of data collection undertaken in depth at one institution, and analysis in the context of literature and publicly available reports about similar work in other institutions, we illuminate some issues concerning the nature of degree programmes in Educational Studies. 相似文献

Of 2019 men and women (aged 15 years and over) interviewed as part of a MORI Survey of a nationally representative sample of Great Britain, 10% reported that they had been sexually abused before the age of 16 (12% of females; 8% of males). There was no increased risk associated with specific social class categories or area of residence. For all types of sexual abuse, the mean age of victims when first abused was significantly lower for females. Subjective reports of the effects of sexual abuse indicated that the majority (51%) felt harmed by the experience, while only 4% reported that it had improved the quality of their life. We estimate that there are over 4.5 million adults in Great Britain who were sexually abused as children, and that a potential 1,117,000 children will be sexually abused before they are 15 years of age. At least 143,000 of these will be abused within the family. The social and mental health implications are enormous, and the authors suggest that an effective intervention and prevention policy is urgently required. 相似文献

The importance of early childhood education has been recognised for a large number of years in Chile. This paper offers an overview of the history of the Chilean Education System and shows how many early childhood programmes have been developed since the first Froebel kindergarten was introduced in the early 1900s. Although many children under the age of six years are involved in municipal education programmes, other programmes offer support for families in need. Of particular interest is the ‘Sala Cuna’ or ‘crib room’ designed for the youngest children (those under two), the law in Chile requiring employers to make provide for the children of working mothers. Few family studies of delinquency have focused on siblings. We use a sibling research design to evaluate shared (i.e., family) and unshared environmental influences on delinquency. The 15-22-year-old adolescent siblings were nationally representative, and uniquely, in families of 2 to 4 siblings. No unshared family environmental influences were found for sisters and for mixed-sex siblings, but they may exist for brothers. The data suggested substantial shared environmental and/or shared genetic influences for siblings: the median sibling correlations, averaged over family sizes, were: brothers, r = .30; sisters, r = .28, and mixed sex, r = .21. 相似文献
