The role of testing in determining college admissions and the impact of that testing on high school students are commanding increasing attention. There is emerging evidence that admissions decisions made solely on the basis of high school record can serve the college as well or better than decisions based, at least in part, on scores obtained on admissions tests. Further, though there is a recognized need for guidance, the tests in current use for admission provide limited information for helping students in making course selections that would make the best use of their abilities. This article reviews an alternative, long neglected and little known, for testing at the high school-college interface that would meet this need. Testing to provide differential prediction of college performance, as proposed by Paul Horst, focuses on allowing students to make the best match between their achievements, interests, and goals with the undergraduate programs of study available to them.  相似文献

Motherhood is a complex experience that can be transformative, offering women opportunities for personal enrichment and spiritual development. Because the largest incidence of births occurs to women in the Millennial or late Generation X generations, this complex, potentially transformative experience occurs at a critical time in young adult women's identity development, making it both the content and context of their quest to live a meaningful and integrated life. In this article we introduce and explain a funding framework for advancing an equity agenda at the community college. The need for the framework is premised on (a) Dowd's observation that the traditional community college commitment to student access no longer suffices as an adequate strategy to achieve greater equity in society and (b) the recognition that community colleges are becoming more entrepreneurial as a result of challenges posed by privatization, state performance accountability systems, and marketization. A new approach to advancing equity is needed in this environment. We propose a funding framework that reflects lessons learned from a review of funding systems used in English further education systems and community college systems in Colorado and California.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Community college administrators face a dilemma in the implementation of placement policies regarding college algebra students. Extensive literature devoted to this subject has been generated in the last 100 years without consensus. Furthermore, faculty opinions of the current placement policies contribute to the presence of a discrepancy in the interpretation of placement models used in policy generation. Utilizing a statistically derived and analyzed model in conjunction with faculty and administrator interviews, a new interpretation of the results generated by placement models in terms of the type of prediction generated may assist in the generation of future placement policies. This new interpretation serves to resolve the discrepancy by redefining the capabilities of the statistical model within the context of the faculty and administrator views of current placement policy.  相似文献

Tandem cycling enables visually impaired athletes to compete in cycling in the Paralympics. Tandem aerodynamics can be analysed by track measurements, wind-tunnel experiments and numerical simulations with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). However, the proximity of the pilot (front) and the stoker (rear) and the associated strong aerodynamic interactions between both athletes present substantial challenges for CFD simulations, the results of which can be very sensitive to computational parameters such as grid topology and turbulence model. To the best of our knowledge, this paper presents the first CFD and wind-tunnel investigation on tandem cycling aerodynamics. The study analyses the influence of the CFD grid topology and the turbulence model on the aerodynamic forces on pilot and stoker and compares the results with wind-tunnel measurements. It is shown that certain combinations of grid topology and turbulence model give trends that are opposite to those shown by other combinations. Indeed, some combinations provide counter-intuitive drag outcomes with the stoker experiencing a drag force up to 28% greater than the pilot. Furthermore, the application of a blockage correction for two athlete bodies in close proximity is investigated. Based on a large number of CFD simulations and validation with wind-tunnel measurements, this paper provides guidelines for the accurate CFD simulation of tandem aerodynamics.  相似文献
