The outcomes of two studies reported here indicate that the teacher inservice workshops, combined with activity-based science lessons, affected students' attitudes and perceptions about electricity. With an academic workforce undergoing transformation, it is vital that universities rethink how they define and value scholarship through their processes for academic promotion. A key part of this rethink is to review and refine existing documentation about promotion to reflect changing conceptions of scholarly work, in a way that enables scholars from non-traditional academic pathways to be valued equally through the promotion process with their more traditional counterparts. This process of reviewing scholarship was the aim of a promotions review project which began at the University of Wollongong in 2011 and concluded with the production of an Academic Performance Framework (APF). This article reports on a study that investigated a professional development initiative in Australia to address a decline
in reading comprehension scores in the middle and upper years of Primary school. It describes the professional learning journey
of a middle primary teacher and his literacy coach over a period of 12 months as they worked to improve the teacher’s knowledge
and skills to explicitly teach reading comprehension. A series of classroom observations and interviews at the beginning,
middle and end of the school year were analysed for the kinds of reading skills taught and the nature of the instruction.
The data suggest that there were significant changes in the teacher’s pedagogical repertoires and practices and an observed
