The gap between Spanish speakers' word reading and word knowledge: a longitudinal study 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This longitudinal study modeled growth rates, from ages 4.5 to 11, in English and Spanish oral language and word reading skills among 173 Spanish-speaking children from low-income households. Individual growth modeling was employed using scores from standardized measures of word reading, expressive vocabulary, and verbal short-term language memory. The trajectories demonstrate that students' rates of growth and overall ability in word reading were on par with national norms. In contrast, students' oral language skills started out below national norms and their rates of growth, although surpassing the national rates, were not sufficient to reach age-appropriate levels. The prejudice-reducing effects of intergroup contact have been well documented. However few studies have investigated the importance of the broader context within which contact occurs. The current study examined the predictors of social distance from Muslims in a large sample of Australian secondary school children (N = 980). Intergroup contact was an important predictor of reduced social distance even after demographics and perceptions of parents, school, media and broader intergroup dynamics were taken into account. However, in part the contact–social distance relationship was mediated by perceived parental support for intergroup relations and perceived fairness of media representation. Student's perceptions of broader group dynamics relating to collective threat and differentiation between groups impeded the relationship. The findings attest to the importance of the broader context within which contact occurs. Having contact with outgroup members leads to reduced social distance to the outgroup, however perceived norms and outgroup perceptions play a pivotal role in explaining this relationship. 相似文献

In its drive for higher efficiency and effectiveness in higher education, the Australian Commonwealth Government released
its policy on higher education, Higher Education: A Policy Statement during the late 1980s which contributed to the introduction of performance indicators to manage and assess the performance
of the higher education system. The research component of annual Commonwealth funding to universities, called the Research
Quantum, is now distributed by a set of performance indicators: external research income, publications count and higher degree
research completions. This paper analysed the impact of these indicators on the research activities of Australian university
academics based on Leibenstein's model of X-efficiency. Although the impact of performance indicators on university academics
was found to follow the pressure-effort relationship, for some respondents, the increase in effort as a result of heightened
pressure had involved strategic behaviour. Two conditions that are identified for the minimisation of an institution's X-inefficiency
despite high staff effort are a high ratio of maximising to non-maximising decisions for both the staff and institution, and
for all the institution's essential objectives/activities, and not just those which are measured by the performance indicators.
The implications of these findings for the development and application of performance indicators are discussed.
