During the first half of the twentieth century, mainstream US eugenicists believed in the overarching importance of heredity in human development. Effective popularizers, they actively worked for legislation that would limit immigration from southern and eastern Europe, sterilize those judged as socially inferior, and segregate the feeble-minded. With the help of like-minded educational leaders, they also influenced school policy and curriculum during this period. Drawing upon Foucault's conception of normalization and Banks' notion of knowledge types, I contend that eugenics is acase example of normalization. The paper outlines one aspect of this process through analyses of the popular eugenic knowledge exhibited at US State fairs and of the mainstream eugenic knowledge found in the work of Leta S. Hollingworth, an early US leader in giftedness education. These knowledge forms added to hegemonic social constructions of merit, race and disability in the US in the 1920s. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to identify opportunities for partnership between the communities of public health workers and health sciences librarians. METHODS: The authors review competencies in public health and health sciences librarianship. They highlight previously identified public health informatics competencies and the Medical Library Association's essential areas of knowledge. Based on points of correspondence between the two domains, the authors identify specific opportunities for partnership. RESULTS: The points of correspondence between public health and health sciences librarianship are reflected in several past projects involving both communities. These previous collaborations and the services provided by health sciences librarians at many public health organizations suggest that some health sciences librarians may be considered full members of the public health workforce. Opportunities remain for productive collaboration between public health workers and health sciences librarians. CONCLUSIONS: Drawing on historical and contemporary experience, this paper presents an initial framework for forming collaborations between health sciences librarians and members of the public health workforce. This framework may stimulate thinking about how to form additional partnerships between members of these two communities. 相似文献

As libraries continue to increase the amount of content purchased in electronic format, the convention of signing a license agreement for each electronic product has become overly burdensome for both libraries and publishers. The delays inherent in this process have also created barriers to access for patrons. The NISO Shared E-Resource Understanding (SERU) working group was formed in 2006 to develop a best practices alternative that will allow libraries and publishers to avoid licenses for some types of electronic resources by agreeing to the “Statements of Common Understandings for Subscribing to Electronic Resources” outlined on the NISO web site (http://www.niso.org/committees/SERU). This report summarizes the history of the project and outlines next steps for libraries and publishers. 相似文献

Many mathematics departments have instituted transition-to-proof courses for second semester sophomores to help them learn how to construct proofs and to prepare them for proof-based courses, such as abstract algebra and real analysis. We have developed a way of getting students, who often stare at a blank piece of paper not knowing what to do, to start writing proofs. This is the technique of writing proof frameworks, which is based on the logical structure of the statements of the theorems and associated definitions. Also, in order to unpack the conclusion and know what is to be proved, students need definitions to become “operable.” 相似文献
