The concepts behind the technology of genetic modification of organisms and its applications are complex. A diverse range of opinions, public concern and considerable media interest accompanies the subject. This study explores the knowledge and attitudes of science teachers and senior secondary biology students about the application of a rapidly expanding technology, genetic engineering, to food production. The results indicated significant difference in understanding of concepts related with genetically engineered food stuffs between teachers and students. The most common ideas about genetically modified food were that cross bred plants and genetically modified plants are not same, GM organisms are produced by inserting a foreign gene into a plant or animal and are high yielding. More teachers thought that genetically engineered food stuffs were unsafe for the environment. Both teachers and students showed number of misconceptions, for example, the pesticidal proteins produced by GM organisms have indirect effects through bioaccumulation, induces production of allergic proteins, genetic engineering is production of new genes, GM plants are leaky sieves and that transgenes are more likely to introgress into wild species than mutated species. In general, more students saw benefits while teachers were cautious about the advantages of genetically engineered food stuffs.  相似文献

Although competition is regarded as a powerful motivator in game‐based learning, it might have a negative influence, such as damage to confidence, on students who lose the competition. In this paper, we propose an indirect approach, substitutive competition, to alleviate such negative influences. The approach is used to develop a My‐Pet v3 system, in which pupils master subject materials to make their pets stronger, and compete against each other. Specifically, pupils learn Chinese idioms in a pet‐training game scenario, and their mastery of the material is related to the pets' strength to win the competition. The result of the competition is influenced by whether pupils spend enough effort on the learning tasks. This intention is expected to alleviate the negative influence that results from direct competition. A within‐subject experiment was conducted to examine the influence of substitutive competition. The results indicated that substitutive competition seems a promising scheme to maximise the power of competition. However, there were no apparent evidences in this study to demonstrate its effect to alleviate pupils' sense of failure, as compared with other two direct competition conditions.  相似文献

A formulation and solution scheme of free final time fractional optimal control problems is presented in this paper. The dynamic constraint is described by a fractional differential equation. Performance index considered is a function of both the state and control variables. The necessary conditions of optimality and the transversality condition are obtained using Lagrange multiplier technique. A numerical technique similar to Shooting method is used for solving the optimal conditions. Numerical example is provided to show the effectiveness of the formulation and numerical solution scheme. It is interesting to note that the final time changes with the interchange of the boundary conditions, which does not occur in classical optimal control problems.  相似文献

文章基于"指代消解"、"文本外部特征"、"图排序"的混合方法实现多语言多文档新闻摘要系统。该系统由四大模块组成,分别为:原文预处理;基于文本外部特征的摘要计算;基于图排序的摘要计算与;摘要生成模块。首先对新闻文本进行预处理和指代消解,然后在第二模块使用文本外部特征(如:主题词、线索词语、关键词与其同义词、时间、地点、命名实体等)来计算原文中句子的重要程度,句子与新闻主题的相关度,并且对每个句子第一次打分。然后在第三模块采用图排序的算法再从原文中计算句子之间的连贯程度,并且第二次对每个句子打分。最后在第四模块通过两个不同算法的得分计算原文中句子的总得分并且按原文中句子出现的顺序摘出新闻文本的摘要。文章以汉语、英语、孟加拉语为例,实现该系统并进行摘要测试。实验表明系统能够从三个不同语种的多文档新闻文本中有效地摘出摘要。  相似文献

Allostery is a mechanism by which the activity of a large number of proteins is regulated. It is manifested as a change in the activity, either ligand binding or catalysis of one site of a protein due to a ligand binding to another distinct site of the protein. The allosteric effect is transduced by a change in the structural properties of the protein. It has been traditionally understood using either the concerted MWC (Monod, Wyman and Changeux) model, or the sequential KNF (Koshland, Nemethy and Filmer) model of structural changes. However, allostery is fundamentally a thermodynamic process and requires an alteration in the enthalpy or entropy associated with the process.  相似文献

This article argues that the use of the Library of Congress subject heading “East Indians” in reference to individuals from India represents not only a problematic vestige of colonialism, but also a failure of the principle of literary warrant. It provides an overview of the term's historical roots and then examines whether the term is still widely used in published resources. Although assigning a subject heading is not easy and can involve a choice between contested realities of diverse peoples, the author contends that a rejection of outdated terminology is central to providing any culturally sensitive tool for resource organization.  相似文献

With the presence of online, digital content and new services for manipulating and searching it, printing and publishing firms may experience technological uncertainty and risk and diminishing profitability. Mergers and acquisitions are approaches for dealing with the current technology and market changes that are underway in the printing and publishing industry. Using an event study methodology and a sample of 60 U.S. printing and publishing firms, this study investigates the value creation of acquiring information technology (IT) services firms. The study's findings reveal that printing and publishing firms experience significant increases in their market values as a result of acquiring IT services firms. In fact, non-newspaper firms realize the largest increases in market value. The study's findings should help academicians and practitioners understand the kinds of strategic acquisitions from which printing and publishing firms are most likely to benefit.  相似文献
