Since 1931, the National Library Service has been providing a variety of services to the blind and physically handicapped. It annually produces about 2,400 books and seventy magazines in braille, cassette, or disc editions. This article describes the selection and production of materials, as well as the system for providing services. Mona M. Werner is head of the Collection Development Section, and Alfred D. Citing statistics from a recent OECD report on education, the author offers some generalizations with regard to the ways in which increasing economic competition will influence the functioning and the course programmes of higher education. Operations will have to become increasingly efficient, and course programmes, increasingly targeted towards the fulfillment of economic goals. Enrollments will have to expand to respond to the demand for highly trained manpower, the technical, economics, and management fields being particularly important. Counselling will play an increasingly crucial role in assuring that students make the best choices and withstand the rigours of what will be a tougher university life. Although European universities and course programmes are converging, a certain variety and the retaining of distinct cultural traditions will also be a source of competitivity.  相似文献

Teachers’ pedagogical/psychological knowledge (PPK) is an important aspect of teacher competence. All conceptualisations developed so far assume that PPK is general and not specific for subjects or educational contexts. The authors take up this assumption and examine empirically whether PPK of school teachers and adult education teachers is general, i.?e. generic for subjects and educational contexts. Based on a conceptualisation validated through an expert survey (N = 44) the development of a digital test instrument with text- and videobased items is described. The article reports on the results of the structure, reliability, and DIF analyses of two PPK-facets on a total of N = 212 school and adult education teachers; analyses showed that both facets can be measured reliably with only small DIF-effects. The results point to the fact that – largely in line with the results of a literature content analysis and the expert survey – PPK is general over educational contexts. Finally, results are discussed with regard to the potentials of videobased instruments to measure teachers’ professional competence.  相似文献

The purpose of our study was to examine mentors’ conceptualizations of mentoring residents (preservice teachers) in a teacher residency program. Understanding the nuances of mentoring in a year-long placement in a mentor’s classroom may further illuminate mentoring in this context. In this qualitative, longitudinal study, we used constant comparative analysis to allow the data to drive recurring patterns and ideas linked to real-life situations and values coding to examine mentors’ conceptualizations of mentoring in a residency program. Residents enrolled in the federally-funded Teaching Residency Program for Critical Shortage Areas program were placed in a high-need urban secondary school for a year-long clinical experience to work alongside mentors, who had a non-evaluative role. By examining mentors’ conceptualizations of mentoring in this particular context, our data reveal aspects of their agency that reflected three main themes: (a) professional altruism, (b) extant knowledge, and (c) resident as stimulus. Our findings add to the research on mentoring by illuminating the voices of mentors to describe how they conceptualized mentoring and to further examine their motivations for mentoring, contributions to the mentee, and professional gains.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Der vorliegende Beitrag besch?ftigt sich aus der Perspektive von Theorien zum Kompetenzerwerb mit dem Zusammenhang zwischen dem fachspezifischen Professionswissen von Mathematiklehrkr?ften und ihrer Ausbildung und beruflichen Fortbildung. Dabei wurden institutionelle Unterschiede der Lehramtsausbildung wie auch individuelle Unterschiede im Studienerfolg, der Berufserfahrung und der besuchten beruflichen Fortbildungen untersucht. Die Analysen basieren auf Daten von 195 Mathematiklehrkr?ften, die an der COACTIV-Studie teilnahmen. Unsere Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich Lehrkr?fte unterschiedlicher Lehr?mter deutlich in ihrem professionellen Wissen unterscheiden und dass insbesondere der Erfolg im Studium mit besseren Leistungen im Fachwissen und im fachdidaktischen Wissen zusammen hing. Wir diskutieren Implikationen unserer Ergebnisse vor dem Hintergrund der Lehramtsausbildung und beruflicher Fortbildungen.   相似文献

The relative age effect (RAE) has been demonstrated in many youth and professional sports. In this study, we hypothesized that there would also be a RAE among youth chess players who are typically involved in a complex cognitive task without significant physical requirements. While typical RAEs have been observed in adult chess players, in this paper we wanted to focus primarily on youth chess players. In addition, we also examined RAEs in both participation rates and performance levels in a national chess championship. Therefore, the RAE was examined in a complex cognitive task that has no significant physical requirements, more specifically among youth chess players. Data were analyzed (1) for all registered Belgian youth chess players over a 5-year period (2009–2013) and (2) for participants of the Belgian youth championship 2013. Results indicated an overall RAE among all Belgian youth chess players over the last 5 years. The likelihood of participation was significantly greater for players born in the first birth-date quartile (χ² = 10.21, p < .05; r = ?.77, p < .01; w = .07) and the likelihood of participation decreased when youth chess players were born in the last quartile of the year. These effects were most prominent in the under-8 and under-10 year olds. There also appeared to be a performance-related RAE. Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests (p < .05) showed that players born in the first months of the selection year were significantly more often in the top 10 players for each age level of the Belgian Youth Championship 2013.  相似文献
