The Ministry of Education and Culture in Zimbabwe has introduced an intervention into the school curricula to complement the already existing mechanisms in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The literature in this programme is said to be designed to develop children’s knowledge of HIV/AIDS and to maximise both individual and community commitment to the safest protective behaviour possible. This paper argues that despite the Ministry’s efforts there is a dearth of such literature which would depict human relations and experiences in the context of HIV/AIDS in the corpus of Zimbabwean children’s literature in schools. It proposes that more fiction about HIV/AIDS could effectively complement the current non-fictional texts used in most Zimbabwean schools. This paper seeks therefore, to clarify the need for fictional narratives in which the disease plays a part since they will provide the main context in which young children learn to cope with the realities associated with HIV/AIDS through education. It posits that Zimbabwean children’s literature should also depict the conceptual framework within which health, human interaction and sexuality are understood in relation to the epidemic. Hazel Tafadzwa Ngoshi is with the department of English and Communication, Midlands State University, Zimbabwe. She teaches Renaissance and 20th century English literature and autobiography. A holder of a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Zimbabwe, her research interests include children’s literature and autobiography. Currently, she is writing a book on Zimbabwean female (auto) biographies. Juliet Sylvia Pasi holds a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Zimbabwe. She teaches Communication and African literature in the department of English and Communication at the Midlands State University, Zimbabwe. Currently, she is researching on aspects of orality in Zimbabwean children’s literature and the mediation of gender identities in African literature.  相似文献

目的:了解艾滋病高发地区学生家长对艾滋病知识的了解情况,探讨他们对受艾滋病影响儿童的态度及影响因素,为开展受艾滋病影响儿童学校关爱与支持工作提供科学依据.方法:采取多级随机抽样方法,根据当地艾滋病疫情程度进行不同分层整群抽样,于2009年7月至2010年3月选取云南、河南2个地区小学、初中和高中学生的家长1108名进行自填式匿名问卷调查.结果:不同地区、性别、文化程度家长对受艾滋病影响儿童态度的差异具有统计学意义(P<0.05);家长态度与非传播途径知识、传播途径知识、预防知识、常识得分呈正相关(P<0.01);与男性家长相比,女性态度更易趋于负向;与河南家长比较,云南家长态度趋于负向;与初中及以下文化程度相比,文化程度越高态度越趋于负向;非传播途径知识、预防知识、常识得分越高者,态度越趋于正向.结论:学生家长艾滋病知识有待提高,家长性别、文化程度,以及缺乏艾滋病非传播途径知识、预防知识和常识是影响家长对受艾滋病影响儿童歧视态度的因素.  相似文献

Social undermining as a strong predictor of adverse health outcomes in people living with HIV (PLWH), yet little is known about the experiences that constitute social undermining in this population. We led community-engaged research to identify and understand experiences of social undermining of PLWH in largely rural, minority-majority Southwestern communities. While past research focused on stigma-related experiences, participants in this study also told stories that shared their feelings of being undermined by lack of patient-centered care that they did not attribute to stigma, but to bureaucratic and impersonal service provision that marginalized them. These experiences create stress and serve as barriers for participants’ well-being and care. By bringing to the front experiences and mechanisms of social undermining, these findings advance theory, research, and practice regarding social undermining and living with HIV in diverse communities.  相似文献

Communication is a means of managing uncertainty. In a state of uncertainty: (a) information seeking can reduce uncertainty by allowing for better discrimination between or among alternatives; (b) information seeking can increase uncertainty by increasing the number of alternatives, or by blurring the distinction between or among alternatives; and (c) information avoidance can maintain uncertainty. Individuals living with HIV or AIDS, like many other chronically‐ill or terminally‐ill individuals, must manage high levels of uncertainty about their illness. Participants in a focus group study of persons with HIV or AIDS reported effective uncertainty management, including managing uncertainty that was challenging, managing uncertainty that was essential for maintaining hope, learning to live with chronic uncertainty, and managing information problems. New information can serve uncertainty management even if it fails to reduce the number or ambiguity of alternatives, because new information can invite a reappraisal of uncertainty. A theory of uncertainty management based on these findings is offered.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study explored how men who have sex with men (MSM) communicated their use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) on smartphone applications. Informed by the theory of problematic integration and uncertainty management, we asked if revealing ‘HIV negative, on PrEP’ status on smartphone applications might increase one's uncertainty in communicating about safe sex with others. We conducted interviews with 31 Taiwanese MSM currently taking PrEP who participated in a national demonstration project. We identified three types of PrEP-related uncertainty: condition, information, and stigma uncertainty. Applied implications of our findings indicate the importance of the feasibility of medical infrastructure in implementing PrEP, the complication in translating scientific and medical jargon into everyday language, and dynamics of negotiating stigmas associated with HIV and AIDS in the context of HIV prevention.  相似文献

艾滋病公益广告中的女性形象在西方发达国家和中国大陆之间存在着极大的差异.西方艾滋病公益广告中,女性形象多用真人女性扮演,不少广告内容大胆、火爆而奇异.中国大陆艾滋病公益广告里,女性形象模糊而抽象,多用符号替代.中西方的艾滋病广告从主题到广告表现形成迥然不同的风格,与艾滋病的国情差异及中西方不同的文化背景有关.  相似文献
