Shakespearean Intertexts and European Identities in Contemporary Black British Fiction

The article analyses the presence of William Shakespeare as intertext in three recent novels by black British writers which deploy the work of the Bard as they explore British and European identities. Caryl Phillips’s The Nature of Blood recreates an Othello-like figure who in early Modern Venice struggles to come to terms with his identity as an outsider. Zadie Smith’s White Teeth summarises the influence of imperial history in contemporary English society with The Tempest’s idea that ‘What is past is prologue’ and evokes an African presence in Shakespeare’s England by way of the dark lady in sonnets. Bernardine Evaristo’s Soul Tourists presents a journey through European countries that are haunted by the ghosts of old African inhabitants, among them the dark lady of the sonnets. These novels use their dialogue with William Shakespeare to construct stories of Africans in Europe in the past centuries that question received narratives of the British nation and undermine the myth of an all-white Europe.  相似文献   

Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield as Information Object: A Case Study of Serial Literature in the Victorian World of Documents

ABSTRACT

Documents reflect the historical contexts of their creation, and in doing so, become information objects. The serial novel is a type of information object, but due to re-editioning, reversioning, and digitization, most readers have lost touch with its historical significance. This analysis of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield (1849–1850) uses the lens of information theory, in relation to literary criticism, historiography, and the history of the book, to grasp the serial novel as an information object, arguing that doing so requires intimate familiarity with the physical nature of the book in parts and the historical context of its production.  相似文献

20世纪80年代以来世界各国普遍进行行政改革,在这样的大背景下,撒切尔、梅杰政府先后对文官制度进行了大刀阔斧的改革。主要内容有削减文官人数、改革工资体系、改善部门管理、实行＂财政管理计划＂和＂下一步计划＂、颁布《市民宪章》,推行市场检验等。保守党政府的改革遇到不少困难,但改革使传统的文官制度发生了较大的变化,一种新型的文官制度正逐步建立。  相似文献

许多西方生态学家将当今世界生态环境危机的历史文化根源归结为<圣经>中所体现出来的人类中心主义理念.然而,经过对<圣经>故事中所隐含的生态理念的全面分析,发现<圣经>中的上帝实际上是自然规律的拟人化形象,自然规律在<圣经>中就是上帝的诫命和意志;<圣经>中的生态观不但不是当今生态环境恶化的历史文化根源,而且非常符合现代生态保护理念.  相似文献   

英国"少数民族学生学业成就拨款计划"述评

少数民族学生的学业成就相对落后是世界各国普遍存在的问题,对此英国政府和教育界积极应对。英国从1998年起,实行少数民族学业成就拨款计划(Ethnic Minority Achieve-ment Grant,简称EMAG),以鼓励地方教育局和学校重视与满足双语学习者及少数民族学生的特殊需要,使少数民族学生的学业成就稳步提高。我国在这方面可以借鉴,应重视少数民族学生的学业成就,给予相对落后者及时、有效的援助,以实现更加全面、更为充分的教育公平。  相似文献

多科技术学院作为英国应用型高校的典型代表，其治理模式在1992年前后发生了一系列的变迁。结合三角模型理论和系统理论分析方法，对英国应用型高校外部治理模式变迁的模式演进、动力来源和内在逻辑进行探究。研究发现：英国应用型高校外部治理模式变迁的样态表征为由科层模式转向市场模式；变迁的动力来源于历史、环境和行动者三个要素的互联互动；变迁的内在逻辑表现为历史要素和环境要素决定行动者路径选择的方式和范围，变迁实践兼具创新突破性与路径依赖性。研究对我国应用型高校外部治理模式改革的启示在于，应遵循有序渐进式变迁逻辑，结合基本国情探索具有中国特色的治理模式。  相似文献
