Education in a multiracial and multicultural society needs to reflect that kind of environment. In Malaysia, the curriculum is expected to play an important role in the formation of fundamental attitudes and images and in promoting national unity and integration. This paper examines the role of textbooks in addressing the above issues from the point of view of a minority community. An analysis of selected Lower Secondary School textbooks is carried out using quantitative content analysis and qualitative strategies. The paper concludes that some textbooks provide curriculum content appropriate for a multicultural society whereas others have concentrated heavily on majority race identity. Textbook writers should be made more sensitive to the nation-building intent through provision of and adherence to a set of guidelines.  相似文献

The contribution of the e‐textbooks can be enormous considering their additional supporting features, but adoption has not crystallized yet. This study examines the relevant experiences of college students in terms of how the use of e‐textbooks may enhance their learning. A survey study was conducted to measure the perceptions of each student on how helpful an e‐textbook is for facilitating learning (i.e., E‐book Helpfulness), how well it promotes his/her involvement in learning (i.e., Student Involvement), and how much improvement it makes on learning outcome (i.e., Learning Outcome). Results indicate that e‐textbooks are perceived as enhancers of student learning experiences in two complementing routes: (1) E‐textbook Helpfulness enhances students’ learning outcomes directly and (2) Student Involvement plays an important mediating role between E‐textbook Helpfulness and Learning Outcome if students use e‐textbooks in class. These findings suggest that the successful adoption of e‐textbooks requires schools to provide necessary resources (e.g., computer labs) and instructors to actively engage students in using e‐textbooks.  相似文献

清末日本监狱学书的中译本在日本出版之后,主要通过轮船寄至中国,由指定书店销至各地;在国内书籍销售中采用了报刊广告等近代化营销手段;监狱类书籍还通过封疆大吏以地方法政考试用书的方式,大量订购,流向官场读者;在日本政治家大隈重信主持编纂并赠送清朝皇帝大臣的宣扬明治维新成果的《开国五十年史》丛书中,也有监狱书籍。通过这四条书路,日本近代监狱改良思想在中国得到传播。  相似文献

The physics and chemistry education literature has grappled with an appropriate definition for the concept of heat for the past four decades. Most of the literature promotes the view that heat is ‘energy in transit’ or ‘involves the transfer of energy’ between the system and surroundings because of a difference in temperature. Given that many undergraduate students are not learning the concept of heat in physics and chemistry alone, the goal of this investigation is to explore the conceptions of heat as presented in textbooks from across the science disciplines. An analysis of the definitions of heat from physics, chemistry, the biological sciences and the earth sciences showed a significant variation in the definitions within a discipline and between the disciplines. Specifically, the physics and chemistry textbooks used ‘energy in transit’ or ‘transfer of energy’ definitions (Class I), whereas textbooks from other disciplines typically used definitions which relate heat to ‘molecular kinetic energy’ (Class II) or they used a hybrid of Class I and II definitions. Although a universal definition of heat across disciplines may not be possible (or even desirable), we suggest that discrepancies in definitions be acknowledged and clearly communicated to students.  相似文献
