ABSTRACT

Low academic achievements are predicted by early disadvantages. Because achievement gaps typically escalate with age, early efforts to prevent future academic disadvantages are called for. The current study examines whether exposure to structured pre-academic activities in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) play a compensatory role for the early academic achievements in school (teacher ratings and screening tests of reading and math) of children who were at developmental (low receptive language), behavioral (high externalizing behavior and low effortful control) and socio-economic (low maternal education) risk in preschool. Using a sample of 934 children from the longitudinal Behavioral Outlook Developmental Study to examine between-school comparisons and within-school fixed effects models, findings suggest that preschoolers with externalizing behaviors may moderately benefit from structured pre-academic activities prior to school entry. However, it is concluded that this pre-academic boost is weak and may be limited to a short transition period from ECEC to school.  相似文献

Community service trips are often viewed as educational because students supposedly cross socio-economic, racial, and other borders to engage with people of various backgrounds. However, diversity among students, their differing experiences of the service trip, and the ways they learn from each other’s experiences are rarely discussed. Based on ethnographic research conducted during an alternative spring break trip from the north-eastern United States to New Mexico in 2014, this article examines student narratives about their diverse experiences – particularly regarding staying at a hostel and going on hikes – and shows how they learned about the construction of differences from sharing their experiences. This article’s findings challenge the preconceived border between volunteers and the community members they work for as the only difference and show that service trips are often culturally biased in favour of white middle-class experiences. The article suggests “pedagogy of exploration” that encourages students to examine their own diverse experiences and what caused that diversity.  相似文献

Science education reform efforts in the Unites States call for a dramatic shift in the way students are expected to engage with scientific concepts, core ideas, and practices in the classroom. This new vision of science learning demands a more complex conceptual understanding of student engagement and research models that capture both the multidimensionality and contextual specificity of student engagement in science. In a unique application of person‐oriented analysis of experience sampling data, we employ cluster analysis to identify six distinct momentary engagement profiles representing different combinations of the behavioral, cognitive, and affective dimensions of student engagement in high school science classrooms. Students spend a majority of their classroom time in one of several engagement profiles characterized by high engagement on one dimension, but low levels on the others. Students exhibited low engagement across all three dimensions of engagement in about 22% of our observations. Full engagement, or high levels across all three dimensions, is the least frequent profile, occurring in only 11% of the observations. Students’ momentary engagement profiles are related in meaningful ways to both the learning activity in which students are engaged and the types of choices they are afforded. Laboratory activities provided especially polarized engagement experiences, producing full engagement, universally low engagement, and pleasurable engagement in which students are affectively engaged but are not engaged cognitively or behaviorally. Student choice is generally associated with more optimal engagement profiles and the specific type of choice matters in important ways. Choices about how to frame the learning activity have the most positive effects relative to other types of choices, such as choosing whom to work with or how much time to take. Results are discussed in terms of implications for practice and the utility of the methodological approach for evaluating the complexities of student engagement in science classrooms. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 我国古代儒家文化以天人关系的自然宇宙观为肇始,延伸至天地人鬼神、天地君亲师等人伦关系,尤其是以父子、君臣、夫妇、兄弟、朋友等"五伦"关系为主要内容的伦理规范,成为儒家思想的核心内容。唐宋时期是我国儒释道文化"三教合流"的重要时期,也是中华茶文化兴起与发展的鼎盛时期,茶文化在自身发展过程中不断与处于中华正统地位的儒家文化发生交融、互动、互构。随着饮茶之风的盛行,"茶"这一自然之物在各类茶事交往活动中成为了"国饮",并逐渐被赋予了丰富的伦理意涵。  相似文献
