This article reports on the findings of a small‐scale study into the perceptions of 78 primary school children regarding the adults in their classrooms. The data show that children easily differentiate between their own class teacher and other adults, but report a substantial overlap between the activities of teachers and teaching assistants. Some express the difference in terms of status rather than role. Accounts call into question the notion that teaching assistants ‘help’ rather than teach and that there is a clear division of labour between them and teachers. Teachers and assistants are seen as working in an interdependent way, with each making a significant contribution to children's learning. The difficulties of using children's language as evidence are considered and it is concluded that the notion of a ‘remodelled’ primary school workforce needs to take into account the ways in which teachers and assistants maintain fluid working relationships. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThe Circles of Adults (CoA) group problem solving process has been used by educational psychologists (EPs) when supporting vulnerable educational placements, but its effects upon staff or student outcomes have not been explored. CoAs were used in the current research with staff supporting Children Looked After (CLA) in secondary schools. A quasi-experimental explanatory, sequential, mixed-methods design investigated changes in participant causal attributions, perceived self-efficacy, and perceived implementation of subsequent actions. Participation in the CoA had no significant effects upon causal attributions or self-efficacy; however, staff perceived greater self-efficacy and success in implementing actions following the CoA. They valued the process, reporting enhanced group cohesion and task focus. Insights and empathy were deepened regarding the focus student, as were awareness of group processes and reflection. Threats in small-scale research are considered and a possible mechanism for the CoA’s effect as a supervisory approach is proposed. 相似文献

The applicability of Klein's Mediational intervention for sensitizing caregivers (MISC) to adolescents and adults with intellectual disability (ID) was examined, and the quality of paraprofessionals' interactions with these populations in special education schools and in vocational rehabilitation centres was compared. Interactions were video taped and coded. The findings support the MISC suitability for adolescents and adults with ID, but demonstrate significant differences between facilities. Opportunities for choice making, expanding and encouraging with explanation were observed more at the schools, whereas mediation of verbal instructions and physical assistance were observed more in the centres. Negative attitudes of staff towards modifiability of adult persons with ID may be a possible explanation. 相似文献
