COUNTER Release 5: What’s New and What It Means to Libraries

A new release of the COUNTER Code of Practice, Release 5 (R5), was recently published and becomes the standard that publishers and content providers must comply with when they deliver the January 2019 usage data to their customers. A Study of the Effectiveness of Web-Based Homework in Teaching Undergraduate Business Statistics

Web-based homework (WBH) Technology can simplify the creation and grading of assignments as well as provide a feasible platform for assessment testing, but its effect on student learning in business statistics is unknown. This is particularly true of the latest software development of Web-based tutoring agents that dynamically evaluate individual students' skill level and purport to respond with appropriate, targeted teaching to improve learning efficiency. In this article, we compare traditional, textbook-based homework assignments with three systems of WBH for undergraduate business statistics courses: ALEKS, PH Grade Assist, and custom-made online quizzes in Blackboard. These systems represent a range of media from artificial intelligence–based tutoring to instructor-controlled objective testing. Using a common assessment test, we compare the performance of students taught with these different systems. Our study finds, as we anticipated, that student performance depends significantly upon teacher experience and student academic competence. Once these factors are controlled for, however, the technique used to deliver homework makes little difference in student success. In contrast to other published research, we do not find any advantage to automated tutoring and identify some limitations of this approach based on both instructor and student feedback.  相似文献

《统计学原理》是非统计学专业的财经类、管理类学科基础教育的重要环节,但传统的统计学授课方式影响了学生的学习兴趣和热情,影响了教学质量和效果。学生往往只记住了各种公式,但不会灵活运用,无法真正地运用统计学方法对旅游经济现象进行统计综合分析和解决实际问题。作者结合统计学教学实践,从教学课程定位、实际教学中存在的问题等方面,提出了旅游管理专业统计学教学的具体教学方法,如案例教学法、多媒体教学法、实验教学法和项目教学法等,注重培养学生定量分析问题、解决问题的能力,提高学生的创新能力,使之具有运用统计学基本理论知识解决旅游行业实际问题的综合素质。  相似文献   

A Project-Based Approach to Statistics and Data Science

Abstract

In an increasingly data-driven world, facility with statistics is more important than ever for our students. At institutions without a statistician, it often falls to the mathematics faculty to teach statistics courses. This paper presents a model that a mathematician asked to teach statistics can follow. This model entails connecting with faculty from numerous departments on campus to develop a list of topics, building a repository of real-world datasets from these faculty, and creating projects where students interface with these datasets to write lab reports aimed at consumers of statistics in other disciplines. The end result is students who are well prepared for interdisciplinary research, who are accustomed to coping with the idiosyncrasies of real data, and who have sharpened their technical writing and speaking skills.  相似文献
