Fifty years of the compounding effects of Moore's Law have led to enormous advances in computer processing power. Increased network speeds, the availability of big data, and machine learning techniques have accelerated the development of artificial intelligence; this promises to dramatically change many industries, including libraries. Administrators in libraries of all types face the challenge of managing and planning in times of static or declining funding and rapidly changing technology. What tools do they use to gather and employ data for decision-making and evidence-based management? Are the same tools and techniques useful for all types of libraries? Although there are established measurements and metrics for academic libraries, there are few, if any, for others such as hybrid presidential libraries which are not part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) system. This column identifies the metrics used by the pre-NARA presidential libraries and compares them to metrics used by a subgroup of Carnegie Research 1 and Research 2 libraries, those that do not participate in Association of Research Libraries (ARL) statistics program. Broadening Impact for Library Exhibitions and Speakers

Libraries curate exhibitions and host speakers to promote collections and engage communities. Traditional library exhibit spaces present information gaps for visitors. To bridge these gaps, the University of Florida (UF) created and deployed innovative technologies, the Community Engagement Engine (CEE) for iPads (handheld and kiosks). The CEE facilitates visitor's registration as well as questions and comments sent directly to curators with automated email responses with relevant materials. The CEE allows libraries to aggregate visitor information for targeted outreach and assessment. This article discusses the CEE for innovative community engagement, including considerations for other institutions interested in engaged exhibitions programs.  相似文献

Outreach to research centers and institutes is often overlooked in academic libraries. This article discusses a needs assessment conducted by the Liaison Services Department at the University of Houston Libraries that reviewed library services to centers and institutes at the University of Houston's main campus. As part of a newly created library marketing plan, librarians at the College of Wooster undertook a study of the communication preferences of students, faculty, and staff in early 2015. The results of the survey helped to develop a comprehensive picture of what library resources and services these constituencies are interested in learning about, as well as when, where, and how they prefer to learn about them. [目的/意义] 对影响人文社科领域引进人才绩效的因素进行多方面的实证研究,有助于考察引进人才在聘期内的学术能力成长效能,建立合理的考核评价指标。[方法/过程] 通过相关性分析和回归分析等方法,以高校A引进人文社科领域创新人才为数据样本,从人才引进时人员的基本情况、学术产出、科研资金投入、学术影响力和合作关系等方面构建影响该类人员引进效能评估的指标体系。[结果/结论] 人文社科领域人才引进效能受到人员引进前基本情况的影响,其学术产出、科研投入、合作情况和影响力逐层对其成长效能产生有效影响,其中以关键作者身份发文数量、依托引进单位发文数量、专著数量、获得该单位资助科研金额、引进前合作学者数量和CSSCI被引次数等变量呈现较好的评价效果。人文社科引进人才的常用指标在回归分析时出现了相互影响,需要对同一数据类型中自相关较高或共线性较高的因素进行选择。多方面考察的同时,选择有代表性的指标方能有效地揭示引进人才的成长效能。  相似文献

Reimagining the Wheel: Using Circular Calendars for Planning in Law School Libraries

This essay proposes using a wheel or circular calendar to identify and document the events and projects of an academic law school year, both in and out of the classroom. The idea of harnessing the natural cyclical process of law school for library planning comes from concept mapping, which can conceptualize an issue by using a variety of mapping strategies to organize and show the relationships between pieces of information and a central concept. This article describes the planning and development of a 3D printing makerspace at an academic health sciences library. At the start of 2015, a new library Technology Team was formed consisting of a team leader, an emerging technologies librarian, and a library systems analyst. One of the critical steps in the development of the proposal and with the planning of this project was collaborating and partnering with different departments and units outside the library.
