The effective delivery of information literacy training can be a challenging process, and health library and information professionals are constantly innovating in this area. This article presents a case study of the BHSc (Hons) Occupational therapy degree programme at York St John University to demonstrate ways in which deep integration of information skills into the curriculum can be achieved. The article advises that in the delivery of health and social care related information skills, we should look more broadly at where relevant learning can happen. In particular, contexts of the health care environment are suggested as a consideration rather than the narrow scope of the academic, classroom‐based environment. Examples are provided of specific teaching and learning activities used on the programme alongside CPD activity and curriculum design.  相似文献

Assessing college students' information literacy competencies using a librarian role-playing method

Exploring benefits and drawbacks of using a librarian role-playing method to assess student information literacy competencies enables researchers to move beyond existing methods that tend to rely on self-reports of attitude, confidence, and behavior. Two empirical studies are presented in which a librarian role-playing activity was employed along with card-sorting exercises and interviews. Thirty-two first- and second year undergraduate students participated in these two studies, during which they were instructed to imagine themselves as librarians and demonstrate how they would assist users in searching for information (Study 1) and evaluating particular sources (Study 2). Findings indicate that college students are able to use the role-playing method to perform, demonstrate, and explain their search behavior and source evaluation strategies without difficulty or discomfort. Results show that this method is effective for eliciting student reflections on and understandings of their own information literacy competencies.  相似文献

More than meets the eye: Curricular and Programmatic Effects on Student Learning

This article reports the effects of program characteristics and faculty activities on students’ experiences and, ultimately, the development of students’ analytical and group skills. Data come from nationally representative samples of 4,330 seniors, 1,243 faculty members, and 147 engineering program chairs on 40 campuses nationwide. Findings indicate that program characteristics and faculty behaviors and values have significant, if relatively small and largely indirect, effects on student learning by encouraging (or discouraging) certain kinds of student experiences, which, in turn, influence student learning. The results point to a need for more complex designs than are typically adopted in most learning outcomes studies.
