This article focuses on the possibilities of teaching in a play-based curriculum, which has become an issue of international relevance. As a domain of study, the Developmental Education approach was taken in the early grades of Dutch primary schools (grades 1–4, ages 4–8). The article describes the theoretical basis of the approach and how it is elaborated in a play-based curriculum for early years classrooms. Particularly the teachers’ strategies for the promotion of development will be discussed in more detail. Finally, the article presents a piece of the evidence base of this approach by reporting a research on vocabulary acquisition. Despite methodological limitations of the empirical study, the evidence suggests that teaching in a play-based curriculum is not only theoretically plausible and practically feasible, but also seems to be effectively useful for the attainment of positive outcomes (on vocabulary learning) as compared to a strictly teacher-driven approach.  相似文献

The identification and composition of four subtests constituting the major areas of competence of English as a foreign langauge is reported, largely based on a study of the literature. A 160-item, four-choice test was used to obtain a number of reliability and validity indices. It was found that grammar was the most reliable and the most valid component when based on total test scores as the criterion, where-as translation was lowest on these two measures. The opposite trend was observed with Grade Point Average as the criterion, whereas the third criterion, writing ability, was found to correlate highest with listening comprehension, which was also found to contribute to the highest unique nonchance variance of the four components. Formulas are derived for computing the chi-square statistic from proportions or percentages, both for tests of goodness of fit and association. The advantages of the new formulas are: (1) computation is conceptually more congruent with the hypothesis being tested; (2) interpretation is facilitated (expected frequencies and discrepancies in frequencies are a function of sample size, whereas expected proportions and corresponding discrepancies are not); and (3) computation is facilitated in contingency tables since expected proportions do not need to be determined separately for each cell.  相似文献

This paper reports on a study that used verbal protocols to uncover the cognitive strategies of children from Sydney, Australia, aged 8- to 9-years-old, when they were engaged in a range of word sorting and editing activities. The children's cognitive strategies have been analysed in terms of a developmental stage theory of spelling. The findings are contrasted with the skills and characteristics of competent spellers at each recognised stage of spelling development. The paper considers the orthographic knowledge and spelling strategies of children that are evident when they are asked to ‘think aloud’ about English words and contrasts this with what is (or is not) captured through the developmental stage theory of spelling. The article concludes with a discussion of implications for the findings on classroom practice.  相似文献

In this study, undergraduate students provided confidence ratings to predict future performance in answering questions drawn from the text before reading the text, after reading the text and after rereading the text. Self-reports of achievement goal orientations during reading and posttest scores were also collected. Student’s calibration index was the comparison between their predicted posttest performance and actual performance in the posttest. Correlational analyses did not reveal any statistically detectable relationships between self-reported goal orientations and monitoring accuracy, except that bias scores were marginally related to goal orientations. Further cluster analyses and analyses of variance (ANOVA) also showed that student’s multiple goal profiles failed to clearly differentiate the groups in terms of their calibration accuracy, yet performance-approach goals did distinguish overconfident from underconfident students. Plausible reasons for the finding were provided and implications for future research were also discussed.  相似文献
