Planning for the Budget-ocalypse: The Evolution of a Serials/ER Cancellation Methodology

The University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries are funded almost entirely by undergraduate student use fees. As the undergraduate enrollment has plateaued in recent years, the libraries have not been able to keep up with rising costs, resulting in a series of cuts to the materials budget totaling around $3.25 million. While some of these cuts took the form of reductions in firm orders and dissolution of approval plans, for the past three years the bulk has come from cancellations of serials and electronic resources. With each year’s cuts, the UNT Collection Development department has been forced to modify and refine their deselection process. This article will show the development of UNT’s strategy for determining cancellations using a variety of methods (overlap analysis, usage statistics, faculty input) and tools (EBSCO Usage Consolidation, Serials Solutions 360).  相似文献

Teaching ‘community engagement’ in engineering education for international development: Integration of an interdisciplinary social work curriculum

This article reviews the literature on challenges faced by engineering faculty in educating their students on community-engaged, sustainable technical solutions in developing countries. We review a number of approaches to increasing teaching modules on social and community components of international development education, from adding capstone courses and educational track seminars to integrating content from other disciplines, particularly the social sciences. After summarising recent pedagogical strategies to increase content on community-focused development, we present a case study of how one engineering programme incorporates social work students and faculty to infuse strategies for community engagement in designing and implementing student-led global engineering development projects. We outline how this interdisciplinary pedagogical approach teaches students from the two disciplines to work together in addressing power balances, economic and social issues and overall sustainability of international development projects.  相似文献

国家自主创新示范区产业转型升级水平测度及其影响因素研究

国家自主创新示范区测度产业转型升级的发展水平和探析各影响因素,对于推动国家自主创新示范区的产业可持续发展、更好发挥国家自主创新示范区的高质量区域经济引领作用,意义重大。研究联合体通过产业共性技术研发带动区域产业向价值链上游转移,为研究国家自主创新示范区的产业转型升级提供了新视角。选取2014-2019年我国21个国家自主创新示范区的面板数据,基于研究联合体的视角构建涵括产业结构水平、创新驱动水平、数智赋能水平和绿色发展水平四个维度的国家自主创新示范区产业转型升级水平测度体系,利用熵权TOPSIS模型评价国家自主创新示范区产业转型升级发展水平,并运用固定效应模型寻找其发展水平的影响因素。实证分析结果显示：示范区产业转型升级平均水平为0.470,处于中等水平;水平最高的深圳与最低的乌昌石之间的差为0.545,差距较大;东部示范区整体发展水平高于中西部;南方示范区产业转型升级平均水平为0.519远高于北方的0.3932,南北方差距明显。进一步分析影响因素表明：示范区研发创新能力与产业转型升级呈正相关,研发创新通过知识发现和技术创造带动示范区产业向价值链上游转移;人才支撑能力与示范区产业转型升级呈正相关,示范区通过提升人才存量进而引发“知识外溢”效应带动产业转型升级;创新服务能力与示范区产业转型升级呈正相关,示范区通过搭建良好的企业经营环境提供完善的保障服务促进产业转型升级;经济牵引能力对产业转型升级呈正相关,示范区通过吸引资源要素聚集促进产业转型升级;示范区开放合作能力未通过显著性检验,表明整体而言开放合作跟示范区产业转型升级的关系不大。鉴于此,示范区应搭建完善的研发创新环境、打造致力产业共性技术研究的研发平台、构建研发人才体系、探索差异化的产业转型升级路径。  相似文献

本文利用马尔科夫链来理解重大工程的不确定性和动态演化特征,利用熵理论来量化重大工程的复杂性水平,建立了重大工程复杂性的马尔科夫链-熵度量模型。结果表明,重大工程的复杂性包括技术、环境、组织、目标、信息和任务六个维度,并具有结构性、不确定性和动态性特征。马尔科夫链可以用来描述过程,熵可以用来量化复杂性。该研究可以揭示重大工程的宏观状态与微观状态之间的关系,测度重大工程的复杂性水平,分析可持续发展趋势并进行预测决策和控制。  相似文献

Establishing a ‘Centre for Engineering Experimentation and Design Simulation’: a step towards restructuring engineering education in India

Reforms in undergraduate engineering curriculum to produce engineers with entrepreneurial skills should address real-world problems relevant to industry and society with active industry support. Technology-assisted, hands-on projects involving experimentation, design simulation and prototyping will transform graduates into professionals with necessary skills to create and advance knowledge that meets global standards. To achieve this goal, this paper proposes establishing a central facility, ‘Centre for Engineering Experimentation and Design Simulation’ (CEEDS) in autonomous engineering colleges in India. The centre will be equipped with the most recent technology resources and computational facilities where students execute novel interdisciplinary product-oriented projects benefiting both industry and society. Students undertake two projects: a short-term project aimed at an engineering solution to a problem in energy, health and environment and the other a major industry-supported project devoted to a product that enhances innovation and creativity. The paper presents the current status, the theoretical and pedagogical foundation for the centre's relevance, an activity plan and its implementation in the centre for product-based learning with illustrative examples.  相似文献
