In response to rising textbook costs, many have urged adoption of open educational resources (OER) for students. However, library-owned e-books also provide free access to students, without the potential disadvantages of OER. In this study the authors explore the suitability of e-books as textbooks by examining the social sciences textbook list in Fall 2017 at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). Overall, 18% of the textbooks were available as a multi-user format and this rate increased with course level. Despite their limited availability, multi-user e-books provide a free, convenient option for students, and they may play a role in the textbook affordability solution. 相似文献

the development of digital publishing, in general. Topics covered include current business models, opportunities for licensing,
and methods for negotiating contracts. Publishers are sanguine about the possibilities; though acknowledge that the digital
rights business is still in its formative stages. Agents and author advocates are concerned that digital advances may lead
to devaluation of writer’s works. Downloadable audiobooks have already created a new market, though e-books have yet to gain

[目的/意义] 比较分析不同学科的外文学术电子图书影响力差异,丰富电子图书评价方法,为完善电子图书分类分学科的科学评价体系提供有益参考。[方法/过程] 采用Bookmetrix,以经管类、教育类的学术电子图书为研究对象,对其传统引文指标与Altmetrics指标（Mendeley读者数、关注量、下载量）、书评量的相关性与一致性定量分析,比较两学科外文电子图书各指标之间的差异并进行非参数检验。[结果/结论] 研究发现：被引量、读者数、下载量等具有较高的指标覆盖率;经K-S Z独立双样本检验,经管类和教育类电子图书的被引量、下载量存在显著差异,关注量、读者数、书评量无显著差异（p=0.05）;指标相关性具有学科差异性,被引量与Mendeley读者数的相关性,经管类图书高于教育类图书;被引量测度的是学术电子图书的学术影响力,使用数据（下载量等）与补充计量学数据较多反映图书的社会影响力。评价中文学术电子图书应将多源异构数据处理转化,构建多指标综合评价体系,将定性与定量方法相融合,使评价更全面、科学。 相似文献

Library Journal's 2011 Ebook Penetration and Use in U.S. Libraries Survey testifies to e-books’ increasing popularity in academic libraries. This review tracked literature published from 2005 that focused on academic librarians’ best practices for acquiring, cataloging, maintaining, and promoting e-books at their institutions. This article examines the impact of introducing a patron-driven acquisition service to patrons through a commercially recognizable vendor. The author reports on the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Library program, which circulated Amazon Kindles to patrons, with only the Amazon Kindle catalog and a $25 allowance serving as barriers to patron-initiated collection development. Results of this study analyze user activity, preferred subject areas, user feedback, title duplication, and related costs to maintaining the service. When the National Academies Press announced that more than 4,000 electronic books would be made freely available for download, many academic libraries expressed interest in obtaining MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) records for them. Using cataloging e-mail distribution lists, volunteers were recruited for a project to identify and upgrade bibliographic records for aggregation into a batch that could be easily loaded into catalogs. Project organization, documentation, quality control measures, and problems are described, as well as processes for adding new titles. The project's implications for future efforts are assessed, as are the numerous challenges for network-level cataloging. 相似文献

Librarians in the Health Sciences Library System at the University of Pittsburgh explored the possibility of developing an electronic reference collection that would replace the print reference collection, thus providing access to these valuable materials to a widely dispersed user population. The librarians evaluated the print reference collection and standard collection development lists as potential benchmarks for the electronic collection, and they determined which books were available in electronic format. They decided that the low availability of electronic versions of titles in each benchmark group rendered the creation of an electronic reference collection using either benchmark impractical. 相似文献
