By the time they transfer to secondary school, most young people who have serious obstacles to becoming literate will have been identified. The necessary procedures will have been completed by school and LEA staff to obtain a statement of SEND or EHC plan. Not all children are this fortunate however. Financial constraints, home, family and sometimes school circumstances may result in a child being overlooked. This article discusses the feasibility of conducting a detailed analysis of a child’s difficulties in Year 7 of the comprehensive school.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper offers a review of history of education statistics in Spain, starting in the mid-nineteenth century, describing their traditional means of operation based on censuses, flat tables, and macro-statistical data, which usually display a purely quantitative analysis. Only in recent decades have statistical analyses appeared, supported by modern office tools and parametric data processing, which facilitate qualitative research. Among other types of graphics used, for our purposes those based on serial mapping are especially revealing and useful, as they show the diachronic evolution of the variables analysed. Supported by this methodology, the present study statistically analyses the official data on state primary education in Extremadura in the second half of the nineteenth century, in order to demonstrate how significant the increase in financial investment in the late nineteenth century was and its direct impact on expanding the coverage of the educational network at a regional level. That meant the disappearance of inequalities in all educational standards (school equipment, number of appointments, salaries, gender, etc.) and, therefore, a reduction in illiteracy rates.  相似文献

Resumen

El aprendizaje de la química requiere dominar los diferentes códigos mediante los que se representa gráficamente la organización espacial de las moléculas. Los alumnos deben no sólo aprender la nomenclatura de esos sistemas de representación, sino también sus reglas sintácticas, siendo capaces de traducir de un código o lenguaje a otro, y de decidir cuándo y con qué metas deben usar cada uno de esos sistemas de representación. Para investigar cómo proceden y qué dificultades tienen estudiantes universitarios de química para usar esos sistemas de representación realizamos dos estudios. En total participaron 201 estudiantes universitarios, 174 estudiantes argentinos de un primer curso de química orgánica y 27 estudiantes españoles de la carrera de Psicología, que respondieron a tareas escritas diseñadas específicamente para esta investigación.

Los resultados mostraron que en general los estudiantes de química utilizan los diferentes sistemas de representación de forma adecuada. Sin embargo, aunque son eficaces en los procesos de traducción, no lo son en cuanto a su uso estratégico dependiente del marco teórico-conceptual. Por otra parte, al presentarles en el segundo estudio una tarea sin contenido químico, pero gráficamente isomorfa a las tareas químicas, los estudiantes de química, a diferencia de los de psicología, cometían errores característicos como consecuencia de interpretar el problema con una tarea dentro de un sistema representacional químico. Se discuten también algunas de las implicaciones de los resultados para el aprendizaje y la enseñanza de la química en la universidad.  相似文献

It is conventionally held that illiteracy is simply the absence of literacy, however the latter term happens to be defined. As such, illiteracy is nothing more than failure to achieve the literate foundation upon which success in the rhetorical curriculum depends. I challenge convention by arguing that literacy is fundamentally a rhetorical construct and that the idea of illiteracy, integral to compelling identification with literacy, is an intentional product of the rhetorical curriculum. This relationship of illiteracy to the rhetorical curriculum can be glimpsed in narratives of literacy, especially those that circulate to mass audiences in popular films. Scholars have looked to such films for evidence to illustrate academic theories about literacy. By analysing several films and their reception, I show that non-academics are actively engaged in re-theorizing illiteracy. This engagement illuminates the rhetorical dimensions of illiteracy in a way that has the potential to revise the informal rhetorical curriculum, thereby changing conventional understandings of illiteracy.  相似文献

This article functions as a research critique of a short, recent IMLS report that tied early childhood success to library card holding. The authors invite a more comprehensive and evidence-based examination of the ties between library card holding, the successes of poor children in school, and the significance of sustained library services to keep kids interested in their own educational success. Library historians can learn a great deal from studying the gender of authorship and institutional affiliation of a scholarly journal. The focus of this study is to examine these two aspects of journal production in library history to see who is producing published research in this field. Twenty-three years of Libraries & Culture were chosen as the target volumes. The study reveals that more men than women published in library history as well as locating which institutions were represented. This type of information is usedful to the library historian engaged in the analysis of published scholarship, and more generally to scholars with an interest in patterns of literature production in fields closely related to the social and behavioral sciences.  相似文献
