Three focus groups consisting of board of trustee members, community college presidents, senior administrators, administrators, and faculty members developed critical issues facing community colleges with respect to instructional planning and services; planning, governance, and finance; and workforce development. Thereafter, the delegation of more than 200 voted on various aspects of the most critical issue divulged in the 2008 Community College Futures Assembly: general education assessment is coming. The findings, including opportunities and challenges, potential implications for community college administrators, and future research topics are also discussed, mostly in the context of workforce development opportunities.  相似文献

Science education video game research points toward promising, but inconclusive results in both student learning outcomes and attitudes. However, student-level variables other than gender have been largely absent from this research. This study examined how students’ reading ability level and disability status are related to their video game-playing behaviors outside of school and their perceptions about the use of science video games during school. Thirty-four teachers and 876 sixth- through ninth-grade students from 14 states participated in the study. All student groups reported that they would prefer to learn science from a video game rather than from traditional text, laboratory-based, or Internet environments. Chi-square analyses indicated a significant association between reading ability level, disability status, and key areas of interest including students’ use of video games outside of school, their perceptions of their scientific abilities, and whether they would pursue a career in the sciences. Implications of these findings and areas for future research are identified.  相似文献

Since 1995, the Community College Futures Assembly has served as a national independent policy think tank for identifying critical issues facing community colleges and recognizing exemplary programs nationwide. Convening annually in January in Orlando, Florida, the assembly provides an interactive learning environment where tough questions are raised, critical issues are discussed, and policy implications are vetted. The focus for 2014 Community College Futures Assembly was the future direction of community colleges, highlighting decision makers’ views on the approaching challenges. This paper provides a brief analysis of the 2020 community college, focusing on several emerging themes including student centered learning, increasing competition, and the link between degrees and jobs.  相似文献

Three focus groups consisting of 42 board of trustee members, community college presidents, senior administrators, and faculty members developed critical issues facing community colleges with respect to instructional planning and services; planning, governance, finance; and workforce development. Thereafter, the delegation of more than 200 voted upon the overall top critical issues. “Ask customers what they want and give it to them—create for the future,” “the first rule of business is the same as the first rule of life: adapt or die;” and “hire the right people, get them on the right seat on the bus, and keep them there” were the top three critical issues overall.  相似文献

The authors conducted a study to examine experiences and preferences of middle and high school students in online learning environments. An online questionnaire was supplied to administrators of online schools, who then distributed the questionnaire to students enrolled in their schools. Topics addressed in the questionnaire included involvement in online and traditional school settings, use of special education services, participation in extracurricular activities, actual and preferred interactions with teachers and online peers, bullying, and overall opinions regarding online learning. The findings from this study are explained as well as limitations and implications for future research.  相似文献

Now, more than ever, the baby-boomer administrators are retiring in massive waves. Some researchers have predicted as high as 75% turnover by 2011 for education alone. For many years, not much attention has been placed upon succession planning or developing new leaders in some colleges; others have tended to create stockpiles of leadership candidates with not enough internal leadership positions to go around. In turn, in many schools this has left the talent pool of qualified individuals to be very small, and it creates a problem, not only for educational administrators but also, especially, for those in the entrepreneurial departments of community colleges. There has been much research about “getting the right person on the bus” and “moving from good to great,” yet no one, to the knowledge of the researchers, has extended industrial-organizational psychology research on “person-fit” into community college administration research. The purpose of this study was to examine the theoretical constructs of the educational hiring process. In turn, the application of the Lessig “Pathetic Dot” model is used to create a framework to examine hiring practices and possibly show some deficiencies. This is important, now more than ever, with community college administrations having to turn to external independent sources for validation of their practices and procedures. Finally, a brief discussion of how to strengthen the hiring process, in a time of heavy turnover and attrition, concludes the discussion. The authors also present practical applications, suggestions for future research, and implications for practitioners.  相似文献
