This study examined the effects of a 2-step practice poster session on first-year doctoral students' self-efficacy beliefs about making professional presentations, and evaluated the usefulness of an active-learning teaching assignment. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from participants after each of 2 practice poster sessions. The results (a) suggest that the relatively brief training exercise significantly increased participants' self-efficacy to give scholarly presentations, and (b) replicate earlier reports about the usefulness of the learning assignment.  相似文献

Biased test items were intentionally imbedded within a set of test items, and the resulting instrument was administered to large samples of blacks and whites. Three popular item bias detection procedures were then applied to the data: (1) the three-parameter item characteristic curve procedure, (2) the chi-square method, and (3) the transformed item difficulty approach. The three-parameter item characteristic curve procedure proved most effective at detecting the intentionally biased test items; and the chi-square method was viewed as the best alternative. The transformed item difficulty approach has certain limitations yet represents a practical alternative if sample size, lack of computer facilities, or the like preclude the use of the other two procedures.  相似文献

This paper reflects upon and connects the findings of two research projects that examined the sexual inequalities experienced by disabled young gay men. Using some of the data for illustrative purposes, we explore the consequences of the dominant heteronormative discursive practices that they experienced within sex education classes. Drawing on Foucault, we explore how the many silences within the particular version of sex education that these young men received resulted in internalized feelings of difference. Furthermore, we argue that such educational experiences construct 'certainties' that do not reflect the realities of young disabled gay men.  相似文献

The introduction of a new problem-based Graduate Medical Course with over 230 students and more than 200 staff required a systematic process for induction into the PBL philosophy and tutorial process. The 4SAT (4 Step Assessment Task) was designed for use as an instrument for formative and summative assessment of reasoning ability, elements of the PBL tutorial (group) process and individual learning outcomes. The instrument was developed through evaluative cycles based upon staff and student feedback, reflection and peer review. The 4SAT has face validity with the learning process and emphasises reasoning and integration of knowledge. An unexpected out come of its development was its use as a powerful tool to induct staff and students into the PBL group processes, scaffold development of hypothetico-deductive reasoning and provide guidance on the depth and breadth of learning expected in the course.  相似文献
