Recent research has addressed the extent to which group communication exhibits intrapersonal and interpersonal characteristics. The most defensible and reasonable view appears to be that group interaction exhibits characteristics that fall somewhere in between, with group interaction revealing evidence of both individual- and group-level processes. Latent group and multilevel approaches were utilized to examine the use of functional communication in product design teams, across a series of tasks. The findings provided additional evidence for this middle road, or convergence approach, in that group members’ roles, as well as the function of discussion contributions, significantly varied across time, and at both levels of analysis.  相似文献

Two explanations of congruency of ideal (intent) and actual (action/behavior) work of faculty are examined—reward expectations and referent others. Based on interviews with 5 college deans and 32 chairpersons, a survey of 503 faculty (69% return rate), and institutional data, it was found that referent others' goals have a greater influence than reward expectations on the congruency of work actions and intentions of faculty. Peers, chairpersons, and deans affect, in differing ways, the congruency of actions and intentions of faculty. Overwhelmingly, peers have the strongest effect, followed by chairpersons and deans. Of the three reward expectations variables (perception that work leads to tenure, promotion to associate professor, and merit salary increases), only the perception that work leads to tenure affects congruency of faculty work actions and intentions.  相似文献

Notwithstanding the wealth of research that documents the effectiveness of self‐management programs in the classroom, few investigations have explored classwide use of self‐management procedures as a universal intervention. To extend existing research in this area, we examined the effectiveness of a classwide self‐management intervention for decreasing disruptive behaviors among three at‐risk second‐grade students. We used a multiple baseline across subjects design and evaluated the effects of the self‐management program at both the individual and classwide levels during academic instruction time. Results of the study showed a decrease in disruptive behaviors of the target students and a general decrease in classroom disruptive behavior. In addition, teachers and students provided positive ratings of intervention acceptability and feasibility. Limitations, implications, and future directions for research are discussed.  相似文献

This study describes efforts to develop a self-report rating scale (Student Integration Survey: SIS) that provides diagnostic information about students with academic and/or social integration difficulties. Data obtained from administration of the SIS to incoming freshmen at a postsecondary technical institution for the deaf in the fall of 1990 and 1991 were subjected to Rasch rating scale analysis. Fit of data to the measurement model resulted in a set of 28 positive and negative statements that empirically defined the concept of institutional integration in terms of their calibration hierarchy. This type of instrument calibration has the potential of providing person measures and item scale values that are invariant over a useful range of comparisons. The early alert reporting system provides an evaluation and diagnosis of observed responses relevant to expected responses for individual respondees. The substance and methods employed may provide a model for other integration assessment efforts.This research was conducted in the course of an agreement between the Rochester Institute of Technology and the U.S. Department of Education.  相似文献

We investigate the stability and change of participation patterns in small groups by examining two longitudinal data sets at the individual and group levels of analysis. Rejecting the dichotomy between input and process models, we advance a view at the convergence of these two perspectives. We argue that stability in participation reflects input factors and that change emerges from process mechanisms. Study 1 analyzed discussion data from zero-history laboratory groups that worked on three similar tasks in succession, each with stable membership across the tasks. Results showed significant variation within participants and between groups, indicating that group members varied their participation as needed and that group-level factors influenced participation. Study 2 analyzed longitudinal data collected from the Australian Citizens' Parliament, where tasks and group membership varied over time. Study 2 replicated Study 1's findings, but analyses showed more complex patterns of both stability and change across groups and tasks. Taken together, results from the two studies support our position that both input and process mechanisms cause variation in participation. Our Conclusion examines how structural features and participation impact democratic group deliberation.  相似文献
