Even though in the early years of the Republic of Turkey Darwin’s theory of evolution was treated as a scientific theory and taught fairly in schools, despite all the substantial evidence accumulated supporting the theory of evolution since then, Darwin and his ideas today have been scorned by curriculum and education policy makers. Furthermore, Turkish students and academics have been faced with unprecedented creationist propaganda for many years. In this paper, we first provide a glimpse of the theory of evolution and creationism in Turkey, we then report the results of our survey study (N = 1,098) about the undergraduates’ acceptance and understanding of Darwinian evolution and some of the socioeconomic variables affecting those measures. Our cross sectional study shows that acceptance and understanding of the theory of evolution is quite low. We criticize the current state of evolution education in Turkey and call for a change towards a scientific treatment of the theory evolution in schools. 相似文献

The effects of sunflower oil, olive oil, margarine, soybean oil and butter on cholesterol and triglyceride levels were investigated
in the brain of rats. Rats were fed with a diet containing 15% of the oils for a period of 8 weeks. The rats were then decapitated,
brain samples were removed, homogenized and cholesterol and TG levels were measured. Brain cholesterol and Triglycerides levels
of all animals receiving different oils were significantly higher according to the contol except TG level of animals receiving
margarine. Brain cholesterol levels of the vegetable oils were statistically higher than those receiving saturated oil. Thus,
cholesterol level of the rats fed with olive oil group was significantly higher than that of the other groups but those receiving
sunflower oil group and Triglycerides level of the animals receiving olive oil was significantly higher than that of the other
groups except animal supplemented with soybean oil. Thus, it is concluded that brain lipid levels of rats are differently
effected by various oils and mechanism of which needs to be investigated. 相似文献

The purpose of this study is to assess students’ conceptual learning of electricity and magnetism and examine how these conceptions,
beliefs about physics, and quantitative problem-solving skills would change after peer instruction (PI). The Conceptual Survey
of Electricity and Magnetism (CSEM), Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey (CLASS), multiple-choice test was administered
as a pre- and posttest with Solomon 4 group design to students (N = 138) enrolled on freshman level physics course. The number of chapter taught to the students was 14. Problem-solving
strategy steps were asked to students in the exam. The analyses of CSEM showed that the treatment group (g = 0.62) obtained significantly higher conceptual learning gain than the control group (g = 0.36). The conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills of the students on magnetism considerably enhanced when
PI was conducted (37% and 20%, respectively). CLASS results for 5 subscales (conceptual understanding, applied conceptual
understanding, problem solving general, problem solving confidence, and problem solving sophistication) supported the findings
of CSEM. 相似文献
