Using data collected through case studies of 21 research universities in the United States, I reviewed the efforts institutions
are undertaking to meet the growing demand for interdisciplinary knowledge. I adopted the framework of transformative change,
where change occurs over time and brings important shifts in the way an institution views itself. Findings indicated that
implementing interdisciplinary initiatives is accomplished not only through changes in how institutional work is organized
and the facilities in which the work is carried out, but also through concurrent shifts in the institutional culture related

Preferences for pink and blue were tested in children aged 4–11 years in three small-scale societies: Shipibo villages in the Peruvian Amazon, kastom villages in the highlands of Tanna Island, Vanuatu, and BaYaka foragers in the northern Republic of Congo; and compared to children from an Australian global city (total N = 232). No sex differences were found in preference for pink in any of the three societies not influenced by global culture (ds − 0.31–0.23), in contrast to a female preference for pink in the global city (d = 1.24). Results suggest that the pairing of female and pink is a cultural phenomenon and is not driven by an essential preference for pink in girls. 相似文献

Threshold concepts have been widely utilized to understand learning in academic disciplines and student experiences in a disciplinary curriculum. This study considered how threshold concepts might operate within an interdisciplinary setting. Data were collected through interviews with 40 doctoral students enrolled in an interdisciplinary program as well as content analysis of interdisciplinary curricula. The findings emphasize the importance of the integrative process to interdisciplinary initiatives. Interdisciplinary threshold concepts do not result from the addition of multiple disciplines, but rather are fostered through unique facets of the interdisciplinary experience. 相似文献

Higher education institutions have faced increased social, cultural, economic, and political challenges in recent decades. In this study we used the socio-cultural construct of trust to understand how organizational responses to external challenges impact the relationship between faculty members and administrators. Using extensive interviews, observations, and document analysis from a small, private college, we considered how intentionality, a safe campus climate, expertise, participatory governance, and transparency impact stakeholders’ perceptions of organizational trust. 相似文献

This study examined future-oriented behavior in children (3–6 years; N = 193) from three diverse societies—one industrialized Western city and two small, geographically isolated communities. Children had the opportunity to prepare for two alternative versions of an immediate future event over six trials. Some 3-year-olds from all cultures demonstrated competence, and a majority of the oldest children from each culture prepared for both future possibilities on every trial. Although there were some cultural differences in the youngest age groups that approached ceiling performance, the overall results indicate that children across these communities become able to prepare for alternative futures during early childhood. This acquisition period is therefore not contingent on Western upbringing, and may instead indicate normal cognitive maturation. 相似文献

Using data collected from a qualitative case study of an online baccalaureate nursing program, we examined the influence of
online degree programs on undergraduate student socialization and learning. We considered how components of socialization—knowledge
acquisition, investment, and involvement—are influenced by the online context. The findings suggest the importance of considering
non-academic influences in regards to nontraditional student experiences. The theoretical intersection of online learning
and undergraduate student development offers new and significant areas of research, specifically related to the pedagogical
role of faculty and the impact of social engagement. Implications for future research and practice are offered.

The relationship between doctoral students and faculty members has been identified as a key component of a successful graduate
school experience. In this article, we consider the challenges inherent in designing and implementing a formal doctoral student
mentoring program. By bringing together students, peer mentors, and faculty mentors, the program sought to introduce a team-based
platform to facilitate student success. We specifically consider how program components might be scaled up across the institution,
providing both a personal and supportive relationship for participants as well as an information resource for the broader

In cities across the United States higher education institutions exist in tandem with a range of other socio-cultural and economic organizations, such as businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies. The role of colleges and universities in city development is important, and empirical examination of universities’ role in and relationship with cities provides an avenue for higher education researchers to explore interactions that are potentially key to a thriving knowledge economy. The Knowledge of Memory Aging Questionnaire (KMAQ) measures laypersons' knowledge of normal memory changes and pathological memory deficits in adulthood. In Experiment 1, undergraduate and graduate social work students and social work practitioners completed the KMAQ. Social workers and graduate students were more accurate on the pathological than normal memory aging items, but undergraduate students' knowledge did not differ by question type. Experiment 2 was a conceptual replication where the same pattern of outcomes was obtained using a more heterogeneous sample to increase the ecological validity of the findings. Results confirmed that nonmedical and medical staff at an assisted living facility and health care professionals were more accurate on the pathological than normal memory aging items. Community college and university students' accuracy was similar across question type. Implications for research and the design of education programs to increase awareness of normal and pathological memory deficits in late life are considered. 相似文献
