Reading self-concept is an important predictor of reading comprehension and vice versa. However, the mechanisms that are at work in this relation have yet to be identified. In line with the self-enhancement approach, we propose that in the reading domain, amount of reading, book choice (text difficulty and book length), and intrinsic reading motivation should function as mediating variables in the relation between reading self-concept and reading comprehension. We tested this hypothesis with longitudinal data gathered from N = 405 German students in Grades 7, 8, and 9. The results showed that reading self-concept had a positive effect on reading comprehension, intrinsic motivation, book length, and amount of reading. However, indirect paths between reading self-concept and reading comprehension were found only for intrinsic motivation, not for amount of reading or book choice. The results are discussed in the context of students’ reading comprehension development, and consequences for research and education are derived.

Information-processing theory and research suggest that a careful examination of the input levels of processing is an essential prerequisite to the accurate assessment of higher levels of cognition. This paper describes a preassessment screening procedure to evaluate sensory-motor and perceptual encoding processes of children referred for psychoeducational assessment. In addition, an investigation of the diagnostic utility of the screening procedure is presented. Assessment procedures and outcomes for 18 children screened for encoding deficits were compared with those of a comparison group of 23 children whose psychoeducational evaluation at the same clinic did not include the screening procedure. Results demonstrate the potential usefulness of preassessment screening for encoding deficits to inform and supplement traditional psychometric measures of intellectual functioning.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to describe and compare the visual encoding processes and copying performance of normal children and children with perceptual and neurological disabilities viewing the Bender-Gestalt designs. The eye movements of these children were recorded as they examined the nine designs of the Bender-Gestalt test. In addition, protocols of the test were obtained in the standard way. Clear qualitative and quantitative differences in the scanning strategies were found among each of the three diagnostic groups. No differences were found in the reporductions of the designs for normals and perceptually impaired children. However, the designs of the neurologically impaired children were significantly different from those of either of the other two diagnostic groups. The results are discussed with respect to the use of eye movement data as a technique to examine visual perceptual deficiencies indepently of motoric functions. Encoding processes charactersitic of the three groups are inferred from their scanning strategies and the relationship between these encoding processes and psychosenory learning disabilities is discussed.  相似文献

There is general agreement that spatial data adds particular difficulties to digital preservation due to, for example, the complexity of data models and semantics specific to individual thematic areas. However, there is a lack of literature providing an overview of the challenges and analyzing in particular the effort required to surmount these in combination with the potential added value gained through digital preservation.

The Delphi method was used to evaluate obstacles to archiving geographic vector and raster data serving as a basis for topographic base map creation, seen through the lens of data producers, providers and guardians. Two international Delphi groups were questioned on developments regarding geodata, and their influences on access and preservation.

The mentioned handicaps to preservation were of financial, managerial, legal, and technological in nature. The latter have a higher probability to be surmounted within at least 10 years than non-technological. The study shows that the lack of standardization and the use of proprietary formats is still a central problem. Furthermore, the consciousness about the value of geographic assets is considered most likely to rise early. As a good starting point for improving archiving of spatial data, we also suggest the controlled disposal of superfluous data as a measure to reduce cost.  相似文献
