This study examined the level of instructional use of Internet among science teachers involved with an in-service professional development project. An instrument on Level of Use of innovation was modified for the study. A criterion sample of teachers to be interviewed via telephone was randomly selected from a pool of 347 K–12 teachers. Somers' d and contingency coefficients were determined to see whether any relationship exists between a teacher's Level of Use and the following categories: (a) amount of experience with the Internet; (b) availability of resources support and access to the Internet in classroom and at home; (c) number of teacher and student users at school, (d) gender; and (e) type of school. Results of step-wise multiple regression indicate that classroom access, instructional experience of using Internet with students, availability of resource support and number of teacher users at school are the best predictors of teacher's Level of Use. Chi square test for comparisons between groups of completers and noncompleters of On-Line West Virginia K–12 RuralNet courses also revealed that a lack of classroom access to Internet and lack of resource/technical support at school contributed significantly to lower level of use among noncompleters.  相似文献

School-age children are frequently exposed to issues related to global warming/global climatic change. Yet, their conceptions regarding the scope and nature of this phenomenon are often incomplete or even inconstant with predominant scientific understandings. The complex conceptual knowledge required to understand issues related to global warming create learning situations that harbor the development of incomplete or inaccurate ideas related to global warming. This study presents some of those misconceptions and discusses strategies for mitigation.  相似文献

Teachers are often subject to considerable pressure to utilize the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) in their classrooms. Research suggests, however, that many teachers may not be prepared to make meaningful educational use of the resources available on the Web. This study examines the initial perceptions of educational value of science resource materials available on the WWW, as gathered from a group of science teachers participating in the West Virginia K-12 RuralNet project summer workshop training. The results suggest that while most teachers feel that the WWW does provide a large number of good science resources for educators, few teachers are prepared to make use of these materials in their own classrooms. Possible solutions to this problem include long term training in both technical and curriculum integration, classroom practice during training, and the support of an on-line community of peers.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of employing an STS instructional model that addresses each of the four goal levels of STS education versus an instructional model containing only life science content, on seventh grade students' participation in citizenship action on STS issues. A modified version of the non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental research design was used with seventeen intact seventh grade life science classes, ten of which received STS instruction (N = 264) and seven of which received life science instruction (N = 136) over 20 school days. The STS instruction sequentially addressed each of the four goal levels for STS education. Data were collected using the Actions Taken on Public Issues instrument to measure citizenship behaviors. ANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA were employed to analyze data. It was concluded from the findings that employment of an STS issue investigation with an action instructional model that addressed the four goal levels of STS education significantly increased seventh grade students' participation in citizenship actions on STS issues. Implications and recommendations are provided.  相似文献

This paper presents teachers' perspectives on the impact of Internet usage on their teaching practices. Semi-structured interviews with ten teachers and two identical on-line surveys were used to collect data from teacher participants in the West Virginia K-12 RuralNet Project. Questions were directed toward teachers' understandings of Internet resources, the development of collaborative relationships and the use of investigative projects in classrooms. Teacher enthusiasm for benefits of the information highway is mingled with frustrations with the nature of the Internet medium and constraints within schools.  相似文献
