Computer terminal memory performance in a resource sharing distributed supercomputing environment is analysed with Erlang arrivals, synchronous transmission and single server random interruptions through a Bernoulli sequence of independent random variables. A new method to derive a closed expression for data arrivals with Erlangly distributed interarrival times is presented. A simple and easy approach to derive the steady state probability expressions of the terminal memory content process is presented. The memory performance is studied in terms of overflow probability and average queueing delay. The results portrayed on graphs will provide an insight about system response time and performance to the system designers.  相似文献

We study the role of the relationship among inventors and intermediaries in the licensing of university inventions. We suggest that a prior inventor-intermediaries relationship positively influences licensing rates through selective retention of higher quality relationships and mutual learning in the relationship, enabling intermediaries to reduce both information asymmetry and search costs between inventors and potential licensees. We argue that the influence of a prior inventor-intermediaries relationship on licensing is especially important before intellectual property protection is attained and can be substituted by the buyer-side contacts of inventors and intermediaries. We test these predictions using 919 inventions from the technology transfer office at Stanford University. This study has implications for the policies and design of university technology licensing organizations.  相似文献

An intelligent display terminal system at a finite user resource sharing node in distributed computer systems is modelled as a queueing model with finite microcomputer memory, burst Erlang arrivals from the display terminal cathode-ray-tube, constant service-time, synchronous transmission and single server interrupted through a first-order Markov process. A new generalized method differs from the usual stage and summing method used by the previous research-workers is presented to calculate burst Erlang arrival probabilities. The display terminal microcomputer memory performance is studied for finite and infinite cases and the expressions for overflow probabilities and average queueing delays are derived using the recursive method developed for calculating steady state probabilities of the microcomputer memory states. An integrated voice-data system is presented as a probable application of the model at remote areas and some of its computed values are portrayed on graphs to be useful in calculating response times of remote display terminals sharing voice channels for transmission purpose.  相似文献

Successfully developed academic inventions have the potential to spawn new technological domains, form the basis of thriving business ventures, and improve the well-being of society. However, evaluating whether an early-stage scientific invention truly has such potential is extremely difficult, and financially backing such inventions is highly risky. And yet, organizations and their evaluators still back some of these inventions with resources for further development. We investigate this puzzle to pinpoint how and why evaluators decide to offer resource commitments at early stages, despite the red flags raised using standard evaluation criteria. Many academic inventions need these initial resources to dispel concerns regarding their commercial feasibility, so evaluators need to take a leap of faith with their support to prematurely avoid eliminating high-potential opportunities. We tested our theory using text analysis on nearly 700 invention evaluation reports written by a university’s technology transfer experts. Our results revealed that evaluators backed inventions based on their feasibility (overcoming doubt and assessing maturity) and desirability (background familiarity and scientific complexity). Using the context of the research laboratory, our study insights can be applied to many management situations in which early-stage opportunities are assessed for resource commitments under high uncertainty.  相似文献
