The effect of 40 days yoga training in 30 hospitalized non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients has been investigated after stopping the medication. Blood glucose response to oral glucose load measured as area index total (AIT), glycated haemoglobin (GHb) plasma lipids and lipoproteins measurements before and after yoga training have been compared. Yoga training resulted in a significant improvement in AIT, GHb and plasma triglycerides and cholesterol levels. The data suggest that yoga training along with diet and medical management provides an important metabolic control in NIDDM and may have a role in primary prevention of diabetes mellitus. 相似文献

Emil Fischer is considered to be the founding father of the field of peptide chemistry and originator of the term peptide. In the beginning of the 20th century, Fischer had a clear vision to foresee the day when a protein would be synthesized. Subsequent to this brilliant beginning, progress however was slow for the next 50 years. In 1953, the chemical synthesis of oxytocin by duVigneaud was a landmark achievement. The subsequent decades witnessed the discovery of a vast number of biologically active peptides. The last two decades of the 20th century was filled with hopes of multiple simultaneous synthesis, peptide libraries and peptide vaccines. The present study aims at determining the applicability of Lotka's law, negative binomial distribution and lognormal distribution for institutional productivity, in the same way as it is to authors and their productivity in the field of engineering sciences and the patents filed by industrial firms in laser S&T. The study indicates that non of the three distributions are applicable for institutional productivity in engineering sciences. However, Lotka's law holds good for full as well as truncated set of data for the patents filed by industrial firms. 相似文献

Functional ovarian hyperandrogenism (FOH) is a form of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) characterized by elevated circulating levels of androgens derived from the ovary. Insulin resistance (IR) is the most common etiological factor in women with FOH. IR causes the generation of increased oxidative stress (OS) and diminished antioxidant status. OS is directly correlated with both IR and testosterone levels, which consequently contribute to endocrine and biochemical alterations in FOH women. In the current study, elevations in total testosterone, free testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels accompanied by a decrease in follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) level leading to higher LH:FSH ratio were the prominent endocrine changes observed in women with FOH. A significant increase in fasting blood levels of glucose and insulin, as well as an elevated IR were also seen in FOH women, as compared to their age matched controls. Women with FOH have higher pro-oxidant and lower anti-oxidant levels in blood than their age matched controls. In FOH women, elevations in LH:FSH ratio and OS are correlated more with hyperandrogenemia than with IR. Of the androgens, free rather than total testosterone has better positive correlations with elevated LH:FSH ratio and OS, and hence, the former is a better predictive marker for the development of biochemical PCOS in women with FOH. 相似文献

Patients with type II Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) are more prone to Ischaemic Heart Disease (IHD). Although, oxygen free radicals
are known to contribute to the development of IHD, conflicting reports are available regarding the antioxidant status in patients
of NIDDM complicated with IHD. This study was undertaken to investigate the oxidative status in patients of NIDDM and to assess
their correlation with plasma glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin and duration of diabetes. The levels of malondialdehyde were
significantly increased where as levels of superoxide dismutase, Glutathione peroxidase and vitamin C were significantly decreased
in diabetics without complications and non-diabetics with IHD when compared with the controls. The levels of malondialdehyde
and Glutathione peroxidase were significantly increased where as levels of superoxide dismutase and vitamin C were significantly
decreased in diabetics with IHD when compared with diabetics without complications and non-diabetics with IHD. The implications

The present study has investigated the levels of lipids, lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL and LDL cholesterol), thiobarbituric
acid reactive substances (TBARS) and vitamin E in plasma and erythrocyte membranes of twenty two clinically diagnosed adult
rheumatoid arthritis patients and an equal number of age matched healthy subjects. The levels of lipids and lipoprotein cholesterol
were markedly reduced in patients with rheumatoid arthritis as compared to healthy subjects. The altered lipid pattern may
be related to decreased lipoprotein cholesterol, fatty acids and impairment in antioxidant defence mechanism. 相似文献
